Contractors shut down NDDC HQ over debts

    By Isaac Kertyo

Indigenous Contractors have shut down the headquarters of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in Rivers State over the failure of the commission to pay their debts.

The contractors under the umbrella of NDDC Indigenous Contractors Association had in the past six days taken over the premises of the commission in protest, frustrating all activities of the office.

The contractors, who are of Niger Delta origin with placard bearing different inscriptions such as “NDDC pay us our money’, ‘NDDC, Akwa pay contractors please’, ‘NDDC contractors are dying,’ noted that all attempts to get their pay had proven abortive.

Speaking, president of the association, Andrew Ijegbai, regretted that contractors for over five years have not been paid for the services they rendered to the commission, describing it as an act of wickedness.

Ijegbai said it is painful that the contractors used their money to execute the projects, regretting that such projects have been commissioned and put in use whereas the money invested by the contractors has not been paid back.

He said: “We are here because we have done jobs for NDDC for the past four years. We have been waiting for our payment, but they are giving us all kinds of excuse.

“As it stands now we can no longer afford our children’s schools fees. We collected most of that money from financial institutions and we used our houses as collateral, now the banks are collecting our houses.

“We have pleaded; we have gone to Abuja, but to no avail. NDDC has not been like this. Before once you earn your IPC you will be paid but we don’t know what is happening since the inception of this present board.

He, however, called on President Muhammadu Buhari and all well-meaning Nigerians to intervene to ensure that their money is paid.

Also, the Director of Board of Trustees of the association, Victor Fakar, noted that if the commission had in mind to clear the debt they would have done so at ease, adding that NDDC was not committed to paying the debts.

He said: “We will continue this protest. He (Akwa) feels he is everything. If he gives his words he should hold on to them. He promised to pay in December but we did not get anything.

Meanwhile, some legal practitioners based in Bayelsa State have asked a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State to sack the Interim Administrator of NDDC, Mr. Effiong Akwa, and stop him from parading himself as such.

The lawyers are also asking the court to order Akwa to refund all salaries and allowances paid to him by the Federal Government to the nation’s treasury single account during the period he has been in office as the Interim Administrator of the NDDC.

The lawyers, Wisdom Adikwe and Egbamokumo Zikenah of E. G. Aderigha Law Firm, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, listed the Federal Government as the first defendant, Akwa as second defendant and NDDC as third.

In a 10-point claim against the defendants, the plaintiffs are also seeking a mandatory order of the court compelling the Federal Government to constitute the board of the commission and a declaration that the position of an Interim Administrator violates the act setting up the board.

Gov Ishaku warns contractors against delay, threatens revocation

Contractors handling various projects in Taraba State have been urged to sit up or have their contracts revoked.

This was the directive of the State Governor, Arc. Darius Dickson Ishaku, who on Tuesday took his time to commission some projects not executed by him but by individuals in Kurmi Local Government Council of the State.

He vowed not to hesitate in replacing any contractor that failed to meet up with the contract agreement made with the State government.

Ishaku, who also spoke on the ongoing marraraba /Baissa road project, said all the needed funds to complete the project have been set aside by his administration.

He, however, warned that his administration would not hesitate to source for another contractor to complete the project if any of the contractors presently working on the road was found wanting.

Though works, are still ongoing on the road, the governor has set aside the second quarter of next year for the commissioning.

Applauding the hands of friendships being extended by the inhabitants of the area to the contractors, the completion of the road, he said, will be in fulfilment of his election campaign promises to the people while canvassing for their votes in 2015.

With barely 15 months to the expiration of his tenure, the governor, has again promised to bring more projects that would open the council to investors.

  • A’Ibom indigenous contractors appeal for government patronage

    By Samuel Ogenyi, Uyo

The Association of Ibom Contractors have appealed to the new Commissioner for Works, Prof. Eno Ibanga, to solve the problem of non patronage of indigenous contractors  by the ministry in the award of contract for construction of roads and other infrastructure  in the state.

In a press statement signed by the National president and Secretary, Lawrence Bassey and Victor Mathew, respectively and made available to newsmen in Uyo yesterday, the association however identified their problems to include lack of confidence in their capacity and poor quality of jobs delivery among others.

The body made up of Akwa Ibom indigenes and non-indigenes resident in the state, commended the governor for choosing a man with impressive credentials to take charge of infrastructural renaissance of the state.

It would be recalled that, Ibanga is the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom state University, where he put in place lots of infrastructure for the benefit of the students and the university community.

“With Professor Ibanga’s pedigree as a top-notch academician widely acclaimed for his integrity, we are impressed by his appointment and have learnt valuable lessons from him in his acceptance to work as the chief servant to the people of Akwa Ibom state in the Works ministry.

“We draw the attention of the commissioner to the numerous problems confronting indigenous and Akwa Ibom-based businesses and companies in the state’s construction sector. These challenges we believe will be surmounted during his watch.

“The challenges include, low and most times, non-existent patronage of Akwa Ibom based companies and businesses by foreign and out-of-state construction firms operating in the state, non-compliance with Local Content Laws, directives and advisories by multinational companies, capital flight, poor quality of jobs delivery among others.

“As the state’s sole interest group operating in Nigeria’s construction industry, the Association of Ibom Contractors assured the new Works Commissioner of their full cooperation, support and collaboration in ensuring that he achieves his goals and objectives in the task of building the Akwa Ibom state of everybody’s dreams.” The statement said.

  • Edo 2020: Benin stadium to be ready in March, says contractor

Edo 2020: Benin stadium to be ready in March, says contractor

Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, will be ready to host the upcoming National Sports Festival (NSF) in March, the contractor handling the reconstruction of the stadium has said.

Femi James, Site Engineer for the contractor, Peculiar Ultimate Consult, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Benin that the reconstruction work had attained over 90 per cent completion.

He assured that the reconstructed facility would be delivered in time for the 20th National Sport Festival (NSF) to be  hosted in Edo in March.

According to him, Edo will have a brand new stadium with modern sporting facilities aside football when completed.

He said the reconstruction work that had seen the entire stadium complex transformed, had between 100 to 150 construction workers working on a daily basis.

“We have a new 4-in-1 Tennis Court and spectator stand. We had to pull down what we have here before and reconstruct. This new one is now four times of what was pulled down here.

“Fitted along with the new tennis court is a new two-storey secretariat; what was there before as secretariat was a makeshift structure.

“Another interesting thing is that we have built a new Squash Court and   spectator stand with a befitting secretariat to go with.

“We also have a brand new single lawn tennis court for finals with spectators stand.

“We also built, though attached to the main bowl, weightlifting and para lifting hall. What we had there before was also a makeshift one.

“Presently, we are building a new gymnasium hall for Weightlifting, Kickboxing and Boxing,” he said.

James said the new additions had hindered the delivering of the project as earlier promised.

“Most of these buildings were not in the original plan of the stadium reconstruction work, but they had to be brought in to provide  modern sport facilities to the sport loving people of the state.

“You can see that most of the projects such as the swimming pool and some others have been completed.

“For the mainbowl, we have started laying the tartan tracks. We are almost done with the laying of the black granus and will commence with the red granus by weekend. On the whole, everything about the tartan track will be completed on January 31,” he stated.

Edo 2020 games will take place between March 22 and April 1.

It will be the third time the state will be hosting the NSF, having hosted the games as old Bendel state in 1981 and as Edo  in 2002. (NAN)
