Kaduna Residents Raise Security Concerns Over Influx of Motorcycle Riders

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Residents in parts of Kaduna have expressed concerns over an increasing number of unfamiliar commercial motorcycle riders operating in some communities, amid fears about security in the metropolis.

Some residents alleged that large groups of motorcycle riders were gathering around the Sabon Tasha abattoir area at night, while others raised concerns about the presence of unfamiliar riders in Karji and along Yakowa Road.

However, Vice Chairman of the Sabon Tasha Butchers Union, Yusuf Lawal Suleiman, denied claims that suspected criminals were using the abattoir as a hideout. Speaking during a visit to the area, Suleiman said the abattoir closes daily by 8 p.m. and that the premises are secured at night.

He stated that commercial motorcycle riders only visit the location temporarily during the day to rest, eat or wash their motorcycles, adding that no riders are permitted to stay overnight within the facility. Leaders of a commercial motorcycle riders’ union in Ungwan Pama also acknowledged an increase in the number of unfamiliar riders operating in the area.

The union’s chairman, Ibrahim Auta, and secretary, Gideon K. Baba, said many of the riders were not registered members of the association and were often seen sleeping outdoors near bus stops and shops.

Some residents and business owners also expressed concern about riders who appeared unfamiliar with nearby streets and communities. The Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official response to the claims at the time of filing this report.
