479,028 number plates, driver’s licence issued in a year – LSG

Lagos State Government yesterday said it issued over 479,028 vehicle number plates and driver’s licence in the in the last one year.

The state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde who disclosed this newsmen explained that 288,000 number plates and 191,028 driver’s licence were issued by the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) on a weekly.

According to him, the agency issued a total of 6, 000 new number plates weekly; 24,000 monthly and a total of 288,000 in the last one year.

The Commissioner also noted that the administration had recently re-introduced the Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT) to assist in providing a robust database and sharing of valuable information about all new vehicles entering the state with the law enforcement agencies, which he said harped on safety as well as security alertness.

“In conformity with the international standard, Lagos State government has launched a newly designed Articulated and Allied Vehicle Number Plate (AVNP).

“The new AVNP comes in a set of three, which will be fixed on the cabin head, body and rear.

”A new website (verify.autoreg .ng) has also been created to enable law enforcement agency to verify the authenticity of vehicle number plates,” he said.

The commissioner added that the administration had simplified the process for the issuance of driver’s licence.

“The period for obtaining a driver’s licence has reduced from six weeks to two weeks. As at February 2020, a total of 191,028 driver’s licenses were processed and issued to their owners in the most seamless way.

“Likewise, there has been significant improvement in obtaining new number plates. It takes just a day to process and obtain a new number plate under the present administration. This is a departure from the obsolete cumbersome registration process,” he added.

Oladeinde also said the Ministry had completed the installation of truck barriers on selected bridges across the state in order to restrict the movement of articulated trucks.

  • LASG explains reason for Social Media Poll on lockdown

Lagos State Government, on Thursday, reacted to criticisms that trailed its online public opinion poll on another lockdown, explaining that the outcome of the polls slated to end tomorrow, Friday 15th May, 2020, will not be the only determinant of the final decision of the government on the Statewide lockdown.

The State government, through three of its social media platforms on Tuesday, 12th May, 2020, instituted a poll to determine the perspective of members of the public on the possibility of another lockdown of Lagos.

Speaking on the polls, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Olusina Thorpe said that the initiative was introduced as part of the inclusive strategy of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration to carry the masses along in Governance and also entrench participatory governance.

According to him, other factors would be considered by the State government before a final decision is taken on either imposing another lockdown or not in the coming weeks.

While analysing the results of the polls so far, Thorpe said that the closeness in the number of Lagosians who are in support of another lockdown compared to those opposed to the imposition of a fresh lockdown shows the controversial nature of the issue.

In his words, “Yes, we agree that the decision of the government on another Statewide lockdown should not be solely based on the outcome of the polls but the criticisms that had trailed the issue would make the government feel the pulse of the masses being governed”.

“As evident on the three social media platforms, some of the online users voted in favour of another lockdown while some voted against it and a few others were neutral. On our Facebook as at this morning, those who voted against a fresh lockdown are more than those who voted in favour of it. While on Twitter, the reverse was the case; Twitter users voted in favour of another lockdown”, he added.

The Permanent Secretary averred that with the wide exposure of the masses to the social media, the value of online survey cannot be undermined in the decision-making process, especially when such decision affects the populace, hence the need to also know what the masses feel about the issue of the lockdown.

Reacting to the views of some social media influencers on the polls, Thorpe called for patience with the State government, assuring Lagosians that whatever decision is taken by the Governor would eventually represent the views of the majority, especially the vulnerable members of the public.

While commending Lagosians for expressing their views through the social media platforms, the Permanent Secretary appealed to all residents of the State to continue to obey all safety and precautionary measures already reeled out by the State government and other relevant health officials.

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently decried the disposition of some residents who consciously disregarded the social distancing and other guidelines issued by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and health experts.

The Governor had threatened another lockdown in the weeks ahead if persistent disobedience and non-compliance with government’s directives on limiting the community spread of COVID-19 in the State prevails.

Operators, passengers must wear face masks – LASG

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has released guidelines for transport operations in the state, in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.

One sector that is important in checking the spread of covid-19, is the transport sector. So, ahead of the easing of the lockdown in the state, the state ministry of transportation met with key players in the sector.

The success, to a large extent, is dependent on the cooperation of these individuals, between the hours of 6am and 7pm daily, starting from 4th of May.

Some of the guidelines which they are expected to comply with include wearing face masks at all times, use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers or washing of hands with soap before and after each trip, disinfection of vehicles and parks regularly, as well as maintaining social distancing among passengers queuing to board buses.

The operators also raised issues of concern to them. They want some funds to enable them effect the changes and more time to reach owners of abandoned vehicles.

As part of the guidelines, passengers are also expected to report any operator that does not comply to the Monitoring Officers at sight or write to the Ministry, stating the Vehicle Registration Number, name of Park and Time of incident.

Handling and transportation of infectious waste generated from treatment of COVID-19 patients at isolation centres, must be done by Waste handlers wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment .

COVID-19: LASG orders public workers stay at home for 14 days

The Lagos State Government has ordered the state’s civil servants from Grade Levels 01-12 to stay at home for 14 days, beginning from Monday.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, gave the order while briefing newsmen on the update of Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) on Sunday at Lagos House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu said that the ”Stay-At-Home” order was part of efforts to further stem the spread of the ravaging COVID-19.

He urged operators in the private sector to emulate the gesture of the state government by directing their staff, who were on non essential service to stay at home in order to effectively combat and reduce the pandemic in the state.

According to him, in terms of the proactive measures taken to protect Lagos from the disease, the government had shut down schools and issued instructons to people not to congregate or form any gathering of more than 50 people at a time.

”I thank Lagosians who have obeyed this directive, which is in no way meant to deprive anybody of his or her freedom.

”Many mosques were closed on Friday and many churches shut down today.

”In addition to all the previous directives issued so far, I am now hereby directing all public officers in the entire unified public service from Grade Levels 1 to 12, which constitutes 70 percent of the entire public service workforce, to stay at home from Monday, March 23, 2020, for 14 days in the first instance.

”We will review this as time goes on. Members of the public are advised to refrain from visiting public offices, and to transact as much business as is possible through the telephone and online channels,” he said.

The Incident Commander said that the stay-at-home order does not affect medical personnel, Fire Service, LASEMA, LAWMA and other first respondents and essential services.

He said that government was working to ramp up its capacity to take on new cases as they were confirmed; and other health facilities would, in due time, be deployed to support the Mainland Infectious Diseases Hospital.

According to him, the government is setting up more facilities in Yaba, to contain a likely upsurge in Coronavirus cases.

Sanwo-Olu said that more health workers were being trained and retired health personnel were being put on notice that they might be recalled to serve in these trying times.

”Regarding our directives limiting gatherings to no more than 20 people, it is unfortunate that some of our people have refused to obey this directive, which was taken in the interest of all of us, after consultations with religious and community leaders.

”As I noted on Friday, in South Korea and Singapore, the disease spread largely because religious gatherings went on unchecked.

”I insist that this is no religious matter; it is simply a matter of morality and responsibility. Times like this call for a heightened commitment to doing the right thing. We are only as strong as the weakest links amongst us.

”I hereby order our law enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with this important Public Health Order on the suspension of all gatherings of more than 20 people.

”I am using this opportunity to encourage the private sector to take similar steps, to ensure that as many people as possible are able to stay at home for the foreseeable future.

”All traditional rulers should instruct all of their subjects and sensitize them on the need to avoid all traditional ceremonies and gatherings at this time.

”I would like to reassure all our people that there is no reason to panic. We are fully prepared for this emergency,” he said. (NAN)

LASG to extend `Eko Excel’ training to secondary school teachers

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said that it would soon extend the `Eko Excel’ training programme to secondary school teachers, so as to meet up with international best practices.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, said this at a two-day induction for newly appointed Principals and Vice-Principals of Lagos State Post Primary Teaching Service held in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the induction is: “Strategic Thinking: Management and Policy Development Skills for Newly Appointed Principals and Vice-Principals of Lagos State Secondary Schools.”

Adefisayo said that the performance of students was as a result of the quality of teachers in their various schools.

She also stated that the output of teachers was based on those in authority in the school.

She urged the teachers to always adapt to every rising challenge embodied in educational leadership and also in transformational leadership.

“So many lives are entrusted to your hands for grooming and mentorship; therefore, l urge you all to be up and doing.

“Do not forget that the teaching profession is to nurture minds.

“Be of great influence to the students, teach them morals and build their confidence and boldness,” the commissioner said.

She advised the participants to develop their skills, especially in the area of technology, continue to grow and be part of the 21st Century development.

Also, Mrs Elizabeth Ariyo, the chairman, Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), said that the newly appointed Principals and Vice-Principals were expected to provide leadership that would serve the moral purpose of education.

Ariyo said that this was a critical motivator for sustaining complex reforms.

She said that moral leadership, therefore, was at the heart of school improvement.

“We expect leadership that is underpinned by the principle of justice and beneficence.

“We also want leadership that is tough enough to demand a great deal from: students, parents, teachers and tender enough to encourage the hearts.

“These are the leadership we need in the smart city-Lagos,” she said.

She also advised the participants to act as role models and ensure that they put all they had learnt into practice.

Mrs Moronkeji Folashade , the President of All Nigeria Conference of Principals (ANCOPSS), Lagos Chapter, also gave a goodwill message.

She said that there was the need for the formulation and implementation of fresh and unique ideas that would cater for the education needs which would fit into the 21st Century.

She charged the participants to go back to their various schools to work passionately toward the realisation of the objectives of the smart city, which Lagos State was aiming at.

“Poor leadership is tantamount to poor output; therefore, l implore you to constantly work to improve and update yourselves.

“Learn strategy and growth tactics; be fair, firm and maintain an effective communication skill and remain perfect models for others.

“These are the basic principles of a good administrator,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-day workshop was aimed at making participants understand the need to develop creative and lateral skills.

It would also afford them the opportunity to understand the leadership paradigm of their work environment.

It was to appreciate the need to incorporate strategic thinking into the management of the school system and also expose the school heads to electronic elite management mindset.

The newly-appointed principals and vice principals were taken through emerging trends in effective school administration and management.

They were also exposed to the fundamental human rights in schools and how to curb social ills in the school environment with particular emphasis on sexual abuse.
