Insecurity: Majority of the Arab countries do not care about our situation – Gov Zulum

The Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, says the state has received more help and humanitarian support from western countries than the Arab countries in its fight against Boko Haram.

Governor Zulum stated this when he received the Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Saleh Fheied Saleh in his office on Tuesday evening January 5.

    In his words

“In the midst of challenges with the Boko Haram insurgency, countries from the west have shown more concern for the plight of Borno people than rich Arab nations whose people share similarity of religion and culture with the majority of Borno citizens,” he said.

I am a practical person. I work with the realities I see on ground. In the face of our challenges over the years, we have received humanitarian support from the UK and other parts of Europe, the United States, Canada, from Japan and a host of others who have demonstrated concern and have made efforts to support our traumatized citizens in many ways especially on food, medicals and livelihoods.

However, that level of concern never came from Arab countries with whom millions of Borno people share similarity in religion and culture. We even have indigenous shuwa Arabs in Borno and this shows how our histories are tied.

We have made severe efforts, written and visited embassies of Arab countries, especially those that are rich and not dealing with crises, but obviously, majority of the Arabs do not care about our situation, neither do they support us.

The Arabs have not shown concern to us. Your visit, however, has renewed our hope especially and we are very grateful for your visit”

Gov Zulum writes NEMA on 800,000 IDPs in need of food

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno has appealed for urgent intervention by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the plight of about 800,000 displaced people in need of food in areas affected by insurgency in the state.

The information is in a statement by Malam Isa Gusau, the governor’s Speacial Adviser on Communications and Strategy, on Friday in Maiduguri.

Gusau stated that the governor made the appeal in a letter he presented during a visit to NEMA headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, where he informed the agency’s boss about the critical needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in 11 towns.

The governor’s aide noted that “Gov. Zulum in a letter, informed NEMA’s Director General, Retired AVM Muhammadu Alhaji Mohammed, that IDPs in Monguno, Bama, Damboa, Gwoza, Dikwa, Gamboru, Ngala, Damasak, Banki, Pulka and Gajiram need urgent access to food supplies.”

Koshobe, located north-east, is an agrarian community under Jere Local Government Area, where most Hausas engaged in farming and fishing is about 25km drive from Maiduguri, the state capital.

According to him, though his administration has launched a security outfit called ‘Agric -Ranchers’ comprised of military, paramilitary and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force including Hunters/Vigilantes safeguard farmers, there is the need for collective responsibility especially from the parts of the Federal Government, and Governments of border countries of Chad, Niger and Cameroun Republic to team up and address the lingering Boko Haram crisis in the region.

He regretted the escalating killings perpetrated by armed insurgents in some parts of the state and assured that his administration will soon recruit additional Civilian Joint Task Force to complement efforts of the security operatives in the fight against Boko Haram.
“I can admit that the dreaded Boko Haram sect are still existing strongly in many parts of our state especially in the Sambisa Forest, River Fringes of Koshobe and Lake Chad Basin posing threats to over 6 million people in the state.

“As you are aware that this administration has launched a security outfit called ‘Agric -Ranchers’ comprised of military, paramilitary and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force including Hunters/Vigilantes safeguard farmers, there is the need for collective responsibility especially from the parts of the Federal Government, and Governments of border countries of Chad, Niger and Cameroun Republic to team up address the lingering Boko Haram crisis in the region.

“You have seen this morning, we buried 44 recovered corpses according to Islamic rites, I was informed that over 70 farmers were slaughtered while harvesting their rice in Koshobe village, but as it is, more corpses are still lying there waiting for evacuation.

Gov. Zulum joins relatives, residents to bury over 43 farmers slaughtered in Borno

Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, led relatives and residents to bury 43 farmers slaughtered by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The funeral held at the Zabarmari area of Borno early morning on Sunday, according to a statement from the state government.

The statement was titled, ‘Zabarmari: Zulum leads horrified kinsmen to bury 43 farmers killed by Boko Haram’, on Sunday.

The victims lived in Zabarmari, a farming community in Jere Local Government Area, famous for rice cultivation and local processing.

They were attacked on Saturday, at Koshebe village, a place in Mafa Local Government Area.

Zulum, during his visit, was told that the death toll was yet to be fully ascertained.

“Your Excellency, as you have seen here, 43 corpses were buried, but others have not been retrieved from the scene of the incident. Nobody can tell you the exact number of people killed. Some of the victims are still missing,” a resident was quoted as telling the governor.

Zulum, who subsequently addressed the bereaved community, said people were living in “very difficult situations”.

The statement quoted the governor as saying, “It is disheartening that more than 40 citizens were slaughtered while they were working in their farmlands. Our people are in very difficult situations, they are in two different extreme conditions, on one side they stay at home they may be killed by hunger and starvation, on the other, they go out to their farmlands and risk getting killed by the insurgents.

“This is very sad. We are still appealing to the Federal Government to ensure the recruitment of more of our youths in the CJTF and hunters into the Nigerian military and the Civil Defence so that they can form part of the agro rangers that will protect farmers. We need many boots to protect farmlands and our youths understand the terrain. We will not lose hope because we have to remain optimistic about ending the insurgency,” Zulum said.

Zulum is ‘better than me in all ramifications’ – Ex- Brono Governor reveals

The immediate past governor of Borno State Kashim Shettima has said his successor Babagana Zulum is “better than me in all ramifications.”

Shettima, now representing Borno Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, also described Zulum as a trustworthy leader.

The Senator disclosed this on Sunday while delivering a paper at a Public Lecture organized by a Coalition of Youths Groups in Birnin Kebbi

He explained that he crossed a number of hurdles to eventually arrive at choosing his successor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, whom he also described as a trustworthy politician.

The former governor advised leaders to realise that leadership was a trust from God Almighty, adding that, it should be seen as a temporal session that one must account for in the hereafter.

“As leaders, we must put a sense of mentorship, train the youth to the best of our ability, bearing in mind that we cannot live forever,” Shettima advised.

He stressed the need for the youth to be committed in the pursuit of education, to comfortably drive the country to the promised land.

In his speech at the occasion, Kebbi State Governor, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, urged youths in the country to learn to support the evolution of future leaders.

According to Bagudu, “Mentorship involves a lot of risks. it’s one thing to mentor and succeeds, while it’s another one to mentor and fails.

“The youths must hear this, as risk-taking is an element of mentorship. This is imperative for them to support the process .”

Bagudu stated that good leaders must focus on mentoring future leaders that will be better than them and not like them.

The Kebbi governor also noted that this was the only way the society could thrive and get better.

He extolled Shattima for sharing his vast experience in mentoring one of Nigeria’s finest leaders, Prof. Babagana Zulum.

“He was however silent on the formidable risks he took in doing so, although he mildly alluded to that,” Bagudu added.
