Parties like Labour Party will labour till they die – Tinubu

Ahead of the governorship election in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday lashed out at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Labour Party, LP, in the state.

Tinubu said the PDP and Labour Party will labour till death.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had scheduled the Osun State governorship election to hold on July 16.

Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola is seeking to return to power for his second term, while Ademola Adeleke of the PDP is the front runner for the gubernatorial race.

LP has Lasun Yusuf as its governorship candidate.

However, Tinubu dismissed the possibility of PDP and LP giving the APC a stiff contest.

Speaking at the party’s mega rally, he described PDP and LP as “mushroom parties”.

He urged residents of Osun State to consider their future and vote for APC.

According to Tinubu: “I ask you to please do the same thing you did in Ekiti. Come out with your PVCs and vote massively for APC.

“The voting is now in your hand. Be very vigilant. Be watchful. You will not do it in vain.

“Think about your children and vote accordingly so you can see the future. Come out en masse. Don’t mind PDP and other mushroom parties — parties like Labour; they will labour till they die. God will not make you labourers.”

SDP, Labour Party Form Alliance In Benue

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has entered into an alliance with the Labour Party (LP) in Benue State with an intent to support the latter in the coming general election.

State Chairman of the SDP, Engr John Enemari announced at a press conference on Monday that his entire executive has thrown their weight behind the Labour Party in Benue State ahead of the 2023 polls.

Enemari also directed chairmen of his party including executives at the 276 electoral wards of the 23 local government areas in the state to support the LP for good governance in order to revamp the socio-economic fortunes of the citizenry.

“The man, Herman Hembe, that is coming is a young man that has done very well in his constituency. This is his fourth time in the National Assembly. My people are calling me, chairman, where do you want us to go, I said look, wait, I met with him and we spoke, so my people we are going to work with him,” he said.

The SDP chairman added that the crisis at the national level of the party has destabilised everything in all the states of the federation, adding that the crisis created factions and they cannot continue to suffer for them at the national office particularly Benue SDP as they did in 2018/2019.

“In a party if you don’t win an election, what do you do? Now they are in court, let them continue, Benue is not a revenue-yielding state for them. Benue now needs good governance we cannot remain idle, we must work with those with integrity to deliver the state.

“I consulted with all other parties the APC, and PDP but that didn’t work, as one was trailed with legal issues and the other with integrity issues. Since we did not have a governorship candidate we have decided to give our full support and ensure LP wins in Benue state and salvage the state from the infrastructural deficit and failed promises,” he said.

On his part, Dr Jude Nyor, a Senior Legislative Aide to the LP governorship candidate in Benue, Herman Hembe, applauded the development, noting that SDP is a good party that understands where the country is moving to.

Nyor expressed joy as he called on others to join LP because it is the party to beat in 2023 and they would take Benue out of the woods by rebuilding and making it great again.

BREAKING: Peter Obi Finally Unveils Datti Baba-Ahmed as Running Mate

The Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has unveiled his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.

Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the founder of Baze University, Abuja, was announced as the LP vice-presidential candidate in Abuja on Friday.

The 46-year-old was a former lawmaker who represented Kaduna North Senatorial district.

Baba-Ahmed’s announcement was coming barely 24 hours after the Director-General, Peter Obi Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, announced his withdrawal as the vice-presidential candidate of the party.

Okupe who announced his withdrawal via his verified Twitter handle @doyinokupe noted that his party would announce the new running mate to the presidential candidate.

Doyin Okupe Resigns As Labour Party VP Candidate

A former presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, has submitted a withdrawal letter from the position of the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Mr Okupe made the announcement on Twitter.

“This afternoon I submitted my withdrawal letter from the position of the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party to INEC,” he said.

“A replacement will be announced by the national chairman of the party shortly.

“I feel greatly blessed to have been part of the foundation of success for the Labour Party.”

Okupe’s withdrawal will not come as a surprise to many. In announcing his emergence as a vice presidential candidate of the party last month, Okupe had made it clear that he was only “standing in” for the actual candidate.

The party had submitted Mr Okupe’s name to beat the Independent National Electoral Commission’s deadline for the submission of the name of a vice presidential candidate.

“Choosing the vice presidential candidate is an electoral process and it does not stop until the process and schedule ends,” Mr Okupe said at the time.

“INEC allows you to present a candidate and later on, if you want to substitute, you may do so, if necessary.”

  • INEC Lists Conditions For Political Parties To Substitute VP’s

INEC Lists Conditions For Political Parties To Substitute VP’s

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday listed the conditions for political parties to substitute candidates whose names have been forwarded to the commission.

For the electoral umpire, the law does not give any political party the right to replace a validly nominated candidate as it is the prerogative of the individual to be substituted.

This comes amid reports that some political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party, nominated their vice-presidential candidates as placeholders, pending the conclusion of talks for a substantive candidate to be picked.

While the former forwarded the name of Ibrahim Kabiru Masari as its vice-presidential candidate, the latter had nominated Doyin Okupe for the same position.

Reacting to the development, INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye, said the electoral body would take a decision in accordance with the Electoral Act.

“As far as the law is concerned and as far as the commission is concerned, the commission makes it mandatory that the moment a presidential candidate emerges, such a presidential candidate must nominate an associate who shall run with him/her as a vice-presidential candidate,” he said on Friday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. “And so, both are seen as Siamese twins; they move together, and they fall together.

“In the forms submitted by the various political parties, they submitted forms relating to their presidential candidates and they also submitted forms relating to their vice-presidential presidential candidates, and that is in compliance with the provisions of the constitution and in compliance with the provisions of the law.”

Okoye explained further, “There is a provision in the Electoral Act for withdrawal of candidates validly nominated and the law provides that a political party cannot substitute a candidate that has been validly nominated except in two instances; if the nominated candidate dies or if the nominated candidate withdraws from the race.

“And in terms of withdrawal, the nominated candidate shall – in his own writing – write a letter to the political party that nominated him, indicating that he has withdrawn from the race and that must also be accompanied by an affidavit duly sworn to by the said candidate.

“Then the political party that nominated the candidate will now forward same to the Independent National Electoral Commission saying that our presidential candidate has withdrawn, or our vice-presidential candidate has withdrawn, and these are the documents of withdrawal and this is the person we are using to replace.

“But as of today, the political parties nominated their presidential candidates and nominated their vice-presidential candidates, so the issue of withdrawal is at the absolute discretion of the duly nominated candidate and no one else.”

According to Okoye who is also INEC’s Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, the political parties submitted forms containing the names of their presidential and vice-presidential candidates, as well as their particulars and sworn affidavits.

He stressed that none of the political parties neither indicate that they were submitting the document or name of a candidate as a placeholder.

“All the political parties that submitted list and particulars of their candidates said they were submitting the list of their presidential candidates and vice-presidential candidates; the issue of submitting a name in lieu, or submitting a name as a placeholder did not even arise,” the INEC official stated.

  • 2023: Rivers PDP Supporters mull mass defection to APC, Labour Party

2023: Rivers PDP Supporters mull mass defection to APC, Labour Party

There are indications that the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, may lose its strongholds and voter base in Rivers State in the 2023 general elections.

The imminent upheaval is premised on the expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the just concluded PDP presidential primaries and the controversial selection of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as its vice-presidential candidate.

Consequently, many PDP stalwarts and supporters are reportedly demoralized and negotiating conditions for defection to either the All progressives Congress, APC, or Labour party.

Findings in Rivers State uncovered ongoing political horse-trading to occasion a radical collapse of the existing PDP structures into the APC or LP at the zero hours of the forthcoming general polls.

The plan to shift the PDP record of electoral fortunes in the state to the APC was hinted at by Chief Emeka Beke, the Rivers State APC chairman.

Beke disclosed this in an exclusive interview in PortHarcourt, Rivers State capital.

The APC chairman also averred that when the concerted plans would be coordinated and implemented, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and PDP 2023 Presidential candidate would even win the 25 percent baseline vote required by the extant electoral law.

When further grilled, Beke explained that the state APC leadership was working assiduously to ensure the former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC 2023 Presidential candidate wins in the whole states of the South-South geopolitical zone and, Rivers State in particular not minding that Tinubu defeated the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in the party’s presidential primaries.

Besides, discrete investigations uncovered that the parallel APC structures in the state are being harmonized as the disunited state leaders have decided to close ranks to work for the party’s success.

Reliable sources said the APC political foot soldiers have embarked on aggressive permanent voters card, PVC, and door-to-door campaigns across the upland and Riverine blocs of the state.

In collaboration, Beke said, “What we are doing now is that we are going around the wards, units and everywhere to campaign and make our people understand the importance of good governance in the state.

“If you want to win elections you need to mobilize your people. So, first, the people should go and get their PVCs. That is the most important thing.

“Then make them understand why they need to change from the present PDP government to the APC-led administration in the state come 2023 because Governor Nyesom Wike has failed Rivers people”.

  • Peter Obi Will Do Well As Minister Of Economy, – Ned Nwoko

Peter Obi Will Do Well As Minister Of Economy, – Ned Nwoko

Business magnate Ned Nwoko has stated that the presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party, Peter Obi lacks the structure required to lead the country

Speaking in a BBC interview on Tuesday, Mr Nwoko praised the former Anambra state governor’s demeanour in the business sphere

“Peter Obi is a good man and has impressed me. When he came to London he came alone. He’s a capitalist, a big-time player in the business world, and conservative in how he handles things, ‘ he said

“I will like him back in PDP, he will do well as Minister of Economy, and he will help us turn around Nigeria’s economy.

The former House of Representatives member also noted that certain factors in the Labour Party would hinder Obi from unseating the ruling the party

“Labour Party does not have the structure to win but they have a support base. He’s a popular candidate but cannot become president because he does not have the structure.

As a president, you must have the majority of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives and Senate.

“Many things in Nigeria will work against the emergence of a president under the Labour party, It wouldn’t happen.”

  • I Am Standing In As Peter Obi’s Running Mate – Doyin Okupe

I Am Standing In As Peter Obi’s Running Mate – Doyin Okupe

Former presidential spokesperson Dr Doyin Okupe on Friday said he is ‘standing in’ as vice presidential candidate of the Labour party.

He made the announcement on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

If his candidacy holds, he will run alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential elections.

However, Dr Okupe might be a placeholder to beat INEC’s deadline for the submission of the name of a vice presidential candidate.

    The deadline ends today.

“Choosing the vice presidential candidate is an electoral process and it does not stop until the process and schedule ends,” Dr Okupe said. “INEC allows you to present a candidate and later on, if you want to substitute, you may do so, if necessary. But if it’s not necessary, you may as well continue.

“So the present situation is that we believe that this Labour party government that is essentially going to be about young Nigerians. Those of us who have been part and parcel of our sordid past must be prepared to pay the sacrifice, even the personal sacrifice, of allowing a situation we can lift our youths to positions of power and authority.

“I am willing to put down my back, so that young people can stand and come to the top.”

  • Obi’s Trip to Egypt Will Benefit Nigeria Whether He Is President Or Not- Aide

Obi’s Trip to Egypt Will Benefit Nigeria Whether He Is President Or Not- Aide

Valentine Obienyem, the media adviser to Peter Obi, says the Labour Party presidential candidate’s trip to Egypt will benefit Nigerians.

He said this in a statement issued on Thursday, a few days after the former Anambra governor explained that he embarked on the trip to understudy the North African country’s power sector. The move generated heated debates among Nigerians with critics faulting the trip.

But Obienyem says “the knowledge he (Obi) has gained will be useful to Nigeria weather he becomes president or not”.

The media aide noted that while Obi respects the opinion of others, “they should also permit us to tell them that Obi actually travelled specifically for the reason he mentioned”.

He re-echoed the former governor’s reason for the trip, wondering why such a decision triggered criticisms.

“On Tuesday, the 14th of June, 2022, Mr. Peter Obi informed Nigerians via his Twitter handle of his trip to Egypt, to understudy by what miracle the third biggest economy in Africa after South Africa and Nigeria moved their power generation from 20,000 Megawatts to over 40,000 megawatts in four years,” the statement added.

“Ironically, Nigeria has remained fixated on 4,000 megawatts since Adam. Why would such a useful trip set tongues wagging? I read many comments on Mr. Peter Obi’s trip.”

“Any sedulous listener to Obi would have heard him say that learning and leadership are interwoven: a leader must be humble at all times to learn from the high and the low to the extent of studying or learning from existing templates or countries that have done correctly what one’s own is not able to do. This is the full essence of the Egyptian trip,” he added.

  • 2023 : Labour Party reveals region Peter Obi will pick running mate

2023 : Labour Party reveals region Peter Obi will pick running mate

The Labour Party (LP), on Monday, said that the party would not alter the principles of federal character in its choice of a vice presidential candidate.

Barr. Julius Abure, Labour Party Chairman, made this known while speaking in commemoration of Democracy Day.

Abure said the principle of social-religious inclusion and the diversity of the Nigerian workforce and membership of the Labour Party would not be compromised in its choice.

He added that although the decision lies with its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the party’s choice of a vice president will most likely come from the northern region.

“While I want to say that it may be too premature for me to speak, and the constitution also gives the presidential candidate the right to nominate his vice presidential candidate, I feel it would be more proper for the presidential candidate to answer.

“However, I want to assure you that as a party that is reasonable; as a party that believes in equity and justice; as a party that believes in social justice and equal opportunity for all, a vice-presidential candidate that is widely accepted, with powerful credentials, is most likely going to come from the Northern region, there is no doubt about that.”
