Withdraw Petition, Negotiate With Tinubu Over Interest Of South-East

Former Governor of Enugu state, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani has asked the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Mr. Peter Obi to withdraw his petition against the President-Elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that it is ‘dead on arrival’

Nnamani made the remarks in a statement issued to reporters on Sunday, April 23.

He said Obi does not have the spread or national appeal as his appeal to non-electoral matters is to demarket the President-elect and besmirch his reputation. He added that what Obi is doing with the petition is “ego-driven, a joke carried too far.”

“His Petition is dead on arrival. He does not have the spread or national appeal. His appeal to non-electoral matters is to demarket the President-elect and besmirch his reputation.

“He does not have near spread and national appeal. His petition is ego-driven, a joke carried too far. His attempt to highlight on non electoral issues is trying to embarrass President-elect.

“Obi needs to come down from his high horse to allow sedate minds to negotiate on behalf of the Igbo and South East for safe landing to include our stake in the national Palavar and Share of the accruals of the commonwealth”

“We must join the mainstream and participate in the making of a new Nigeria. We are not going anywhere. We de kampe and ready to bargain for our own share. It is a common knowledge that others are doing the same.

“Igbo has to confront reality now or be consigned to the backwoods of history. Time to align is now.”

I’m opposite of what you’re trying to portray – Peter Obi replies Chimaroke Nnamani

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has responded to allegations of ethno-religious bigotry levelled against him by former Governor of Enugu state, Chimaroke Nnamani, who went off on a rant after losing a senatorial election to a Labour party candidate.

Asides from accusing Obi of whipping up ethnic and religious sentiments in his quest to win the 2023 presidency, Chimaroke also claimed that the Labour Party presidential candidate exploited the nation’s fault lines to advance his personal cause.

Responding to Chimaroke’s claim, Obi stated that he must be mistaking him with someone else. Obi, who advised Chimaroke to desist from such “senseless and unsubstantiated allegations just to dent one’s image”, said he told Nigerians not to vote for him based on any ethnic or religious link, but to be considered based on Character, Character, Capacity, and Compassion.

“Throughout these electioneering campaigns, you have consistently cast aspersions on my person, despite my always being respectful to you as an elder brother, and never publicly or privately commenting negatively about you.

“I am really surprised that you as my dear elder brother would go out of the way in the exercise of his fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in our law to go into saying what he knows is not true.

“I find it very shocking that you had to label me as an ethnic and religious bigot and as one who indulges in a campaign of hatred. In this instance, I like to state unequivocally that I am the direct opposite of what you said in your statement and what my campaigns have been.

“I want to believe that my dear elder brother must have mistaken me for someone else because, in this campaign, I have consistently championed issues-based campaigns, and maintained so, even using illustrations and data to buttress my position, to the extent that I have been accused of using data wrongly and media houses had to create fact check desks just to monitor and address issues I raised during campaigns.

“I have been on record to have insisted severally throughout the country that I should not be voted for based on any ethnic or religious link, but to be considered based on Character, Character, Capacity, and Compassion. I have always respectfully requested that my track records & integrity be verified.

“I will also like to challenge anybody including, my dear elder brother, to show anywhere in my public appearance where I in any way portrayed ethnic or religious bigotry or where I called names, even when I came to campaign in Enugu State.

“I was also taken aback at your attributing the “Lagos is no man’s land” statement to Igbo because there is no evidence of that which I see as a case of giving a dog a bad name just to hang it.

“Maybe my brother would like to know that I got more votes from non-Igbo in Lagos, Abuja, & other parts of Nigeria, and even if Igbo voted for me should it be the reason why they should be chased away from where they are living and making tangible contributions to development?. Britain will not send Indians packing because they voted for an Indian to become the Prime Minister.

“I also noticed the spirited efforts you put up to tag me a tribal bigot but such would be hard to prove empirically and I would like to advise my dear elder brother not to join in such senseless and unsubstantiated allegations just to dent one’s image.

“As I very much know that among the critical characteristics of every good leader are listening, and learning and my brother advised that I should return to school to learn some aspects of leadership I am lacking.

“Why should I go to school to pay huge fees when I can get it free of charge from my dear elder brother who knows it better? I respectfully appeal that I be invited by my Senior brother to teach me accordingly.

“My warmest regards to the family and God bless.”

‘I didn’t get fair hearing’ — Nnamani React To His PDP Suspension

Chimaroke Nnamani, senator representing Enugu west senatorial district, has kicked against his suspension by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On Friday, the PDP national working committee (NWC) suspended Nnamani and eight others over alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement issued early Saturday morning, the former governor of Enugu said his suspension came to him as a “rude shock and huge surprise”.

The legislator said he was not informed of any petition filed against him.

Nnamani said he was not invited by the PDP NWC to respond to such a query, adding that his suspension was a violation of the party’s regulations and the provisions of the 1999 constitution.

“Earlier tonight, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announced the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of PDP, suspending me from the party,” the tweet reads.

“I have since been inundated with telephone calls and messages from various persons, seeking my clarification on the matter. Just like every other person, the decision and announcement of my purported suspension from the PDP came to me as a rude shock and a huge surprise.

“I was never at any time notified of any petition or complaint against me or informed of the grounds that formed the decision of the NWC of the PDP to suspend me from the party.

“I was not also invited to any meeting, proceeding, or hearing of the NWC of the party where my supposed offense (s) was/were discussed. I was, therefore, not afforded the opportunity to make representations on my behalf at any meeting where the proposal and decision to suspend me from the party was made. My right to a fair hearing was consequently violated against the clear provisions of the Constitution of the party, especially in disciplinary proceedings. More importantly the Superior Constitution of the FRN.”

The lawmaker asked his supporters to “remain calm and law-abiding while we continue our campaign to a hopefully victorious conclusion”.

Insecurity: State Police Is Not The Solution – Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani

As leaders and experts continue to propose how Nigeria can overcome the problem of insecurity, a former governor of Enugu State believes state police is not an option.

Senator Chimaroke Nnamani was of the opinion that adopting state police as a solution to the security challenges would be a wrong move because the factors that led to the abolition of regional police were still very much available.

“That is not the solution. State police will not work in Nigeria,” he said when he featured as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He added, “Remember that we had some form of state police – regional police, we had an ordinance of 1916 that formerly established regional police. There were factors that led to the abolition of state police.

“All those factors that led to the abolition of the regional police and formal entry into the central police have not changed. Nigeria is organic, it is one unit and what that means is that if the eye is having a problem, the brain could have a problem.”

The former governor, however, stated that having state police would only function effectively if it was made to be uniform in all 36 states of the federation.

He warned that should state police not be in uniform and standardised in all the state, it would amount to what he described as an inherent inequality.

According to the lawmaker, it is an imbalance to have state police in a state like Lagos where the poverty rate is very low compared to other states with a higher rate of poverty.

On the way forward, he suggested a conference of ethnic nationalities to help address the imbalance said to have been created by the constitution.

“Nigeria is a country of multi-ethnic African nationalities – those ethnic nationalities are in Nigeria on basis of inequality.

“The constitutions that have been derived from all these fora are inefficient, unequal, and unjust because those constitutions are results of political machinations of people who got the people to make the constitutions together,” said Nnamani.

He added, “What we need is a conference of ethnic nationalities on equal basis. Multi-ethnic nationalities have to conference and produce a system that is equitable, fair, and just.

“The system, as it is – the National Assembly, State assemblies…, are inherently unjust because of the way they were derived.”
