Professor Oloyede says the board also plans to register at least 50,000 candidates per day.

In a statement issued earlier in the year, the examination body announced that the “UTME/DE registration starts 12th February 2022 and ends 19th March 2022. Mock examination holds on 20th April 2022. UTME holds from 20th to 30th April 2022”.

JAMB makes a U-turn, postpones UTME registration to Feb 19

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has rescheduled registration for the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry for February 19 till March 26, 2022.

The decision came barely 24 hours after the board confirmed that it would not reschedule its registration process following the suspension of the verification portal of the National Identity Number due to hitches.

The board, in a statement on Tuesday, claimed that the postponement for the exercise which was initially scheduled to commence on February 12 was due to “fine-tuning”.

The statement by the board’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, partly read, “The process, which will be concluded within the one-week extension period, is also aimed at accommodating feedback from candidates and other stakeholders alike.”

“Further to the above, the new and improved procedures for the 2022 UTME Registration would be made available on the Board’s website, its weekly bulletin as well as other media outlets on Monday, 14th February, 2022.

“The candidates, are by this notice, urged to follow keenly the procedures for registration as would be announced by the Board,” the statement added.

Reports that JAMB insisted that prospective candidates would have no choice but to register with their respective NIN for the 2022 examinations despite the challenges reported in 2021.

  • JAMB to Introduce Self-Service Registration Outlets in Abuja, Lagos

JAMB to Introduce Self-Service Registration Outlets in Abuja, Lagos

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, says it plans to introduce self-service registration outlets in Abuja and Lagos to leverage the digital competence of its computer-savvy candidates.

JAMB disclosed this in its Weekly Bulletin from the Office of the Registrar, on Monday in Abuja.

It said that the system is expected to reduce crowds at its accredited Computer-Based Tests Centres in both cities.

The idea, the board explained, is to advance the digital competence of candidates who can do the registration on their own.

It added that it is also to expand the registration access points, in line with the extant federal government’s COVID-19 protocols.

The board expressed confidence that the service provider, Bankfort, had assured of immense potential of the seamless registration mode.

Similarly, JAMB also stated that it is set to incur not less than N50 million as added commission to its financial vendors.

This followed the introduction of its cashless regime in its 2022 registration exercise.

The bulletin quoted the Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, as saying that the additional financial burden was the price the board is prepared to pay.

This, Oloyede stated, followed the board’s concern to the plight of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, and Direct Entry candidates in the hands of shylock CBT centre owners.

He said: “The measure would put a stop to other sharp practices that usually follow the payment of direct service charges for registration at these centres.”

He also added that candidates are expected to purchase an e-PIN for N3,500 as subsidized by the federal government, N500 compulsory reading text and a N700 regulated charge for CBT centres.

“All the purchases cost N4,700 as candidates are expected to now pay the regulated N700 charge for CBT centres along with the cost for e-PIN.

“The board would later transmit all accrued entitlements to respective CBT centres on a weekly basis or any timeframe agreeable to respective centres, to curtail all noticeable infractions.”

Oloyede also stated that, while the board now spearheads the collection of the N700 service charge on behalf of the centres, it would be taking on additional responsibility of N25 commission.

He said that the N25 commission amounted to over N50 million in 2021.

Oloyede, however, urged all financial institutions to be involved in the UTME/DE registration to live up to expectations.

According to him, the vendors would be held responsible for any act of misdemeanour or infraction committed by their agents.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, on Monday, stated that pre-examination activities, including registration for the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination would start late due to issue arising from the National Identification Number

Though the board also defended its decision to enforce the National Identity Number requirement in the registration process.

The spokesman for the board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the clarifications in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja.

“Most of the board’s pre-examination activities, including the 2022 UTME registration, are starting late owing to some circumstances beyond our control. We are, however, ready to do all that is necessary not only to meet up with the schedule, but also to make the 2022 UTME registration and examination the best so far,” he said.

The board stated in its weekly bulletin published on Monday that its decision to implement the NIN was a game-changer in the fight against impersonation.

enjamin said, “The introduction of the NIN in UTME registration in 2021 by the board was a game-changer in the fight against impersonation and other examination infractions. It is to be noted that the decision to adopt the NIN was a very difficult one given the various challenges and opposition from many quarters to the policy.

“However, the board, seeing the many benefits associated with the deployment of the NIN, took the unpopular but beneficial decision, knowing that any departure from the norm would, more often than not, be met with initial opposition and rejection, and was, therefore, understandably undeterred in its chosen course of action.”

  • JAMB To Clear Backlog Of 706,189 Illegal Admissions – Registrar

JAMB To Clear Backlog Of 706,189 Illegal Admissions – Registrar

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it would soon begin to clear the backlog of illegal admissions conducted by tertiary education institutions in the country.

JAMB had recently uncovered 706,189 illegal admissions by universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other related institutions.

Speaking after receiving the Education Correspondents Association of Nigeria (ECAN’s) Award of Excellence on Friday in Abuja on Sunday, JAMB’s Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, said the move is to rescue students who have the requisite qualifications but were admitted illegally.

“On the issue of illegal admission that we want to put a halt to, we want to clear the backlog and ensure that those of them who have been improperly admitted but have the minimum qualification are rescued.

“We want to continue the campaign to discourage those who are committing such illegal action to stop doing such,” Oloyede added.

The JAMB boss expressed deep appreciation to ECAN for considering him worthy of the award.

He said: “We appreciate the gesture and I want to assure you that you have not done this in vain. The objective of presenting this award will be attained. The purpose is to be able to encourage us to do more of what has been assigned to us by the Federal Government. I assure you, we will deliver on the mandate.”

On the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Oloyede said the Board has decided to adopt a cashless system in the registration process, adding that JAMB would also prohibit Computer Based Test (CBT) centres from selling e-PINs to guard against extortion of candidates.

“On our campaign on cashless CBT centres particularly during our registration exercise. It is known that many CBT centres, despite the supervision, still manage to exploit candidates.

“We want to put a stop to that, we have intensified monitoring but part of what we are doing is to ensure we protect the students against this extortion, and that is why we are asking all those (the candidates pay through us) and we will pay the centres (their service charge). with this, anybody who collects money from the centre would have been seen to have done a wrong thing because you are not supposed to collect any money you…

“We are also going to ensure that ePIN is not something that they will be selling at the (CBT) centres. We will ensure that anybody who wants to sell ePIN will not be a CBT centre, once you are a CBT centre you have lost the right to sell ePIN so that we can hold the ePIN sellers responsible for what they do.

Once you are a CBT centre you cannot also say you want to sell ePIN.”

Commending the media for its role as a representative of the people and in promotion of good governance, Oloyede called for support in the various campaigns embarked upon by the Board to ensure a better admission system.

“We appeal for support (on the issue) of fake certificates. Issuance and usage of fake certificates to secure admission into our institutions particularly at the A level candidates.

“We are working very hard to tighten the noose and make it impossible for those who engage in such an illicit action to succeed.

“The next issue is the campaign we have just introduced; Physical and Health Education and Computer Studies as UTME subjects. We are asking and sensitizing the public, particularly the students who are to take the exam, that these are two Science subjects that will be added to their choice to widen opportunities for candidates to be able to access tertiary education,” he said.

Earlier, the chairman of ECAN, Chuks Ukwuatu, said the Award of Excellence, which comes every five years, was bestowed on Oloyede for his achievements in JAMB.

While saying it was initiated to encourage performance, the ECAN chairman said Oloyede was singled out for the award for promoting transparency, sanitising the nation’s admission system, weekly publication of financial transactions of the Board, among others.

“The award was initiated to encourage performance because we know if we get it right in education, we will also get it right in all spheres of the economy,” he said.
