Lagos govt. to solve infrastructure challenge using PPP model

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it would deploy the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model to tackle infrastructure challenges in the state.

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known at a stakeholders engagement of the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), at Onikan, with theme ”Private Partnership on Infrastructure Maintenance Regulation; Aligning with Global Best Practices”.

Sanwo-Olu said that the agency would ensure that businesses across the state thrive and bring about a change in the society, and technology would be used as an enabler.

”What we are doing is to ensure that we bring about a PPP model and begin to solve our entire infrastructure challenges. It is also in that same vein that we will be using a PPP model to also fast track our technology.

”We believe that technology can be a major lead for us and you are in that critical sector where we can use technology as an enabler.

”For technology to live and survive, it has to have a strong backbone which is also in infrastructure,” a statement quoted him as saying.

According to him, LASIMRA should not be seen as a big stick trying to make businesses difficult but as a body trying to fast track and enabler for businesses to thrive.

”It is only when we remove all of the red tapes of ease of doing businesses that all businessmen can thrive, can do well and create wealth that can bring about job creation, employment of our teeming youths and grow our economy,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He urged businessmen to embrace the policies of government and consider them as policies meant to make life better for Lagosians .

The governor said that his administration would deliver on all the promises made on assumption of office.

He said that LASIMRA would be monitored to make sure it continued in its professionalism to meet the yearnings of the industry.

According to him, the agency is a critical input to the present administration’s deliverables. (NAN)

  • LASG charges communities to supervise projects

LASG charges communities to supervise projects

Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has advised the members of the various Community Development Associations (CDAs) to serve as voluntary supervisors to ongoing projects across the state.

Sanwo-Olu gave the charge on Wednesday in Ikeja during the Year 2019 Community Day Celebration organised by the State’s Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.

He said that teamwork was important, adding that as such, all hands must be on deck to see that quality projects were delivered by contractors to the various communities.

According to him, the CDAs and the Community Develooment Councils ( CDCs) are the real engines of growth in the state, hence, they should work with the government.

”Our community development organisations: the Community Development Associations (CDAs) and the Community Development Councils (CDCs) are the real engines of growth.

“They are the owners of all our interventions in government.

”They are the ones that own every intervention. Everything we are building is for the communities, it is for the local governments.

”So, it is important that each local government takes ownership of the development initiatives in its areas.

”We need to ensure that once we have sent contractors out, you should monitor them and ensure that they do and deliver quality services,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said that such monitoring would ensure that the schools, the hospitals and the roads that those contractors were building meet the standards that were required of them.

”You have to serve as monitors and ensure that the right proportion of things needed are used.

“You have the right to present your complaints to any contractor once you discover that the work is not being properly done,” he said. (NAN)

  • Lagos Govt. to register places of worship

Lagos Govt. to register places of worship

The Lagos State Government says plans are on to register religious houses, to ensure sanity in the state.

The Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, made this known on Tuesday in Alausa, Ikeja, during a Stakeholders Meeting with the Nigeria Inter-religious Council (NIREC).

Akinbile-Yussuf said that the registration, which was supposed to kick-start by mid 2020, would help to fish out worship centres that were being used to perpetrate evil in the state.

She said that having a database of all religious bodies in the state would enable ease of reference, as well as ensure effective communication.

“We need to know our number, then we can know what we need, we can know where we belong, we can know what we are doing.

“So, we are coming up with the registration forms and we need your cooperation as religious bodies that represent us at the local government level.

“We will ensure that we have it on a platform that will be automated, then you can do it anywhere, it is not compulsory that you come to Alausa for the registration,” the commissioner said.

She said that once the platform was ready, religious bodies would be trained on how to use it for registration and at no cost.

Akinbile-Yussuf said that the purpose was to have easy access to Churches and Mosques in order for them to benefit from government programmes.

She said that the Ministry of Home Affairs would collaborate with the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources through the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), to eradicate noise pollution emanating from places of worship throughout the state.

She said that Lagos could only be a 21st Century economy if there was good environment devoid of noise pollution.

“We want to charge NIREC officials to ensure that they promote good environment by addressing all complaints by communities over noise pollution,” she said.

Akinbile-Yussuf also charged religious bodies to continue to ensure peaceful co-existence, as well as eschew violence and acts that could lead to wanton destruction of lives and property.

According to her, religious bodies should help government in community policing by monitoring, preaching, lecturing and praying against criminal acts in the state.

She said that the ministry would embark on training and retraining of religious leaders, in order to ensure development and inclusive governance in the state.

The commissioner called on the local government chairmen to carry NIREC along in their quest for a better Lagos.

NIREC members had earlier complained to the commissioner that the local government chairmen were not collaborating with the council. (NAN)
