Liverpool’s injury crisis worsens as Southgate confirms Henderson injury

England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed Jordan Henderson was substituted during the Nations League clash against Belgium because of ‘tightness’ as Liverpool’s horror run of injuries worsened.

The Reds skipper was withdrawn at half-time and replaced by Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks as the Three Lions were dumped out of Nations League contention in a 2-0 loss to Belgium at Den Dreef on Sunday.

In his post-match press conference, Southgate confirmed Henderson failed to play the second half because of a fitness issue – but he was not sure of its severity.

Losing Henderson would be a big blow to injury-hit Liverpool, who were already reeling from news earlier in the day that Andy Robertson had picked up a hamstring injury in Scotland’s win against Serbia on Thursday.

With Henderson missing a significant chunk of Liverpool’s pre-season, Jurgen Klopp had carefully managed his captain’s game time, even withdrawing him at half-time during last month’s Champions League match against Ajax to limit his workload.

The Reds are already missing central defensive pairing Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to knee injuries, and with Trent Alexander-Arnold already sidelined and doubts over Robertson, Liverpool are facing the prospect of taking on Leicester City after the international break without any of their first-choice back line.

  • Klopp spent just two days working on Liverpool’s fab four unleashed against Man City

Klopp spent just two days working on Liverpool’s fab four unleashed against Man City

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he spent just two days working on the front four approach that left many observers surprised in the Reds’ trip to Manchester City.

Much of the build-up to a heavyweight Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium had been dominated by a supposed selection poser that pitted Roberto Firmino against Diogo Jota.

Liverpool’s established No.9 has been struggling for a spark of late, putting his position under threat from a summer signing that has hit the ground running at Anfield.

Many had Jota getting the nod for a meeting with City, but Klopp had other ideas and opted to field an even more adventurous staring XI against fellow title hopefuls.

That decision paid off as the Reds burst out of the blocks and into an early lead, but they did tire as the game went on and – after seeing Kevin De Bruyne miss a penalty for the Blues – were happy to make the short journey back to Merseyside with a 1-1 draw.

Klopp told Liverpool’s official website of tweaking his approach and taking a point: “Top game. Top, top level [from] both teams. Energy level outstanding from both teams, two really good football-playing sides battle against each other. It was outstandingly interesting to watch.

“I loved our start, obviously we played a different system and you saw that in the game – in moments we had still to adapt to it. We had two days’ time to work on it, we did that but in the end, under pressure from a proper opponent, it’s slightly different. But the boys did incredibly well, I liked really a lot of situations, a lot of football parts, how we defended City was really good.

“They had their 10 minutes when we weren’t as compact as necessary after the quick start. That’s where they came back, that’s the quality of City, but then it was again equal or level or whatever you want. So, I’m really fine with a point.”

Defending champions Liverpool have positioned themselves among the early frontrunners in 2020-21, and have arguably their toughest test out of the way after getting through a trip to the Etihad, but Klopp is eager to point out that there is still a long way to go.

The German added with 30 Premier League games still to take in and trophy bids to be sustained across multiple competitions: “Look, in the Premier League all opponents are tricky to play, unbelievable, so I don’t make really these kind of assumptions or think, ‘OK, we played them already and we played them already’.

“We have to play them again and wherever it is it will be difficult. It’s a tough period and for the boys it just goes on. They go now and play two, some of them three, games for their national teams and yeah, it’s a tough time.

“That’s why we have to make sure with the boys [that] we give them time, at least a few days when we can do it, to recover. Apart from that, the boys were ready to go again [against City] and I couldn’t be more happy about that.”

Liverpool will return to action after the international break with a home date against table-topping Leicester on November 21.

  • ‘Jota will spark all of Liverpool’s forwards into life’ – Portuguese backed by Aldridge to aid Salah, Mane & Firmino

‘Jota will spark all of Liverpool’s forwards into life’ – Portuguese backed by Aldridge to aid Salah, Mane & Firmino

Diogo Jota is capable of providing a spark that ignites all of the forwards on Liverpool’s books, not just Roberto Firmino, says John Aldridge.

The arrival of the Portugal international at Anfield was always intended to raise the game of those around him.

Jurgen Klopp, despite masterminding Champions League and Premier League title triumphs, was considered to be in need of greater squad depth at the business end of the field.

Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have become talismanic figures for the Reds, but there was little support behind them.

Jota’s presence has changed that, with the 23-year-old making an immediate impact on Merseyside.

He has already earned himself a starting berth, with Klopp opting to field a front four against Manchester City, and Aldridge believes collective standards will be raised amid added competition for places.

The former Reds striker told the Liverpool Echo, with Firmino under the greatest pressure to perform after enduring an uncharacteristic dip of late: “We played so well against Atalanta that I expected the manager to say same again with the line-up so I was a bit surprised to see the manager start all four forwards.

“You don’t need to be an expert to see Bobby Firmino is still struggling, I thought he did look a bit better on Sunday [against City] and a little sharper but for whatever reason, whether it’s confidence or whatever, he’s been off it for a long time now.

“I do feel the introduction of Diogo Jota will spark them all into life eventually, we saw how it did at Atalanta and ultimately competition for places can only be healthy.

“There will be occasions when the manager feels it’s right to play all four, perhaps more when we’re at home to sides who are going to sit in and maybe the reason for doing it at City was more down to the injuries we’ve got in other areas at the moment.

“Jota’s great because he can play in any of the forward positions and will keep everyone on their toes. He was brilliant against Atalanta when he played through the centre and that’s where I’d like to see more of him, with Mo and Sadio either side.

“There’s no doubt the four of them can play together and Bobby and the manager will know he has to find a way of getting back to his best again because he’s a fantastic player and we need him back to what he was doing a year or two ago.”

Firmino has just one goal to his name this season, while Jota is already up to seven, and Klopp is set to face big selection calls each and every time he sends his Liverpool troops into battle.

  • Liverpool boss needs off-colour Brazilian to rediscover his mojo

Liverpool boss needs off-colour Brazilian to rediscover his mojo

When the board went up, Roberto Firmino looked surprised.

    He wasn’t the only one.

As the rain fell at the Etihad, Jurgen Klopp made his move.

With the game in the balance, tied at 1-1 with more than half an hour to play, the Liverpool boss felt a change was needed. Xherdan Shaqiri was summoned, out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Manchester City away. The big one. Go and make an impact, son.

Firmino was the man to be replaced. The Reds’ No.9 is usually made for games like this; games which require tactical acuity, a sure touch and positional discipline as well as relentless work rate, but his race was run inside 59 minutes this time. As Liverpool sought control, the Brazilian was sacrificed.

Klopp had insisted on Friday that Firmino remains “the difference maker” for the Premier League champions, and that critics who suggest his influence is waning, or that his modest goal return is becoming an issue, were to be ignored. “I can’t help those people,” he told his pre-match press conference.

His actions backed up his words. Firmino, left out of the starting line-up against Atalanta earlier in the week, was back in against City, with Klopp also retaining the trio that had done the damage in Bergamo – Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and hat-trick hero Diogo Jota.

It was certainly a bold approach – even Pep Guardiola seemed a little surprised when asked about it prior to kick-off – but it threatened to pay off as Liverpool bossed the early exchanges. Sharp and direct, the Reds’ fearsome foursome had Guardiola’s side on the back foot from the first whistle.

They led inside 13 minutes, Salah converting from the penalty spot after Kyle Walker’s ill-judged challenge on Mane. That’s eight goals in eight league games this season for the Egyptian; a start that only Fernando Torres (2009-10) and Robbie Fowler (1995-96) can match for Liverpool in the Premier League era.

Firmino is finding the goals a little harder to come by, of course. His last 31 appearances in all competitions have yielded only three goals, with only one in 12 outings so far this season.

It’s showing, too. He was hesitant when given a sight of goal inside a minute against City, opting to try and round Ederson and making a mess of it. In the second half, he wasted another presentable opening, firing well over the bar when there were options available.

In front of goal, his confidence seems lacking, and there were a few too many careless touches in general. The space was there, he just didn’t use it well enough, often enough.

Klopp is right to talk about everything else Firmino brings – his intuitive pressing, his ability to connect play, to attract defenders and open up space for others – but there is a reason why questions are being asked.

Perhaps this dip – and it is a dip – is to be expected. Liverpool are perhaps the most intense team in the world, and Firmino is the player who plays the most games for them.

His workload has been immense. Since the start of the 2017-18 campaign, he has made 166 appearances. Only Salah, with 165, comes close to that number.

Throw in a World Cup and a Copa America, in which he started every game of Brazil’s triumphant campaign, and it certainly adds up. Few top-level footballers, if any, give as much as he does, week in and week out. And he turned 29 last month.

Klopp knows that. Firmino, in form or not, remains central to his plans. Doubt doesn’t even come into it.

“I don’t have to say one word about Bobby, and how important he is to us,” he said last week. “I don’t waste my time with that.”

Perhaps not, but with Jota – seven goals in 11 appearances since joining from Wolves – settling in nicely, and with Shaqiri back fit and looking bright and hungry, at least Klopp has the option to rotate his attackers, where perhaps that hasn’t been the case in recent seasons.

For Firmino, that could well be good news. After all, if anyone deserves the odd rest from time to time, it’s him. And if anyone has enough credit in the bank to pay them through a slump in form, it’s him.

Klopp, though, will hope his spark returns soon enough. And when it does, Liverpool will take some stopping.

    Again.

  • Manchester City vs Liverpool almost a title-decider – Richard Dunne

Manchester City vs Liverpool almost a title-decider – Richard Dunne

Former Manchester City captain Richard Dunne says Sunday’s match against Liverpool is “massive” and expects it to have a significant impact on the Premier League title race.

Defending champions and current league leaders Liverpool travel to the Etihad, already holding a five-point advantage over City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are currently 10th in the table after an inconsistent start to the campaign but Dunne believes his former club will have the belief they can push on and regain the title if they win this weekend.

“It’s huge. This game almost decides the season. The two teams haven’t lost a lot of games over the last few years so they know that the importance of the three points in this one is massive,” Dunne told Sky Sports News.

“City go into it after beating Liverpool 4-0 last year but they’ll know that wasn’t the real Liverpool side, they’d already wrapped up the league by then.

“It’s going to be very competitive. I think for City, and for Liverpool as well, they’ll understand how big it is. They’ll understand that everything up to now has sort of been a warm-up for this game.”

“It’s not just the result of one game this weekend, this could turn the championship and this could give you the belief to go on a run and try a build a lead, or for City to catch up with Liverpool.

“The players are going to be really up for it and looking forward to it. It’s got the makings of a great game.”

When asked if he expected his former club to win on Sunday, Dunne added: “City need to win. They’re a few points behind Liverpool and I fancy them at the weekend.

“I think they’re in good form, Liverpool have a couple of problems defensively and I fancy City to take advantage of that.”

Doubts remain over whether City striker Sergio Aguero will recover from a thigh injury in time for the match, although Gabriel Jesus is set to be available after coming off the bench to score against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Makeshift centre-forward Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 3-0 win over the Greek side, and Dunne believes the Spaniard could keep his place in the team against Liverpool.

“I’ve been very impressed with Torres playing centre-forward,” he added.

“They signed him to play on the wing but through circumstances he’s ended up in a central position. The way he’s been playing has been really positive for the team.

“He’s been stretching defences in behind and giving them different options. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Torres who started.

“To have Aguero back would be brilliant and Jesus came back with that goal. Even if you have them two in reserve to come on at some stage in the game, it’s a real threat for Liverpool.

“I just think the fitness and the rhythm of Torres, points to him starting this weekend.”

  • Liverpool & Manchester City in race for Alaba

Liverpool & Manchester City in race for Alaba

Premier League giants Liverpool and Man City are reportedly in a race to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba in the January transfer window. Alaba has gained the attention of several top suitors across Europe after it was revealed that the European champions withdrew from the contract negotiations with the Austrian. It is now believed that the Bundesliga giants will look to offload Alaba in the winter itself rather than risk losing him on a free transfer in the summer.

Earlier this week, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer spoke to BR and revealed that the club withdrew their new deal for Alaba, whose current contract at the Allianz Arena expires in the summer of 2021. Heiner explained that Bayern had offered Alaba a new five-year extension at the club but the salary negotiations between the two parties had been a major issue. Alaba later claimed that he was disappointed with the way the situation was handled and drew speculation over his future.

Prior to Thiago’s move from Bayern to Liverpool, Bayern CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, warned that the club will not allow players to run down their contracts and that they wouldn’t mind offloading key players if they fail to extend their deals at the club. This could mean that Bayern might allow Alaba, who has been at the club since 2008, to leave in the January transfer window itself instead of losing him on a free transfer.

According to a report from AS, Premier League champions Liverpool are now keen on signing Alaba as a potential replacement for the injured Van Dijk. Van Dijk has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the season and the Merseyside club have an injury crisis at centre-back. With Alaba’s future at Bayern in doubt, the Reds are reportedly keen on making a move for the 28-year-old in January to strengthen their back-line.

The report from AS also goes on to state that Man City boss Pep Guardiola is monitoring Alaba’s situation at Bayern. The versatile defender played at left-back when Guardiola was in charge of the club and helped the Bavarians to three consecutive Bundesliga titles under the Catalan. With Benjamin Mendy’s constant injury woes and the long-term future of Oleksandr Zincehnko uncertain, Guardiola reportedly wants Alaba at the Etihad.

However, Liverpool and Man City aren’t the only clubs that are monitoring Alaba’s situation at Bayern. Reports claim that Real Madrid, PSG and Juventus are also keeping close tabs on Bayern’s jewel, who could be available on a free transfer next summer. At Bayern, Alaba has gone on to make 396 appearances so far, scoring 31 goals, winning eight Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.

Salah levels Gerrard’s Liverpool UCL record

In just his third season with the six-time European champions, the Egypt star has matched the club legend’s feat with a strike against Atalanta

Mohamed Salah moved level with Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s top goal scorer in European Cup and Champions League history on Tuesday.

Salah netted a stunning breakaway goal early in the second half against Atalanta as the Reds tore the Serie A side apart in a 5-0 victory.

That strike, a composed left-footed finish at the end of a rapid burst forward, was the Egypt international’s 21st in the Champions League proper for the team. Salah has therefore tied Gerrard’s all-time club benchmark.

Salah, who reached the 2018 final in his first season at Anfield and won the competition the following year, swiftly teed up a fourth Liverpool goal for Sadio Mane.

Diogo Jota had scored twice before the break and completed his hat-trick – his first in Liverpool colours – as Jurgen Klopp’s side moved 5-0 up after just 54 minutes.

That would be the end of the scoring as Jurgen Klopp’s men cruised to a win that saw them win their third straight match in the Champions League group stage.

Liverpool are in pole position to qualify for the knockout phase after going top of Group D, five points clear of Ajax and Atalanta who are both on four.

The five-goal victory on Tuesday means Klopp’s side also set the record for the biggest ever win by an English club away to Italian opposition in European competition.

Jota has impressed for the Reds of late, with the Portugal international only the second player to score on his first two starts in the Champions League for Liverpool, following Robbie Keane back in 2008.

Having also starred for Wolves in the Europa League last term, Jota has now scored three hat-tricks in the Champions League and Europa League combined since the start of last season, the only player to have done so more than once.

He has scored nine goals since the start of last season in European competition – six for Wolves and now three for Liverpool – which is more than any other player for an English side in that period, excluding strikes in qualifying matches.

Following the international break, Liverpool’s next Champions League match will be against Atalanta at Anfield on November 25.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane added to the goal-fest with brilliant efforts early in the second half, before Jota completed his hat-trick with the visitors’ fifth with just 54 minutes on the clock.

Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Cristoph Freund expects Erling Haaland to eventually sign for Liverpool.

Haaland left Salzburg in January to join Borussia Dortmund for £20m and has scored 24 goals in 27 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit.

The 20-year-old Norwegian has since been linked with the European elite and when former Germany international Lothar Matthaus suggested a move to Liverpool, Freund replied: “He will land there.”

“He can play for any club in the world,” the sporting director added. “With his mentality, his will and self confidence, he will be able to make a mark on European football in the next ten years.”

Freund also suggested Haaland led the decision to sign for Borussia Dortmund earlier this year.

“The talks with Dortmund were short,” Freund said. “They told me they had come to an agreement. We didn’t have that much influence on it, but it worked out correctly.

“Many clubs were interested and go in touch. In the end, it was a decision made by the player.”
