Charles Soludo Inaugurates 80-man Transition Committee

Anambra State governor-elect, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has inaugurated the 80-man transition committee assembled by him for the transition of the current state government to his, as his swearing-in on March 17 draws close.

The former Central Bank governor said he is very optimistic that he will hit the ground running, while stating that he would stop at nothing to ensure that Anambra people who overwhelming voted him were not disappointed.

He also stated that part of the task of the transition committee would be to draw a pool of resource persons from where the government would pick capable hands to help it drive its policies.

Speaking during the inauguration, Soludo said: “I was called His Excellency a while ago, but may I plead that that Excellency tag should please wait for now.

“That is part of what we will discuss in this committee. You may just need to learn how to call me by my name, but if that isn’t good for you, then, may I request that you simply call me ‘Charlie Nwangbafor’ (Charles, son of Mgbafor). If that one is so difficult for you that you must be formal in addressing me, then you can address me as Mr Governor.”
The Anambra governor-elect, while inaugurating the committee, said: “This is an assemblage of the people I describe as wise men and women who have kindly accepted to pay to serve our homeland, under the leadership of one of Anambra’s finest gift to the world, our own dear Oby Ezekwesili. This committee comprises some of Nigeria’s best, and Anambra is deeply grateful that you are sacrificing your time and talent pro bono, to help our journey to a liveable and prosperous smart city.

“This is a friendly transition, it is an APGA government to APGA government, and we expect nothing except the level of cooperation expected among members of a family. And that we are having this at this transition committee jointly, being inaugurated, speaks eloquently. It is almost like a combined transition committee and it is a testimony that this is a family affair.

“Some commentators have observed that the number of the transition committee is large in their estimation, even without seeing the terms of reference, or the task, or that the members are offering their time and talent without remuneration as it were.

“Some were already computing the amount of money that each of you would be paid. If Anambra accepts to pay or remunerate the calibre of people here, I’m sure even a World Bank facility would not help us. Despite those observations, I must advise that you should feel absolutely free to bring anyone else that you feel can bring great value to this work.”

Speaking on security, Soludo said he has great plans for security, adding that it was intentional that he left out security experts in his committee, as security is a great challenge in Nigeria today, and would not be discussed in the open.

“We deliberately left out some experts in security from the transition committee. We prefer to deal with this subject matter separately. I’m not sure that would fit into this kind of place. What we will say in public is not what we will say in private, because things are no longer the same any longer in security.”

On the terms of reference, Soludo said: “The global objective of the transition committee is to help the government and the governor-elect to achieve a seamless transition and we are ready to hit the ground running from day one. The task would be elaborated, but three stand out.

“First is to ascertain, certify the state of affairs, the short to medium term deliverables of the vision 2070. To propose actionable agenda for the next administration, three to assist with talent hunt to populate the Anambra change data bank.

“To achieve this, we will soon advertise for expression of interest, whereby we call on all problem solvers with integrity, competence and passion to indicate which problem or problems they can solve for Ndi Anambra, whether in full time, part time or pro bono services. Together with the talent hunt from the committee, we will then have a robust pool to ensure we continuously fit round pegs in round holes.

“We are open to seek help and we will deeply appreciate advice and assistance of everybody to enable us deliver efficient and effective services to millions of our people.

“While we will continue to be sensitive to politics, in a democracy, that is expected, we also know that the teeming millions just want public service to work and do not care who delivers them.

“There are several members of this committees who I have never met, but your worth and reputation found you. We are deeply grateful to all of you who have accepted to actually pay to serve. Some are even in opposition parties, but let me say that sound ideas and implementation have no political party badge or state of origin.

“We envision an Anambra that will be the preferred destination in West Africa to live, learn, work, relax and enjoy, and we will welcome any and every contribution to make this work. Of course, Anambra is a state in the South-east, and is not an island unto itself, so we will seek the cooperation and collaboration of other states, especially South-east and South-south states, this will be critical for creating this prosperous homeland.

“The times are hard and the immediate future will be challenging. Despite this, Ndi Anambra expect extraordinary outcomes, and literarily expect miracles, and we can’t let them down and no excuses will do.

“We are determined to give it our all, mobilizing the creative resources of our people all over the world to create a befitting homeland. It is our collective dreams and assignment. Given the pool of human resources in this transition committee, Anambra people will expect an exemplary report, very illuminating one. I’m looking forward to using the report of this committee as a template to operate from day one.”

  • Why I Picked Ezekwesili As Head Of Transition Committee – Soludo

Why I Picked Ezekwesili As Head Of Transition Committee – Soludo

Prof. Charles Soludo, governor -elect of Anambra State, has given the reason why he chose Dr. Oby Ezekwesili as chairman of his transition committee.

Soludo’s media convener, and former lawmaker at the Anambra House of Assembly, Hon. Pauly Onyeka, said Soludo made Ezekwesili the chairman of his governorship transition committee because of her bravery and integrity.

Onyeka said Ezekwesili’s bravery and ability to call a spade a spade will help her to put on the table any issue that may arise from the outgoing government and the incoming government.

“Oby Ezekwesili is somebody that every body knows is very hard working, even if she associates with any political party, she still remains non partisan in character.”

“I think her appointment or the choice of her is a very wonderful one. She is someone who is knowledgeable about issues of government and governance in Nigeria. She knows how to go about the job, and she is someone that will call a spade a spade. She is brave, so I think her appointment is very good.

“Even though we are transiting from one government to the other, and even though it is from same political party, if there are issues that need to be ironed out, and in ironing out those issues, she and her committee, if they find out what will help Anambra move forward, I believe she has the courage to put it on the table and have it ironed out, without minding if anyone would be offended or not,” he said.

INEC Presents Certificate Of Return To Soludo, Deputy

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Charles Soludo, has received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following his victory in the just-concluded guber election in Anambra State.

Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), received the Certificate of Return in a ceremony on Friday in Awka.

The Deputy Governor-elect, Onyeka Ibezim, also got his Certificate of Return.

Friday’s event followed an election that saw Soludo sweep to victory in an emphatic style. The Isuofia-born banker won 19 of the 21 local government areas of the state to clinch the position.

The 61-year-old polled 112,229 votes, twice higher than his closest rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Valentine Ozigbo who had 53,807 votes.

“That Charles Chukwuma Soludo of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the returning officer for the election, Professor Florence Obi, said while pronouncing him as the winner.

A flurry of congratulatory messages – including those from his opponents –  have continued to pour in since his electoral victory.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who was among the first to congratulate Soludo on his feat, described the election as a reflection of the people’s will and said he looks forward to working with him.

“President Buhari enjoins Prof. Soludo, member of the Presidential Economic Advisory Committee, to rally other stakeholders to tackle the enormous challenges confronting the State and the Southeast in general,” presidential aide, Femi Adesina, said in a statement.

“The President looks forward to working with the incoming governor for the peace, security, and development of not only Anambra State but the entire country. ”

Soludo had, in the wake of his win, thanked the people of Anambra State for giving him the mandate.

He equally extended the olive branch to other contestants, asking them to keep the “spirit of Anambra alive and strong” and “take our homeland to the moon”.

PDP’s Candidate Valentine Ozigbo, Congratulates Soludo

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just concluded governorship election in Anambra State, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, has congratulated former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, on his victory.

Ozigbo, in a press statement signed by him, said he has just called and congratulated Soludo over his victory at the polls.

The statement read: “I have just called Professor Chukwuma Soludo and congratulated him on being declared the winner of the Anambra State governorship election 2021. I wished him well and prayed for his success.

“Let me also use this opportunity to congratulate all the men and women who contested our dear state’s governorship this year. You all have shown a determination to see that Anambra is better. It was an honour to run this race with you.”

He said that he decided to go into partisan politics two years ago, and that in doing so, he had a number of objectives in mind, including to use Anambra to set an example of excellence in governance, to unify Anambra and Igbo land around a shared vision of greatness, and to inspire more professionals to go into politics.

“Pulled by the vision of a better and brighter Anambra, we set out on the quest for governorship, resolute on taking revolutionary steps to address the decay and decline in security, infrastructure, education, healthcare, the environment, and all other social systems meant to serve the people.

“As laid out in our Ka Anambra Chawapu Manifesto, we planned to transform Anambra into the most competitive sub-national economy in Nigeria by opening up public, social, and commercial spaces leveraging on the strength of our youth and women. Ultimately, to make Anambra the pride of Nigeria.

“Given where we started and where we are today, we consider ourselves winners. Our Ka Anambra Chawapu message has permeated the consciousness of Ndi Anambra, and the nation at large. It is the strongest message that has come out of Anambra 2021, and it continues to beat in the hearts of Ndi Igbo,” he said.

Ozigbo said within the period of the election, he met people who wondered how he could perform so well in his first attempt, adding that he documented his grand vision for a brighter and better Anambra and presented it to the people with the energy to implement it.

“Though we may not have the opportunity in the immediate to get it started, we will be holding the government in power accountable to ensure that the welfare of the people is foremost in their actions at all times,” Ozigbo said.

He added that the election was fraught with lots of shortcomings on the part of various government institutions, including security, electoral commission, vote buying and many others.

“The security agencies failed to provide a peaceful environment for campaigns to hold. On election day, they were absent from many polling centres leading to elections not holding or held in situations that allowed for chaos and fraud.

“The national electoral commission presented untrained and poorly trained staff who could not operate the voting machines in many places. They failed woefully in providing logistical support for their staff and so elections started very late in many places and did not hold in many others.

“The use of government funds and resources to corrupt, coerce and intimidate voters, PDP party agents, and electoral officials was a major factor in determining the outcome of this election.

“All of these led to the disenfranchisement of the greater percentage of voters and staining the course of democracy. I will be dedicating time to champion the positive change we need to ensure that future elections are truly free and fair and that the will of the electorate prevails.

“Denominational politics was also a factor. We need to do a lot more to ensure that competence is never sacrificed on this altar, and that democracy is practised in line with its truest tenets.

“In all, I am more determined to working for a better future for our children by remaining in active politics and rebuilding our party to be more united and more robust for those who come after us,” he said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed Professor Charles Soludo as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Anambra election slated to hold on November 6, 2021.

The five-man panel led by Justice Mary Odili also affirmed Mr. Victor Oye as the  chairman of the party.

The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of justices led by Justice Mary Odili, upheld the judgement of the Kano State Division of the Court of Appeal, which validated the primary election that produced Soludo.

According to the Supreme Court, the appellate court was right when it quashed a Jigawa State High Court judgement that recognised a parallel primary election that was conducted by the Jude Okeke-led faction of APGA.

It will be recalled that Soludo emerged from the primary election that was organised by the Chief Victor Oye-led faction of the party.

  • WAEC certificate holders can’t govern Anambra, says Soludo

WAEC certificate holders can’t govern Anambra, says Soludo

The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof Chukwuma Soludo has chided his fellow governorship candidates for declaring only WAEC Certificate as their highest educational attainments.

Soludo who spoke at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka during the inauguration of the APGA National Campaign Council said Anambra had outgrown being governed with such lowly educational qualification.

INEC had on Thursday released a list of candidates for the Anambra Governorship election, with most candidates who claim strings of degrees submitting only WAEC certificates.

The candidate who was on Thursday enlisted as the standard-bearer of APGA by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), after series of legal battles said the November 6 governorship election in the state is APGA’s.

“APGA has a star-studded team for this election, and it is the party with the best brains.

“Look at other political parties and their candidates, and you will find out that they have just First School Leaving Certificate and others WAEC as their highest qualification.

“Is it First School Leaving Certificate and WAEC that they will use to govern Anambra? Anambra has outgrown such kind of state and you can not use those certificates to govern Anambra. Look at my running mate, Dr Onyekachi Ibezim, a medical doctor. You can’t beat our team.”

Soludo thanked God for the Appeal Court’s judgment that gave him victory. He reiterated that with the judgment, there was no longer anything like a faction in APGA.

He added that: “APGA will contest for every vote, in every ward, in every church, in every local government, and we are confident of victory.”

National Chairman of the party, Dr Victor Oye who also spoke at the event said APGA was indestructible, and that anyone who plans to destroy the party will himself be destroyed.

“APGA has grown above destruction. We are warning those who are working towards destroying the party to desist from doing so, or they will be destroyed.

“Anambra people have spoken, and they want Soludo. Let those vying for governor against Soludo bring their certificate let’s see. We have a candidate that has first-class in every level of his education. He is a renowned professor of Economics and a former CBN governor.

“Let that candidate who is assembling governors from everywhere to come to Anambra, come and show us his certificate first. He has none. We will remain steadfast and continue to pray and we hope that the victory trumpet will sound on November 6. Soludo has won the election already and we are confident of it.

Governor Willie Obiano, the leader of the party and also chairman of the APGA national campaign council inaugurated the team. “By the power conferred on me as the leader of the party, I hereby inaugurate this campaign council.”

Anambra Guber: INEC releases list of candidates, Omits Ozigbo, Soludo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has omitted former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Charles Soludo, as well as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the candidates’ list for the Anambra Governorship poll.

Nigeria’s electoral body released the list of candidates for the November 6 poll on Friday. It instead listed a member of the House of Representatives from another faction of the All Progressives Congress (APGA), Chukwuma Umeoji as the flagbearer for Soludo’s party.

“The Commission also considered and took cognizance of the Judgments/Court Orders served on it in relation to the primaries of the political parties and other processes leading to the election,” INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, explained in a statement.

“In line with section 31(3) of the Electoral Act, 2010(as amended) the personal particulars of the candidates will be published in the Commissions Notice Board in Awka, Anambra State while the names of the candidates, their gender, party, age, qualification and the Commissions decision/ remarks are herein attached.”
