Nurse Seeking Employment Scammed of N650,000; 19 Suspects Apprehended

    By  Milcah  Tanimuu

A nurse in search of employment has fallen victim to fraudsters who swindled her of the sum of N650,000. The fraud syndicate, posing as recruitment officers, originally demanded N750,000 from Juliet, the nurse, while operating in the Igando area of Lagos State.

The Igando Division of the State Police Command, acting on intelligence, conducted a raid on the syndicate’s hideout, resulting in the arrest of 19 suspects at their operating base in the area.

Juliet, who hails from Enugu, explained her ordeal, saying, “I am a nurse and I came all the way from Enugu. My friend introduced me to the company. I have paid N650,000 out of the N750,000 they asked for.”

Upon arriving in Enugu, Juliet was accommodated in a room with eight other women who were also seeking employment. They were told that they would undergo training before securing the promised jobs.

Another eyewitness to the arrest, Taofeek Ibrahim, revealed that this group of individuals was targeting victims from other states and neighboring countries. The fraudsters lured them with promises of high-paying jobs in prominent companies like Shell in Lagos, offering a monthly salary of N300,000. Some victims, including one from Ghana, had already paid substantial amounts.

The nurse became suspicious when she observed that those who had promised them jobs appeared disheveled. The police later conducted a raid on the fraudsters’ hideout located at John Kay Crescent, Lanre Bus-stop, Igando.

While the State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached for comments, the Divisional Police Officer at Igando, Ekehinde Ehiomoba, confirmed the arrest, stating that “19 suspects were arrested.”

He said, “With the ability to travel 280km at full charge, taking into account our unique travel times in Lagos, our electric buses are a game-changer. With an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, there is no need to fear that the buses can stop while in transit.”

I am excited to announce the first set of electric buses in the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan as part of our increased effort to modernise every sector of Lagos. Thanks to our partnership with @Oando_PLC, Lagosians can expect a cleaner and greener public transportation system.… pic.twitter.com/4swo4R2fBS

“Our new electric buses will not only reduce carbon emissions but will also increase efficiency. This means that Lagosians can say goodbye to high fuel costs and hello to cost-efficient transportation.

“We shall be running a pilot scheme over the next few months to gather sufficient data required to analyse the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT buses to further improve our public transport service.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to creating a sustainable future for Lagos.

“We understand the need for charging stations to power our electric buses, which is why we are partnering with Oando Clean Energy Limited to strategically place Universal Chargers at public places like malls and gas stations. We also plan to establish an Assembly Plant for Electric Buses in the near future.

“This is just the beginning of our efforts to transform Lagos into an even smarter city as we continue to increase our fleet of electric vehicles, further modernizing the Lagos transportation system.”

  • Soldier stabs trader to death over N100 in Lagos

Soldier stabs trader to death over N100 in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified soldier has allegedly stabbed a ticket agent, Ibrahim Ikudaisi, aka Guardian, to death over N100 ticket in the Oshodi area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that Ikudaisi was visiting stores to demand N100 levy from different traders in a market in Oshodi when one of the traders refused to pay him.

The trader’s refusal to oblige to Ikudaisi’s request reportedly led to an argument and in the process, the soldier intervened to prevent the ticket agent from collecting the money from the trader.

It was learnt that the argument degenerated and in the process, the soldier brought out a knife and allegedly stabbed Ikudaisi in the chest.

An eyewitness, Adenike Ajayi, who spoke to our correspondent during a visit to the scene of the attack, said the impact of the attack made Ikudaisi fall to the ground, adding that the soldier took to his heels upon realising that the ticket agent had lost consciousness.

Ajayi said, “Ikudaisi is a popular person in this part of Oshodi. Everybody knows him and his nickname is ‘Guardian’. He is the one that collects daily ticket levies from all of us that are traders here.

“He was here yesterday (Tuesday) around 11am and we had all collected our daily tickets from him when he got into an argument with a lady who refused to pay for the ticket.

“As they were arguing, a soldier came and tried to force Ikudaisi to not let the lady pay for the daily N100 ticket. Suddenly, it got to a point that the soldier brought out his knife and stabbed Ikudaisi in the chest.”

Ajayi said the soldier fled to the Cantonment at Charity, where other soldiers came to his rescue, adding that Ikudaisi died due to the injuries he sustained during the attack.

“He was buried at his family compound in Lagos Island this morning. Army officers were around this place in the morning and they told us that they have arrested the soldier but we did not believe them because nobody was there to witness the arrest,” the trader said.

Another trader, Adeniji Olawole, told our correspondent that efforts by people in the market to apprehend the soldier proved abortive, adding that security agents were fond of perpetrating such injustice against the people in the market.

He said, “Though I was not around when the argument between Ikudaisi and the soldier started, I saw him after he was stabbed and lying in a pool of blood. Many people came out to help him while some others pursued the soldier when he ran away.

“Unfortunately, he was not caught because he ran into the cantonment and soldiers prevented those who ran after him from getting to him. In this Oshodi, police and army just beat and kill people for small matters that anger them. They should understand that we are also Nigerians like them. The death of Ikudaisi is a needless one. The soldier just wasted a precious life.”

An officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, told our correspondent that when Ikudaisi was stabbed, some of his friends rushed him to the hospital as he gasped for breath.

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said, “I am not aware of this situation; I will contact you as soon as any information concerning this matter is available to me.”

Reacting to the development, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Olabisi Ayeni, said the army was aware of the matter, adding that an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident had commenced.

He said, “I am aware of the incident. It was an attack by hoodlums on the soldier. Efforts are ongoing to further unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“However, hope you are aware that troops of the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army recently raided the Oshodi area where over 116 suspected hoodlums were arrested. Items recovered include locally-made pistols, local charms, Indian hemp and tramadol, amongst others.”

However, cases of civilians including policemen losing their lives to attacks by soldiers have become common in the state.

Sometime in August 2022, an Inspector serving with the Lagos State Police Command, Orukpe Monday, was reportedly tortured to death by soldiers in the Trade Fair area of the state.

Also, at Ogombo, in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state, a civilian was killed when a man, Richard Ekpo, engaged the services of soldiers to stop the burial of his late father sometime in November 2022.

Reacting, a lawyer, Todimu Ige, said it was the duty of soldiers to safeguard the territory of the country, adding that the reverse was the case in Nigeria.

He said, “The right to life is enshrined in the Nigerian constitution and it is only the court that has the right to terminate the life of an individual. A person (Ikudaisi) has been murdered and the police should investigate it and bring the culprit to face the law.

“The duty of the military is to safeguard the territorial integrity of the nation and there should not be any reason for a civilian to have anything to do with a soldier. But what we are seeing is the opposite in Nigeria.”

    Lagos Man Defiles 10-year-Old Daughter

Following the arrest of a lecturer over an allegation of having unlawful sexual intercourse with his biological daughter in Lagos State, the state Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has decried the rise in such cases in the state.

The Executive Secretary for the agency, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, in a statement, said the agency got to know about the development when the victim’s mother reported the case to officials of the agency.

The statement said, “The case was reported by the mother of the victim to the agency in January 2023. According to the information the DSVA gathered, the last abuse happened on December 30, 2022.

“During the court proceedings at Ogba, the mother of the victim allegedly said that her husband had stopped being intimate with her since 2018 and anytime she tried to address it, it always resulted in him physically assaulting her.

“The lecturer was arraigned before Magistrate B. V. Osunsanmi on February 3, 2023, at the Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court 1, Ogba, for allegedly defiling his 10-year-old biological daughter and was also alleged to have been having carnal knowledge of her since 2018.

“He was charged on two counts of defilement and sexual assault by penetrations which were contrary to and punishable under Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

Vivour-Adeniyi said the defendant’s plea was not taken, adding that the court ruled that the perpetrator be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, pending the Directorate of Public Prosecutions’ legal advice.

She also noted that the case was adjourned to March 6, 2023.

Vivour-Adeniyi, however, urged residents to continue to break the culture of silence by reporting cases of abuse, stressing that all forms of abuse were crimes against the state.

She said holistic support would be made available to survivors as perpetrators would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

  • INEC denies colluding with APC to manipulate PVC collection in Lagos

INEC denies colluding with APC to manipulate PVC collection in Lagos

Lagos office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked claim of colluding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to manipulate the collection of permanent voter cards (PVCs) in the state.

The claim was made by the Peoples Democratic Congress (PDP) on Monday, January 16, during a press conference.

Reacting to the claim, Olusegun Agbaje, INEC’s resident electoral commissioner in Lagos said it’s all “fabricated”.

    The statement read;

“It is pertinent to clarify and correct the frivolous accusation by PDP that some INEC staff are colluding with members of the ruling party in the state to deny some groups of people access to collect their PVCs.

“Mention was equally made of Mr Muyiwa Yusuf, the head of department VR/ICT INEC in the state who was alleged to have connived with the APC to clone the faces of voters through the privileged access he has to the PVCs.

“It has become necessary to comment on the recent report which far from being true, was a gross misrepresentation and diversionary both in content and context.

“It is obvious that this orchestrated story by PDP was fabricated to distort the reputation of INEC in the state and to soil the name of the officer in question.

“INEC has neither political affiliation nor inclination with any party in the state. Collection of PVC is based on a first-come, first-served.”

Agbaje who maintained that eligible Nigerians have not been denied their rights to collect the PVCs in all the 20 LGAs of the state, added that INEC’s bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) would not authenticate any cloned PVCs on election day.

    He said;

“The exercise being embarked upon in the commission at the moment is the scanning of PVCs to harvest phone numbers of eligible registrants yet to collect their cards with a view to contacting them via bulk sms,” the statement reads.

“The commission strongly believes in equity, transparency, integrity, and fairness in the conduct of her business.

“We shall continue to uphold these fundamental principles in the discharge of our constitutional duties and responsibilities as an unbiased umpire to all stakeholders.”
