Gombe prohibits cattle movement in the state

The Gombe State Government under Governor Inuwa Yahaya has banned the movement of cattle from other states into Gombe as part of its effort to curb farmers-herders clashes.

Mohammed Magaji Gettado, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, announced the development while addressing journalists immediately after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor.

The council also banned cattle movement from one local government to the other till January 2023 to maintain food production in the state.

The commissioner also explained that Nigerian farmers have nothing to eat now that they have finished what they produced because they got 10-15 per cent of what they were supposed to get.

“In view of this, there is a need for government to take serious measures to at least take care of the little we have on our farmers. We intend to restrict the movement of cattle from one local government to another because most of the destruction is done by indigenous cattle in Gombe State.

Night grazing is one of the issues we are having between farmers and herders from 6 pm is very dangerous. Usually, they destroy farms, no night grazing from 6 pm to 6 am as far as Gombe is concerned.

“We have directed the leadership of Myetti Allah to make sure that no children are allowed to shepherd cattle because it is one of the causes of farmers/herders conflict.”
