Emir of Zazzau: Kingmakers protest against State Governors’ Action

Kingmakers of the Zazzau emirate have protested cancellation of the selection process for a new Emir by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Last Thursday, they screened eleven princes – from four dynasties – who indicated interest to succeed the late monarch, Shehu Idris.

Three came tops after voting and their names were submitted to the Secretary to the State Government, Balarabe Abbas, the next day.

One week after the SSG and other state officials witnessed how the top 3 emerged, the confirmation of a new Emir is still being awaited.

Fears that the process would take a longer time were confirmed on Wednesday when El-Rufai announced that the kingmakers voting had been jettisoned.

To the chagrin of many who already accused him of “delayed tactics”, the governor annulled the exercise on the ground that two applicants were excluded.

El-Rufai disclosed that the kingmakers were engaged in a fresh process.

“KDSG directed a new round of the selection process after cancelling the initial process, which excluded two interested applicants.” he tweeted.

Close watchers are insisting that the law empowers the emirate functionaries to recommend to the governor. They are also criticizing El-Rufai for allegedly hijacking the process.

“The governor first claimed he had not received the kingmakers’ report. Then said he was reading books on the matter, then meets the President, then cancels the process. This is laughable”, an indigene said.

A source told our correspondent that as El-Rufai tweeted on Wednesday, the kingmakers met the government’s delegates at the State House in Kawo.

“Ibrahim Aminu (Waziri Zazzau), Umar Muhammad (Fagacin Zazzau), Muhammad Abbas (Makama Ƙarami), and Dalhatu Ƙasimu (Limamin Juma’a) were seen there around 6pm. Muhammad Aliyu (Limamin Kona) arrived around 9pm”, he said.

“The kingmakers maintained their position; that they stand by the cancelled process and selection of three princes – Bashir Aminu (Iyan Zazzau), Aminu Shehu Idris (Turakin Zazzau), Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru (Yariman Zazzau).

“They reminded state officials that the SSG conducted the voting process, using government’s criteria. They complained about not being officially notified about the nullification tweeted by the governor.

“They then completed the assessment forms of the two ‘excluded applicants’ who submitted their documents. The duo are the reason the governor cancelled the initial process. The kingmakers did not vote again.”

The two applicants Balarabe Tijjani (Bunu Zazzau) and Shehu Umar (Sarkin Dajin Zazzau).

The source added that the kingmakers were asked to reconfirm their votes.

“They reaffirmed that they voted consciously and without prejudice, in line with the governor’s public directive in his closing remarks of the third-day prayer for late Emir Shehu Idris.

“Sanusi Lamido, the former Emir of Kano, came on Zoom video to plead to them for a change of heart for his friend, Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli (Magajin Garin), but they flatly refused. They returned to Zaria around 11pm on Wednesday.”

Bamalli, the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand, was among the eight the kingmakers dropped during screening.

Meanwhile, policemen and soldiers have been deployed to some strategic parts of Zaria.

They are currently around Kofan Doka, Babban Dodo and at the Emir of Zazzau’s Palace.

With the two excluded applicants now added, the names of all 13 interested princes are Balarabe Tijjani (Bunu Zazzau), Shehu Umar (Sarkin Dajin Zazzau), Bashir Aminu (Iyan Zazzau), Aminu Shehu Idris (Turakin Zazzau), Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru (Yariman Zazzau), Ahmad Nuhu Bammali (Magajin Garin Zazzau).

Others are Abdulkarim Aminu (Wanban Zazzau), Aminu Umaru Idris (Dangaladiman Zazzau), Bello Umaru Idris (Baraden Zazzau), Saidu àMailafiya (Ciroman Zazzau), Shitu Dikko (Dangaladiman Waziri Zazzau), Sambo Shehu Idris (Sarkin Kudun Zazzau), and Yusuf Shehu Idris (Sadaukin Zazzau).

Zazzau Emir’s death expose El-rufai’s Apartheid, Segregationist system – ADA

…Say’s el-rufai showcase status differential between Northern and S/Kaduna people

    From Ujah Simon, Kaduna

Group under the guise of Adara Development Association, ADA, from southern part of Kaduna state, have accused Governor Nasir Elrufai of Kaduna state of apartheid and segregation. system in Kaduna ADA said that the death of Emir of Zazzau (Dr) Shehu Idris has finally exposed Governor Elrufai’s apartheid and segregationist system in Kaduna State against the people of Southern kadunaThe body said there are many other instances of the Governor’s segregationist policies that could be cited in the state, including the balkanization of the largest Christian majority Adara Chiefdom whose size now covers only two local governments, while he left Zazzau Emirate intact with ten local governments. The association made the assertions in a statement issued and signed by it President Awemi Dio Maisamari and made available to journalists on Saturday in kaduna State.
The body stated that why it sympathised with the Zazzau people most deeply because of the loss of the revered Royal Father, it has brought back the sad memories and deep sorrow of the most abduction and gruesome murder of their revered 1st Class Royal Father, Dr. Raphael Maiwada Galadima (JP) of blessed memory. “We are however saddened and appalled to observe that Governor Elrufai has used this sober occasion to publicly showcase the status differential between Northern and Southern Kaduna people in his administration”, it stated.
ADA stated that “As a mark of well deserved honour to the late 1st Class Emir of Zazzau, who died naturally, three days mourning period and a public holiday were declared by the Governor. Also, in a matter of a few days, arrangements are in top gear to peacefully appoint a successor to the throne based on established Zazzau customs and traditions.
ADA lamented that, the 1st Class monarch of Adara Chiefdom was abducted like a commoner and eventually assassinated in a very humiliating and suspicious circumstances. “And yet the Governor did not consider his tragic demise deserving of any extraordinary action, special honour, press statements, tributes or even ceremonial calls for public mourning by the state government.
This, the association noted, was again followed by the greatest mark of dishonour and treachery to their monarch and Adara people as a whole, adding that their people were shocked to learnt that Adara Chiefdom and Adara Traditional Council had been secretly scrapped by the Governor five months earlier before the death of their Monarch.
“The unacceptable scrapping of Adara Chiefdom and the creation of Kajuru Emirate on Adara land were made known a few days after the murder of our Royal Father. “Furthermore, even the investigation and prosecution of the masterminds and executors of the crime are not being given the publicity, importance and urgency they deserve.
“These are displays of sharply contrasting policies, actions, attitudes and body language by the Governor on the death of two 1st Class monarchs. “This shows his total and unapologetic disrespect and disdain for the traditional rulers and people of Southern Kaduna. “Therefore, the Emir’s death has finally unmasked Governor El-rufai’s apartheid and segregationist system in Kaduna State beyond any reasonable doubt”, the statement said. It further lamented that “Many other examples of the Governor’s segregationist policies can be cited in the state. He has balkanized the largest Christian majority Adara Chiefdom whose size covers only two local governments. But he has left Zazzau Emirate intact with ten local governments. He sympathizes and apologizes for Fulani terrorist attacks in Northern Kaduna but blames Southern Kaduna communities for the endless atrocities on their people by his kinsmen. “He has ignored the humanitarian crisis affecting tens of thousands of Fulani terrorist attack victims and internally displaced persons in Southern Kaduna. But he is prioritizing the construction of multi-billion Naira roads, buildings and markets for the benefit of some Hausa/Fulani Muslim localities and settlements.  “He has forcefully changed the nomenclatures of non-Muslim Chiefdoms in Southern Kaduna to open them up for Muslim settlers in the area. But he has also dubiously converted some Chiefdoms in the area to Emirates to marginalize non-Muslim citizens in the Chiefdoms”, it stated In Kajuru Local Government Area, ADA noted that Governor el-rufai even forcefully subjected the more than 95% Christian population, under the newly converted and tiny Kajuru Emirate enclave, saying this and ones listed above, are few, out of the many examples of religious and ethnic segregation, that characterized the full blown apartheid system in Kaduna State. “For several years now, Adara community in particular and the natives of Southern Kaduna in general have been crying out against the injustice of Elrufai’s government.
“The ubiquitous injustice is reflected in political domination, unfriendly policies, skewed appointments and project execution, selective justice and judicial bullying, economic deprivation and impoverishment, mal-administration and official high handedness, condonment of targeted insecurity, educational exclusion, cultural suppression, religious discrimination and moral double standards.
“With 51% and 56% of the  Kaduna state population and land area respectively, Southern Kaduna people should be equal partners with others in a democratic state. However, it is rather very unfortunate that Elrufai seems to be so fanatical about his tribe, religion and political leaning that truth and justice no longer matter in the state.
“Adara Development Association is therefore appealing to the Governor to rethink his principles and policies in the interest of sustainable social harmony, genuine peace and equitable development of the state. This is necessary in the over all interest of our helpless Adara community, other Southern Kaduna victims and even his privileged and favoured people who are also agonizing from the insensitivity of his administration”, it added.
When contacted twice, the el-Rufai’s Senior Special Assistant on media, Ibrahim Musa neither picked nor respond to sms to him, till time of filing the report. The police Command spokesman Muhammad jalige was also contacted but could not responded.
