Oyo Governor, Makinde Suspends Campaign Activities Over Fuel, Naira Crisis

The Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has announced the suspension of his campaign activities over the unending fuel and new naira-note crisis.

Governor Seyi Makinde, whose campaign trail has visited some parts of Oyo State, said this during the Flag-off of the Omi-Adio-Ido Road on Friday.

The Governor said the suspension is in solidarity with the people over anti-people economy policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun confirmed this.

In the statement, Makinde, who was in Ido to continue his campaign, directed that all campaign activities be suspended until further notice.

Olatubosun said Governor Makinde noted that the suffering of his people is too much, saying he was elected to protect their interests and well-being.

Dr. Olatubosun said Governor Makinde, who flagged-off the Omi Adio-Ido Road in an emotional laden voice, directed leaders of the Party in Oyo State to suspend the campaign.

“As a mark of honour to citizens and residents of Oyo State, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde has directed that all campaign activities of the party at all levels be suspended until further notice”, the statement read.

Our Infrastructure Projects Will Drive Economic Growth — Makinde

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said the various infrastructure projects being executed by his administration are targeted at not only development of the state but also economic growth.

Makinde said this on Saturday when he received the leadership of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, in his office at the state secretariat, Agodi Ibadan.

The NGE leadership was in the state for their Standing Committee meeting.

Makinde, who later took the team on a tour of some of the ongoing projects being executed by his government, said his administration was unrelenting in providing good governance to the people of Oyo State.

    .

The governor and some key government functionaries led the team to visit the newly constructed Methodist Model Primary School, Bodija and the completed 65 kilometres Ibadan-Iseyin road project.

They also visited the site of the ongoing 78 kilometers Iseyin-Ogbomoso road project; ongoing Lere Adigun Housing Estate and ongoing Ibadan Airport dual carriage way, Alakia.

The team also visited the headquarters of the State Security Network, codenamed ‘Amotekun’ situated at Akinyele Road, Moniya, Ibadan and the newly rehabilitated/upgraded Primary Health Centre, Iseyin.

Makinde said the priority given to the Amotekun outfit and other conventional security agencies in the state was because “security is one of the major pillars of our accelerated development.”

He said the establishment of the Amotekun had been of great benefits in tackling security challenges, complementing the efforts of the conventional security agencies in addressing insecurity across the state.

On Ibadan-Iseyin road, the governor said the project was awarded in November 2019, few months after his assumption of office, and the contractor delivered the project in 2021.

On the 78 kilometers Iseyin-Ogbomoso road project that was awarded recently, Makinde said that 17 kilometres of the project, from Iseyin end, and 16 kilometres from Ogbomoso end, had been asphalted.

He hinted that all the bridges on the road had been done, hoping that the project would be completed for inauguration in January 2023.

On the PHC Iseyin, he said his administration was targeting to have one functional PHC in each of the 351 wards in the state.

He said the idea was for people not to go beyond one kilometre radius from wherever they are living to access primary health care facility.

On the Ibadan Airport road being dualised, Makinde said “the Airport itself is central to expanding our economy.

“I tell people that if you want to expand your economy and the airport only has one flight in a day, it does not tell a good story.

“As a matter of fact, we believe aircraft should be landing and taking off every 30 minutes in the airport if it must have an impact on the economy.

“We have been able to put an aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility at the airport, the only thing that will remain to make the airport fully competitive is the extension of the runway from 2.7 kilometres to 3.3 kilometres.

“Once we are able to do that, then we can do other possible things around there.”

Earlier, the president of the Guild, Mr Mustapha Isah, said the presence of the team in Ibadan was an opportunity to look at government  projects in the state.

“We take decisions based on data, science and logic,” he said. “If they ban them in Lagos, how long will it take them to realise the benefits? The situation in Lagos is the same as ours.

“We have no intention of banning Okada. We will regulate them, we will identify them and the criminals will be dealt with.

“I have seen people with their cars jump Okada to go to the bank. They are serving a purpose.

“We have started identity management. If we say ban because Lagos did it, what next? Those riding Okada legitimately you take them out of business.”

Makinde To Name New Olubadan On Monday

The Oyo State Government said it will announce the next Olubadan of Ibadanland on Monday following the death of the former occupant of the throne, Oba Saliu Adetunji on January 2.

Speaking during the final burial ceremony of late Olubadan Oba Saliu Adetunji on Saturday, Governor Seyi Makinde said he had received the letter of recommendation from the kingmakers and would do the needful without further delay.

“I have received a letter from the Olubadan- in-Council and by the grace of God, on Monday, I will make the official announcement of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland on,” Makinde was quoted as saying in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Taiwo Adisa,

“This is another victory for Ibadan traditional institution. The process and the system were never broken. So there is nothing to fix. So, I can say that we have now returned to our normal way of installing a new monarch in Ibadanland. Now, it is a system that everyone wants to imitate, which shows how we set the pace in Oyo State.

“When the person who came to represent the Chief of Imam was praying, he appealed that we should take care of all Baba left before he joined his ancestors. And I want to believe that we all know that I, Seyi Makinde, am one of those Baba cherished. Therefore, don’t leave me. Continue to pray for my administration.”

    God Took Control

According to him, the crisis trailing the Olubadan chieftaincy law following the review has been amicably resolved. The move, he said, is another victory for Ibadanland and Oyo State as a whole.

The governor said he had never hidden his decision on where to stand when there was a crisis following the review of the chieftaincy laws by the immediate past administration.

“When the crisis of the Obaship in Ibadanland started, I was right here in the Liberty Stadium and said that if there is any division or faction in the land, I will pitch my tent with the King,” the governor said.

“Today, I am also happy that the crisis we have been witnessing on the issue of Olubadan stool has been settled. God has really taken control of everything.”

2023: Don’t Vote Anyone Above 70 Years for President, Makinde Tells Nigerians

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has warned Nigerians against electing people who are above 70 years of age as president in 2023.
He said that instead of electing people who are old enough to be grandpa, Nigerians should elect a young person as president in 2023.

The Oyo State governor in a video clip made available to reporters in Abuja, spoke during the 65th birthday anniversary and thanksgiving service of Rev Samson Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and launching of a ministry.

Two prominent presidential aspirants above 70 years are former vice president Atiku Abubakar (who will be 76 by the time elections are held in 2023) and former Lagos State governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who will be 71 in 2023.

Makinde, who is a chieftain of the PDP charged Nigerians to choose wisely in 2023.
He advised them to elect people that have the energy to serve the country.

According to Makinde, “We have seen a lot of elder statesmen who want to run this country at age 75 or 78. I want them to think twice and I am saying to the people of Oyo State and Nigeria that this world is not easy.

“It is possible for you to delegate, ask people to go all over the place but when they are reporting to you, if something has not been added, a few things may have been removed,” he said.

“We are in election season basically and what I will say to us as a people is that we need to choose wisely and elect the people who have the energy to truly serve the country.”, he reiterated.
