Bottom side Norwich stun high-flying Leicester 1-0

Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis threw his relegation-threatened side a lifeline with a 70th minute goal to beat visiting English Premier League (EPL) high-flyers Leicester City 1-0 on Friday.

Norwich remain bottom of the table in spite of the three points, but are now only four points from the safety zone.

They are three points adrift of Watford and West Ham United, with Aston Villa another point ahead.

Leicester stay third, six points ahead of Chelsea who now have a game in hand.

Unmarked defender Lewis’s swerving strike was the Canaries’ first goal in open play since New Year’s Day, or more than 700 minutes of action.

The clean sheet was also only the home side’s second of the season.

Leicester, with top scorer Jamie Vardy left at home to nurse a calf strain, had the ball in the net after 49 minutes through Kelechi Iheanacho.

But it was ruled out after VAR replays showed the ball hit his arm. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Top-4 finish for Spurs will be incredible, Mourinho says

Top-4 finish for Spurs will be incredible, Mourinho says

Jose Mourinho says it will be “incredible” if his Tottenham Hotspur side finish in the top four of the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL), claiming it will rival his greatest achievements.

Tottenham were languishing in 14th place, 12 points behind third-placed Chelsea and 11 off the top four, when Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino in November.

On Saturday they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge knowing a win will take them above Mourinho’s old club into the top four.

Mourinho once claimed that achieving runners-up with Manchester United, 19 points behind Manchester City, in 2017/2018 was one of the best achievements in his trophy-laden managerial career.

However, he now says a top-four finish with Spurs will surpass it, especially as he is likely to be without leading strikers Harry Kane and Son Heung-min for the run-in.

“Stats are very silly sometimes, especially when people try to identify the quantitative stats and forget football is much more about the qualitative stats.

“But if you want to go in the direction of the numbers, Harry and Sonny score the majority of goals that Tottenham score.

“So, yes, not for me, or my achievement, but collectively, this group of boys, if they manage to finish in fourth without Harry and Sonny, it will be incredible,” Mourinho told reporters at the club’s training ground on Friday.

Based on a Premier League form table since Mourinho took over, only Liverpool and Manchester City have collected more points than Tottenham in the last 14 games.

In that period Tottenham have taken 11 points more than Chelsea.

“If it was about me I would prefer to skip to July 1 and start a pre-season with my players, without injuries and the same points as everybody else.

“But the boys have done fantastic to put themselves back in the positions where we belong.

“We have gone in three months from being closer to the relegation zone, which was never really a problem, to being one point behind the top four. An amazing effort from everyone.

“We have earned the right to fight for it. Some say it’s impossible but we are ready to fight,” Mourinho said.

In spite of Chelsea’s slump in form, Mourinho said Frank Lampard’s team are favourites to finish fourth.

He added that his return to Stamford Bridge, where he delivered three Premier League titles in two stints as manager, is nothing special.

“The only difference is that at the end of the game I can walk from the stadium to my house.

“But even that advantage I won’t use. I will come back with my players,” the Portuguese said

Mourinho said Erik Lamela, who came on in the 1-0 defeat by RB Leipzig on Wednesday, will play some part at Chelsea in spite of not being able to train fully.

He also added that midfield powerhouse Moussa Sissoko may return for the last six weeks of the season.(Reuters/NAN)

  • EPL: 10 Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs transfers that could still happen

EPL: 10 Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs transfers that could still happen

There have been just 22 new signings across 12 Premier League clubs so far during the January transfer window.

But, with the final week now in full swing, things are hotting up ahead of the 11pm deadline on Friday, Skysports reports.

Paul Pogba – Manchester United to Real Madrid

One transfer saga that will rumble onto next summer surrounds the future of Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Speaking to Sky Sports , the player’s agent Mino Raiola said the player will make a decision on whether he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.

“I don’t say anything for sure,” he said. “Today he is not happy because he is not playing. He is recovering. Paul if he does not play he is not happy.

“But I saw him go back to United when people did not think he would go back. People tend to forget that. People tend to imagine that United was the only club that he could have signed for. He chose United.

“Everybody knows the ambition from both parts is not being met the last years. Let’s be honest, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. So we need to see in the summer if Paul is still in the plans of United and if United is still in the plans of Paul.”

Christian Eriksen – Tottenham to Inter Milan

The first to surely get over the line, as early as Monday.

Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen is close to joining Inter Milan, with a medical scheduled for today. The 27-year-old is expected to complete a £16.8m move to Italy which could see him earn up to £320,000 per week.

Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta said, “You all know that we are negotiating with Tottenham.

“I am optimistic and I hope everything can be concluded quickly because the market closes on Friday and we hope to conclude the negotiations in the next few days.”

The performance of Giovani Lo Celso during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Southampton in the FA Cup on Saturday would suggest that Jose Mourinho has a ready-made replacement.

Lo Celso is currently on loan from Spanish side Real Betis but Spurs can secure a permanent deal this month for £27m or £34m at the end of the season.

“I think the boy is earning the decision [to sign him],” Mourinho told reporters at St Mary’s.

Bruno Fernandes – Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United

Manchester United are still after Bruno Fernandes.

He’s a world-class attacking midfielder and we’ve been told this week that he’s the best player in Portugal having been the Portuguese Player of the Year twice in a row.

A lot of people think he’s exactly what they’re looking for. The only problem is United aren’t offering Sporting enough. Sporting want £52m but United are offering £42m.

This came after the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, threw the deal into serious doubt when speaking to Sky Sports on a visit to England

“I don’t know,” he said when asked by Sky Sports if a fee was close to being agreed. “If he doesn’t leave now, he will leave for sure in the summer because Sporting have already spoken with other clubs. Something will happen but I am not sure if now or at the end of the season.”

We still await a breakthrough in negotiations.

Boubakary Soumare – Lille to Chelsea

Another player that United have been linked without throughout the window is Lille’s Soumare, but they face competition from Chelsea.

The French U21 international, described by team-mates at Lille as “Paul Pogba without the baggage”, has been earmarked to leave the Ligue 1 club this week.

Lille boss Christophe Galtier says he is unsure on the future of his player, saying last week: “I don’t know about Soumare. Nobody told me something about this situation. I don’t know if this could be his last game [against Paris Saint-Germain].”

With that game now out of the way, the moment of truth is arriving.

Islam Slimani – Leicester to Manchester United

Will Manchester United sign a striker? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted United need “quality” signings to help his mentally fatigued young squad after the 2-0 home defeat to Burnley last week – the fifth loss since December 22.

The scramble has turned desperate – Odion Ighalo and Islam Slimani are two of a number of players United have looked at as they try to bring in a striker on loan following the long-term injury to Marcus Rashford.

It would be the biggest shock of the window, but time is running out for United to get a striker over the line.

Solskjaer has insisted the club are still working on reinforcements in a “difficult” market – and signing one of the two could prove to be a fall-back option if a stellar name cannot be lured to the club on a short-term deal.

Edinson Cavani – PSG to Atletico Madrid

Edinson Cavani was left out of Paris Saint-Germain’s squad for their match against Lille on Sunday night – with manager Thomas Tuchel admitting it was due speculation surrounding the forward’s future

The Uruguay international has been tracked by Chelsea, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, and the Uruguayan is said to have his heart set on joining the latter club.

Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett on United’s link with the striker, “If you look at the facts, he fits exactly their profile.

“United have done this in the past. Look at Radamel Falcao, look at Henrik Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“They go for world-class strikers with huge reputations that are coming to the latter ends of their careers, and they’ve been very successful for United, on the whole. It’s kind of in United’s DNA.

“Cavani is 32 and his contract expires at the end of the season with PSG. He hasn’t started a game for PSG since November 9 and all of that points to the fact he’s available.”

Mykola Matviyenko – Shakhtar Donetsk to Arsenal

Flamengo defender Pablo Mari arrived at Heathrow over the weekend alongside Arsenal’s technical director Edu, but Mikel Arteta does not look like he is finished with his January transfer business.

With Arsenal set to complete the first signing of the Arteta era, might a second defensive reinforcement follow suit?

The Gunners look to be finally adding some solidity to a leaky backline – having been frustrated in their pursuit this month of Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake and Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng.

They will have to pay £30m if they are to buy Ukrainian defender Mykola Matviyenko from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The player’s agent, Yuriy Danchenko, says the clubs are in talks about a deal for the 23-year-old, who has 18 months left on his contract. Watch this space.

Moussa Dembele – Lyon to Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard made his priorities for the final week of this January transfer window very clear ahead of his side’s FA Cup fourth-round tie with Hull.

He said, “The impetus to bring in a striker or players who can get on the end of the chances we’re creating is there.

“I think we have to be really honest about that. We had more than 20 shots in both games against Arsenal and Newcastle so we have to find solutions. We’ve lost points because of these situations.”

Lyon striker Moussa Dembele was watched by scouts this week but the French club are desperate to hold onto him.

The Frenchman has made no secret of his desire to one day return to England to play in the Premier League, where he has previously made just three appearances as a youngster with Fulham.

A switch back to the capital may be more appealing for the 23-year-old than a move to United, given the lure of Champions League football.

Krzysztof Piatek – AC Milan to Tottenham

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho says the club need a striker and are “doing everything possible” to sign one during the January transfer window – but time is running out.

Spurs laboured to victory over Norwich having fired blanks at Watford, underlining the need to ease the burden on Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son in the absence of Harry Kane.

Piatek is struggling for game time with AC Milan, and the Poland striker’s father said last week that his son was “too good to be left on the bench”, stirring up speculation that he could be about to leave the San Siro.

With the European Championships this summer, the 24-year-old is desperate for regular first-team football, and while several Premier League clubs including Everton, West Ham and Newcastle have expressed an interest, it would cost £25m to prise him away from Milan.

Olivier Giroud – Chelsea to Inter Milan

World Cup winner Giroud is not part of Chelsea’s plans and has one foot out of the door at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard has said, “There’s been contact with other clubs, and if and when that’s agreed, I’ll let you know, but it’s not yet so he’s still our player.”

It would be remarkable if the striker were to remain at the club beyond this window, given his importance to the French national team ahead of next summer’s championships.

At 33, he will want to head into that tournament match fit, and it appeared earlier this month that a move to Inter Milan was a done deal. Antonio Conte was said to be desperate to get Giroud to the San Siro having been the man who signed him from Arsenal for Chelsea in January 2018.

A fee hasn’t been agreed between the two clubs, which led Inter to turn their attentions to former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente as part of a swap deal with Roma involving Matteo Politano.

But a twist emerged at the end of last week with Sky in Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that the Llorente loan to Inter is off, which will lead to the resumption of negotiations between Inter and Chelsea over Giroud.

  • EPL: Burnley fight back to sink Leicester City

EPL: Burnley fight back to sink Leicester City

Burnley recovered from a goal down to beat high-flying Leicester City 2-1 at Turf Moor on Sunday, ending their four-match losing streak in the English Premier League (EPL).

Sean Dyche’s Clarets failed to score a first half goal for an 11th successive league game, and their problems worsened when midfielder Harvey Barnes put the visitors ahead.

He scored with a stunning solo effort in the 33rd minute.

Jack Cork lost the ball in midfield and Burnley-born winger Barnes broke forward, racing goalwards and past Ben Mee before firing home.

The hosts responded after the interval with striker Chris Wood scoring the equaliser from a rebound, after Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel saved a header from Mee.

Third-placed Leicester had an opportunity to reclaim the lead when Mee brought down Barnes in the box, but Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope kept out Jamie Vardy’s weak penalty kick.

The turnaround was complete, with 11 minutes remaining, when Ashley Westwood blasted in after a Charlie Taylor cross from the left to ensure Burnley took all three points.

It lifted them to 14th place in the table, five points above the relegation zone.

“I thought we deserved to win the game but we didn’t take our chances,” said Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

“A mixture of their goalkeeper making some brilliant saves and our finishing, and we somehow lost the game,” he added.

Dyche credited his side for delivering when many had begun to question their chances of survival this season.

“I thought the performance was there and we had worked on it all week. So, I was pleased with that. We delivered with a mentality to perform under a few question marks,” he added.

Pope, who made some vital saves in the second half, was delighted the team’s losing streak was over.

“It’s a massive win for us. The lads worked so hard and the atmosphere was electric. You go on bad runs during the season. So, to snap them quickly is important,” he said.

“To lose four on the spin is hard, but to go a goal down and react like we did against a good team is great.”(Reuters/NAN)

  • Tottenham ban fan who threw cup at Chelsea goalkeeper

Tottenham ban fan who threw cup at Chelsea goalkeeper

Tottenham Hotspur have identified and banned a supporter who threw a cup at Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga during Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat for Spurs, the English Premier League club said on Tuesday.

With his side already two goals down, Kepa was targeted by a supporter behind the goal in the 65th minute.

The cup missed the Spanish goalkeeper by inches when he walked across his six-yard box.

“We can confirm that we have identified and issued an immediate ban to the individual responsible for throwing a cup at Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga during Sunday’s EPL home fixture.

“We shall continue to take the strongest action possible against anyone found to be behaving in this way,” the club said in a statement.

Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger was also allegedly racially abused in the match, and the German defender urged the club to find and punish those involved.

Spurs said their investigation into that “remains ongoing”.(Reuters/NAN)

  • Aubameyang goal earns Arteta’s Arsenal draw at Bournemouth

Aubameyang goal earns Arteta’s Arsenal draw at Bournemouth

A second-half equaliser from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Mikel Arteta a point in his first game as Arsenal manager as his side came back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Bournemouth in the Premier League on Thursday.

The two sides came into the game in poor form, with Bournemouth having lost six of their last seven and Arsenal only winning once since beating Bournemouth 1-0 at the Emirates on Oct. 6.

Arteta restored Mesut Ozil to the starting line-up and the German forward looked sharp in the opening exchanges, but despite Arteta energetically encouraging his team from the sidelines, they failed to create many chances.

Arsenal’s sloppiness was punished when they gave the ball away cheaply on the left wing and Bournemouth sliced through them quickly, with midfielder Dan Gosling stabbing home Jack Stacey’s centre from close range to give the home side the lead.

The Gunners equalised in the 63rd minute as Reiss Nelson’s shot deflected into the path of Aubameyang, and he swivelled to rifle the ball home before a wild celebration with the traveling fans that earned him a yellow card.

Both sides created opportunities in the pouring rain, but neither could grab a winner and the draw left Arsenal in 11th place on 24 points, with Bournemouth four points further back in 16th.

“We missed a lot of chances in the second half, we should get the three points today but that can happen,” Aubameyang said.

“I think the attitude of the boys was great but we have to improve our chances.”

Arteta was disappointed not to win the game, but said his players had performed well.

“In terms of attitude, desire and commitment it was better than I expect. They are not used to playing at this rhythm,” said the 37-year-old Spaniard, who spent five seasons as a player at the club.

“I am still learning about the players, about the priorities, to make them more secure when they jump on to the pitch. My only aim now is to find solutions, to attack better, defend better,” Arteta added. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Firmino brace as Liverpool crush Leicester to go 13 points clear

Firmino brace as Liverpool crush Leicester to go 13 points clear

Rampant Liverpool moved 13 points clear at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) after Roberto Firmino struck twice in an emphatic 4-0 win at second-placed Leicester City.

The victory was inspired in large part by attacking right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold who created three goals and scored one himself.

With Firmino deadly in front of goal and Liverpool in total control throughout, it was a performance that suggested the title race is all but over at the half-way stage.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has been vocal in his criticism of his team’s intense schedule but the European champions showed no signs of any adverse influence from their trip to Qatar.

There they had won the Club World Cup.

A trip to Leicester, who went into the game unbeaten at home this season, was the toughest test of the season.

But Klopp’s men passed the test with barely a hint of drama.

It will now take an extraordinary slump for them to fail to win their first title of the Premier League era.

“We played really good football after all the travelling and intense period. Yes, it is the best performance of the season and we controlled it. To get four goals is something to be proud of,” said Alexander-Arnold.

“You don’t really think you will be 13 points clear, but we are happy to be in this position and we won’t take it for granted. This is the Premier League and anything can happen,” he added.

Popping up in the inside-left position, Alexander-Arnold floated a pinpoint cross to the backpost for Brazilian Firmino to head Liverpool into the lead in the 31st minute.

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel then produced an outstanding close-range save to foil Sadio Mane and Liverpool would have been disappointed to go in at half-time with only the solitary goal.

Liverpool were utterly dominant but had to wait until the 71st minute to extend their lead when Alexander-Arnold’s corner kick struck the left arm of Caglar Soyuncu.

Substitute James Milner slotted home the penalty kick with his first touch of the ball.

Firmino then made it 3-0, collecting and firing home a powerfully-struck low cross from Alexander-Arnold.

Then the 21-year-old England international rounded off the rout, hammering a low shot into the far, bottom corner at the end of a swift counter-attack.

Liverpool have 52 points from 18 games, with Leicester on 39 points from 19 matches and Manchester City 14 points behind the leaders before their game at Wolves on Sunday.

“It’s one of many successful nights so far this season,” said Milner.

“We are not even halfway. So much can change and happen. The strength of this team is we tale it one game at a time.”(Reuters/NAN)
