JAMB Introduces Two New Science Subjects To UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has introduced two new science subjects of Physical and Health Education and Computer Studies as Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) subjects.

Registrar of the JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, stated this at the weekend after receiving an award of Excellence from journalists in Abuja.

Oloyede said: “We are asking and sensitizing the public, particularly the students who are to take the exam, that these are two Science subjects that will be added to their choice to widen opportunities for candidates to be able to access tertiary education.”

The Registrar also noted that the board would soon clear the backlog of illegal admissions conducted by tertiary institutions in the country.

He said the move is to ensure that students who have been improperly admitted but have the minimum qualification are rescued.

JAMB had recently uncovered 706,189 illegal admissions by universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other related institutions.

“We want to continue the campaign to discourage those who are committing such illegal action to stop doing such,” Oloyede said.

While noting that a cashless system is adopted for registration of the 2022 UTME, Oloyede said JAMB would also prohibit Computer Based Test (CBT) centres from selling e-PINs to guard against extortion of candidates.

“It is known that many CBT centres, despite the supervision, still manage to exploit candidates.

“We want to put a stop to that, we have intensified monitoring but part of what we are doing is to ensure we protect the students against this extortion,” he said.

“We will ensure that anybody who wants to sell ePIN will not be a CBT centre. Once you are a CBT centre, you have lost the right to sell ePIN so that we can hold the ePIN sellers responsible for what they do,” he said.

The JAMB boss expressed deep appreciation to the group for considering him worthy of the Award.

JAMB Cancels UTME Cut-Off Marks, Adopts New System

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cancelled general cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions.

It has, therefore, given the institutions freedom to set their individual minimum benchmark for admission.

The Board took the decision at the 2021 policy meeting on Tuesday.

The virtual meeting was chaired by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, while disclosing the decision of the stakeholders, said the University of Maiduguri proposed 150, Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto proposed 140, Pan Atlantic University proposed 210, University of Lagos, 200; Lagos State University, 190; Covenant University, 190 and Bayero University Kano wanted 180 as its cut off mark.

The stakeholders also approved October 29, 2021, as the deadline for the closure of amendments for 2021 admissions.

On the deadline for the closure of admissions, the stakeholders resolved to allow the ministry decide as they could not agree on the December 31, 2021, deadline for all public institutions and January 31st 2022 for all private institutions.

Stakeholders also adopted the 2021 admission guidelines, which provide that all applications for part-time or full-time programmes for degrees, NCE, OND, and others must be posted only through JAMB.

Speaking on the stakeholders’ decision on other admission criteria, Prof Oloyede said the candidate’s credentials must be uploaded on Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) and recommended by the institution while JAMB approves and the candidate accepts the offer of admission.

He said when candidates have not accepted an offer, the institution can change the candidate after informing JAMB.

Also approved at the meeting were the guidelines that every institution is at liberty to admit candidates based on its own minimum score approved by the institution and the policy meeting.

The meeting also resolved that every institution should maintain its own minimum score as approved by the policy meeting.

According to the stakeholders, the 2021 admissions will be conducted only through CAPS, no institution is allowed to admit candidates without uploading their details on CAPS.

Oloyede further disclosed that for the 2021/2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, the board is introducing two new subjects: computer studies and physical and health education, bringing to a total of 25 subjects.

The stakeholders also exempted prison inmates, visually impaired and foreign candidates from sitting for post UTME exercise.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Arch Sonny Echono, said: “It is saddening that despite the clear directives at previous policy meetings some institutions still illegally admitted candidates outside CAPS.

“I consider such an act as a direct affront on the system and appropriate sanctions shall be applied on those found to have been in such a disruptive act.”

He maintained that any institution that issues admission letters to candidates outside CAPS will be punished for such gross indiscipline and fraud.

BREAKING: Senate considers limiting age of UTME candidates

The Senate Committee on Basic Education has said it will pursue the amendment of the law establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, to enable it limit the age of candidates writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, to 16 years and above.

Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Akon Eyakenyi gave the indication during the committee’s oversight visit to JAMB.

According to him, the committee had identified two major areas to be addressed in the proposed amendment for the exam body to function better.

Eyakenyi said “Our own work is that of making laws, to legislate; we have identified two major areas that we need to go into the process of amending the act establishing JAMB. That’s the area of support we will give.

“Other than that, we also intend to pass on what we have seen today to the appropriate MDAs, the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure the support that JAMB needs is given to them.”

NYSC threatens sanctions as JAMB alleges fake mobilisation certificate

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on Tuesday raised concerns about tertiary institutions awarding fake certificates to persons who did not deserve them.

The organisation also accused some of the institutions of conniving with some persons to destroy the education sector.

The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, stated these at the 2021 Batch B pre-mobilisation workshop organised by the National Youth Service Corps with the theme, ‘Sustainable Mobilisation Process: The role of stakeholders,’ and attended by representatives of tertiary institutions.

At the event, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, said the management would apply sanctions on erring institutions and officials who attempted to compromise the mobilisation process.

On his part, Oloyede, said, “There are many ways that corps members and their collaborators take towards corrupting the system. The more you stay long in this system, the more shocked you are likely to become.

“Many institutions still engage in mobilising or awarding certificates to people who didn’t attend their institutions. You are in a position to know because you run the Interim Joint Matriculation Board and others. How many of these students are actually your students? Go on the streets of Nigeria, you will see IJMB coaching. These candidates are not supposed to be attending roadside coaching. They are supposed to be in your institution.

“Even yesterday (Monday), I got some information that I became dumbfounded, almost losing hope that there is nothing we can do. One gentleman came to me. He said, ‘all this authentication that you are doing, you are just speaking English. People who are making cool money are making it and they are destroying the education system.’ I asked him to give me an example. And he told me that there is what they call Familiar Name, that all you need to do is to walk to a corrupt officer in any of our examination bodies and when you go there, you say a familiar name.

“If your name is John Bello, they will tell them (exam officer) and they will look for a John Bello who has written their examination before and simply give a copy of the certificate to you and you will take it, and when you write to that examination body giving that photocopy, they will take it and say it is authentic. Whereas it is in the wrong man’s hand.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, represented at the workshop by the Secretary, Development Secretariat, Dr Kelvin Ogbonna, pledged support for the NYSC in its efforts towards preventing unqualified graduates into the mobilisation process.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of candidates who sat in more than 720 CBT centres for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted between June 19 and June 22.

Dr Fabian Benjamin, JAMB Spokesperson made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.

Benjamin advised each concerned candidate to check his/her result by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 through the GSM number used by each candidate to obtain profile code and UTME registration with the board.

He said that their results would be relayed to them immediately after following the instructions given to check results.

He added that the results for subsequent days would however be released daily.

“ The Board notes with satisfaction that the utilisation of NIN (National Identification Number) has helped in curbing examination malpractices as the 2021 UTME has recorded the least incidence of irregularities since the inception of the CBT examinations.

“ Nevertheless, the Board would still review all the CCTV footages and other technical gadgets for detection of possible examination misconducts.

“Extremely comparatively few results are being withheld for further investigation,” he said.

He, therefore, said that the Board would not hesitate to withdraw the results of any candidate subsequently found to have committed any form of examination misconduct.

JAMB Delists Six Additional CBT Centres

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has delisted additional six Computer Based Centres (CBT) over poor performance on the second day of the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The board’s Head, Protocol and Public Affairs, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in a statement issued yesterday to journalists in Abuja.

The board had earlier delisted 25 CBT centres across the country over poor performance at the commencement of the 2021 UTME examinations on Saturday.

Benjamin said candidates who were unable to register during the allowable time for registration despite the extension were graciously directed to visit designated centres to be registered.

He said these categories of candidates that had been scheduled for the 2021 UTME were directed to print their examination notification slip for their schedule for the examination from June 21.

He, however, directed the candidates to print their notification slip from the JAMB’s website

He further said that 464,834 candidates across the country wrote the UTME on June 21, the second day of the examination.

  • JAMB Extends 2021 UTME Registration By Two Weeks

JAMB Extends 2021 UTME Registration By Two Weeks

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended registration for its annual Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination by two weeks.

The UTME is also now expected to hold from June 19 to July 3.

It was initially to hold between June 5 and 19.

The UTME is a computer-based standardised examination for prospective undergraduates in Nigeria.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, had raised the possibility of the extension earlier on Friday during a virtual meeting with UTME committee members.

He cited, for the extension, the inability of at least 600,000 candidates to register for the examination despite indicating interest.

About 1.1 million candidates have already registered for the examination, according to JAMB.

“There is a need to give everyone the opportunity,” Professor Oloyede said on Friday.

The examination body had mandated candidates to have a National Identification Number (NIN) to be able to register for the examination.

Critics have described the NIN requirement as an unnecessary additional burden.

Registration for the NIN has been a nightmare for many Nigerians after the Federal Government mandated its use for access to telecommunication services.

In a press conference on Saturday, Prof Oloyede said JAMB expects that the two-week extension will provide more candidates an opportunity to register for the examination.

The decision to extend, he said, was the outcome of a two-day stakeholders’ meeting of the body’s board in Abuja.

  • BREAKING: JAMB may Extend 2021 UTME Registration – Prof. Is’aq Oloyede

BREAKING: JAMB may Extend 2021 UTME Registration – Prof. Is’aq Oloyede

The registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board, Prof. Is’aq Oloyede, has said that the board will decide if there is a need to extend the registration period and change the date of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Oloyede made this known today, at a zoom meeting titled, ‘Briefing session for the committees on 2021 UTME’.

The UTME had been slated to hold between June 5 and 19.

Oloyede, however, stated that the Mock examination would begin on May 20 as stipulated earlier.

The registrar explained that “Presently, we have 1.2million candidates that have registered but we expect 1.9million. 600,000 candidates had made attempt to register but because of NIN they could not. We want to do an appraisal of all the issues to know if we are extending registration or not.

“Extending registration may not be the solution if we found out that we can give 80 per cent of those who have made attempt another password, then there will be no need to extend registration.

“We have to determine where the problem is coming before we can say we are extending. After today, we will address the press tomorrow on the outcome of the meeting on the main examination date and registration. We want to assess what is happening.”

The zoom meeting had in attendance stakeholders who all stated their challenges while some others appreciated the innovations and transparency which Oloyede brought to the fore in the yearly conduct of UTME.
