HURIWA Condemns Governor Ganduje over Destruction of N200 Million Beer Products

The Prominent Civil Rights Advocacy group HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has lambasted the Kano state Governor Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje for permitting the destruction of Beer products worth N200 million in Kano in the guise of implementation of Shariah law in Kano State.

The Rights group said the consistent flouting of section 10 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 as amended which prohibits absolutely the recognition of a particular religion as State Religion and Section 42 of the same Constitution which absolutely prohibits discrimination on the basis of Religion and Ethnicity in the implementation of public policies by elected government as clearly manifest in the UNREPENTANT application of religious laws that offends the Grund Norm of Nigeria will spell doom for a United Nigeria.

Asking that the Nigerian National Assembly and rational minded and right thinking Citizens to intervene and arrest the continuous drift of Kano state government towards establishment of an Islamic State within Nigeria, the Rights group said the President Muhammadu Buhari has also manifested his partiality for his Religion and Ethnicity in such massive dimensions that he has rubbished Section 14(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 as amended on the imperative essence of enforcement of the Principle of Federal Character in appointments because the President has the proclivity of appointing only Hausa/Fulani/Kanuri Northern Moslems in strategic military and internal security Architectures of Nigeria.  HURIWA said the total disregard of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by Governor Abdullahi GANDUJE, the ‘Man Friday’ of President Muhammadu Buhari shows that their is indeed a grand conspiracy to Islamise Nigeria.

“We absolutely condemn as despicable,  provocative,  vexatious and primitive, the destruction of the alcoholic beverages by the Kano state governor in the name of his personal Religion even against the clear provisions of Sections 10 and 42 of the Nigerian Constitution just as the rapid ISLAMISATOON of Kano state is totally unacceptable going by the fact that within Kano state there are indigenous non Moslems living and doing their legitimate businesses in that part of Nigeria reputed to be one of the biggest commercial centres of Nigeria. Besides, Kano state government shares from the internally generated revenues harnessed by the Federal Inland revenue services which goes into the Federation Accounts and Beer manufacturing industry pay a lot of taxes into the central Treasury of government from where Kano state draws her Monthly allocations. Why destroy these economic derivatives from whose source some of the Monthly allocations Kano collects emanate? This is hypocrisy and this is offensive to all good thinking and against the Nigerian Constitution “.

HURIWA recalled that the the Kano State Hisbah Board had reportedly destroyed 1, 970, 000 bottles of beer worth N200 million confiscated within Kano metropolis.

The Prominent Civil Rights Advocacy group HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) stated that during the destruction exercise at Kalebawa in Dawakin Tofa Local Government, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje said that consumption of alcohol and all other intoxicants that can distort the mental capability of a person is forbidden in Islam just as he stated thus: “Even in Kano, we have banned the consumption of beer in all parts of the state,” Ganduje said.

HURIWA recalled that the governor was represented by his deputy, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, just as he said the Hisbah Board was established with the aim of preventing evil social acts in society. He explained that as part of his administration’s effort of enhancing the welfare of the Hisbah, before this the year 2020 runs out, there would be a salary increase and new uniform for them.

HURIWA  quoted the Kano state governor as stating as follows: “My administration is proud of the way you discharge your duties, therefore, I wish to urge all stakeholders to continue to give you all the support you need to succeed,” he said.

Relatedly, in his remarks, the Commander General, Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Haruna Muhammad Ibn Sina, said that the beer confiscated is worth over N200 million.

HURIWA has warned that if the President Muhammadu Buhari continues to encourage the abuses of the Nigerian Constitution then before long other States dominated by Christians may promulgate Christian doctrines and Canon laws as applicable in their State which inevitably would have resulted from the tacit approval of Shariah laws that President Muhammadu Buhari has permitted in Kano State just as the Rights Advocacy group HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) said if action is not adopted quickly, the illegality in Kano state would lead to the destabilization of Nigeria.

Petrol Hike: Time to protests against Buhari govt – HURIWA tells Nigerians

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has described as reprehensible the policy of hiking the rates of electricity supply and pump price of premium motor spirit simultaneously at a time that most Nigerians have lost their means of livelihood due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The rights group said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has ended up inflicting pains, penury and agony on a massive scale on Nigerians through the recent rash of anti-people actions and policy implementation.

HURIWA, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday, said it was foolhardy for government to hike the purchasing prices of commodities when other nations of the World including even capitalist nation’s like the USA and UK are implementing different types of relief packages and funding aides to businesses in the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

HURIWA, therefore, called for protests by Nigerians to reject the alleged enslaving policies of the government.

The group says civil protests are necessary because all other organised trade unions and notable Civil Rights bodies may have been bribed to shut up or cajoled with threats of the Company and Allied Matters Act or may have skeletons in their pockets.

“Best bet is for Nigerians not to suffer and smile but to protest against these burdens imposed on the suffering and oppressed masses by the government which has transformed from a government that should govern to the new slave drivers,” the statement added.

“The oppressed masses should know that it is better to protest at the risks of arrest by the security forces than to be afraid, keep quiet and die in silence. Any government that has failed to provide funding assistance in this perilous period of health emergency but has instead chosen to overtax the people, has lost its legitimacy to govern.”

DAILY POST reported yesterday that the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), announced an increment in the pump price of petrol

  • ‘Your Ministers are destroying Nigeria’s economy’ – HURIWA tells Buhari

‘Your Ministers are destroying Nigeria’s economy’ – HURIWA tells Buhari

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has accused President Muhammadu Buhari Ministers of destroying the country’s economy.

The rights group in a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko tasked Buhari on the importance of deploying the best ideas to revive what is left of the economy.

”In the first four years, under the watch of President Buhari, Nigeria overtook India as the country with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty. About 87 million Nigerians, or half the population, live on less than US$1.90 per day.

”Economic growth has been lackluster since his election in 2015 and has continued since his re-election in 2019. The country went into recession in 2016, with a negative 1.6% growth rate. There was a rebound in economic growth of about 2% in 2018. Still the IMF forecasts that growth will remain anemic at an annual average of about 1.9% from 2019 – 2023.

The group further stated that the recent accusations against the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; Ibrahim Magu, and the alleged scale of corruption issues with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) under the supervision of the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs; Godswill Akpabio are testaments of how the devastated effect of continuous corrupt practices in Nigeria has gone so bad.

It queried if the Buhari was foot-dragging the necessity of rescuing the waning anti-corruption war if indeed the government is not just playing hide and seek with Nigerians noting that the Buhari-led administration has not shown patriotism in the war against corruption especially in the economic sector.

”The economy cannot grow fast without zero tolerance to corruption. We recommend that the activities or programmes of the anti-graft agency; the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) should be reorganized and strengthened without much ado by appointing competent professional outside of the Nigerian Police to lead that law based fight against economic crimes which are destroying the local economy and exposing Nigeria to global disrepute.

”The current economic policies marred by scale of corruptions are not delivering desirable outcomes and this is why the administration of President Buhari has to fashion out more robust and effective fiscal and monetary strategies to save the day. ”

HURIWA urged Buhari to task Ministers especially the Finance, Power, Humanitarian Affairs and such vital revenue-generating agencies such as the NNPC, the Federal Inland Revenue Services, The Nigerian Customs Services, Nigerian Immigration Services, NIS, the Nigerian Ports Authority to be transparent and accountable because there are too many leakages and corruption going.

It also called on Buhari to stop the mass hunger, mass joblessness, insecurity and instability that are tearing Nigeria apart.

”Mr. President must stop his cabinet level appointees from working at cross purposes and committing outrageous economic crimes against the Nigerian people and above all.

”Mr. President should stop mortgaging Nigeria into servitude through dubious debts from China which plans to take over Africa by hook or crook. President Buhari must search for ‘a black goat now that it is still daylight and make hay whilst the sun shines.”
