    Edu seeks UN support for lasting solution to Nigeria’s humanitarian crisis

    The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu has canvassed for the support from the United Nations for lasting solution to Nigeria’s humanitarian crisis.
    Edu made this move at the gathering of world leaders at United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, meeting on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York.

    Edu at the meeting called for collaborative efforts between the UN and the Nigerian Government to provide durable solutions to humanitarian crises and emergencies in Nigeria.

    She also sought support for the presidential Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund, and she got the full commitment of the United Nations.
    The minister had accompanied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other members of the presidential cabinet to the UNGA meeting to brief him on the Sustainable Development Goal, SDG high-level meeting and the implications for Nigeria’s commitment to Achieve SDG by 2030.

    She used the occasion to hold a high-level discussion with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths on systematic and long-term responses to relieve Nigeria and its citizens affected by the impact of humanitarian crises.

    Furthermore, the minister joined the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu who she addressed Nigeria Governors Wives Forum, on the need for Nigerians in the diaspora to support the Renewed Hope Agenda, rebuild the economy, pull Nigerians out of poverty, and support the nation’s speedy development.

    The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, has called for collaboration with the Nigerian military in the management of humanitarian crises in the country.

    Edu made this request on Monday when she paid a visit on the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher G. Musa at the Defense Headquarters, in Abuja .

    Edu disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to preventing and mitigating humanitarian crises, hence the need to improve security and reduce poverty in the country.

    According to the Minister, Insecurity increases humanitarian crises and poverty, adding that there is a need for collaboration between her Ministry and the Military to prevent, mitigate, and reintegrate those affected back into the society.

    She also called for military support for humanitarian workers who provide services to individuals affected by the humanitarian crisis and to protect displaced individuals and refugees across the country.

    Meanwhile, Edu disclosed the inclusion of military people in the social welfare system.

    She said, “We also want to expand our social register and social database to accommodate military persons that are either affected by war and injured or even killed, leaving their families behind.”

    “We require these data from the military to capture them under the social register, so they can benefit from poverty alleviation programmes which touch millions of lives.

    The President’s target is to see that Nigerians are brought out of humanitarian crises and poverty in Nigeria, ” she said.

    The Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher G. Musa, said there is always a link between poverty and crime, and the military believes that once the Ministry succeeds, it makes their job easier and better.

    “We assure the Minister of all the support she needs, wherever they want to go, and whatever the logistics that need to be done, we are going to provide that.”

    ” We are also happy that the barrack community will also be considered, which is critical. The troops’ morale will be high knowing that in case of any emergency, their families will also be considered in the poverty alleviation programs.”

    Farouq calls for Improved Service Delivery to Tackle Humanitarian Crisis

    Minister of Humanitarian , Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has called for improved service delivery by the ministry as a way of tackling humanitarian crisis in the country.

    Farouq made this call in Abuja at the NAF Center while declaring open a two-day Management Retreat for staff and agencies of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

    In her keynote address, the ministry noted that it is imperative for the ministry to strengthen it’s organizational structure for improved service delivery, adding that natural disasters and man-made crises across the country have adversely impacted the lives and the well-being of many Nigerians and must be tackled.

    “This exercise is the assembly of the Management Staff of the humanitarian sector designed to brainstorm on ways of improving the actualization of the mandate of the Ministry. It is also a period of stock taking and winding down to under-study the level of implementation and impact of the various programmes of the Ministry including the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs).

    “I commend the leadership of our various Agencies, Departments and Units which have worked tirelessly to ensure that the poor and vulnerable members of the society are given sustainable sense of belonging in the Country.”
    The minister charged the participants to come up with a roadmap on strengthening the organizational structure and service delivery compact of the Ministry.

    Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr Nasir Sani- Gwarzo, explained that the in-house event is designed to assess the achievements, shortfalls and challenges of the ministry since its inception.
    According to him, the gathering is to brainstorm and to examine existing gaps and proffer solutions for effective in and efficient service delivery in line with the Ministry’s mandate.

    The Director of Planning , Research and Statistics of the Ministry Mr Ralph Oraeluno said that the objective was to enable participants to assess the strides taken so far by the ministry.

    “We are expected to find solutions to the problems that may be presented here by Departments, Agencies and Units that tend to militate against their productivity.
    “It is also a period of winding down so as to gather more strength for the great task ahead of the Ministry in managing humanitarian issues in Nigeria, Oraelumo noted.

    Daybreak reports that the theme of the retreat was, ‘Strengthening Social Inclusion For Improved Living Standard of Nigerians’.
