Manufacturers in Nigeria Experience Annual Loss of N10.1tn due to Power Crisis

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has revealed that the country’s persistent electricity shortage poses a significant obstacle to the profitability of manufacturers, resulting in an estimated annual economic loss of N10.1tn, equivalent to approximately two percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

MAN emphasized that this unfavorable situation has positioned Nigeria among the most challenging countries to conduct business in, ranking 171 out of 190 countries.

The association’s statement was issued in response to President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the Electricity Bill.

According to MAN, the current power supply is insufficient to meet the energy demands of both the manufacturing sector and the entire population.

However, MAN acknowledged that the Electricity Act of 2023, if effectively implemented, has the potential to be a transformative force for the manufacturing sector.

The statement read, “As an advocacy Association, MAN has consistently advocated for cost-reflective electricity tariffs to prevent the exploitation of our members. Fortunately, this new Act aligns with our stance and is expected to enable a cost-reflective tariff by fostering healthy price competition between states and private investors.”

“The country’s erratic power supply is one of the primary reasons for the relocation of some of our members. If the new Act adequately addresses the challenges in the power sector, we are optimistic that it will attract manufacturing foreign direct investment (FDI), boost sector performance, and increase the sector’s contribution to the economy.”

MAN expressed optimism that if utilized effectively, this substantial revenue could help address infrastructure deficits in many states without imposing additional tax burdens on manufacturers.

The aggrieved mother is begging an Ogba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos to mete out severe punishment on him.

The accused was alleged to have taken advantage of the innocence of his daughter when his wife was not around to engage in the act.

The police said the incident happened in the Lekki area of Lagos.

The police prosecutor, Akeem Raji, said when the 10-year-old girl could no longer bear the pain, she reported the matter to her mother.

The accused is currently facing a two-count charge of sexual assault and defilement, offences that attract up to 14 years in jail if found guilty.

The police said that the highly traumatised girl alleged that her father locked her inside their apartment, forced her to open her mouth and ordered her to suck him before forcing himself on her.

“My Lord, the beast of a man threatened to kill his daughter if she reported the incident to her mother,” the police said.

He was later transferred to the Gender Section of the Lagos State Police Command.

However, when he was arraigned, the court did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Akeem Raji, asking the court to give a date and refer the matter to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The presiding magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, ordered his remand in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri, Lagos, pending the DPP’s report.

Patronize our local products – MAN tells Govts’

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has called on both state and federal governments to patronise its members by buying their products.

The association also lamented huge taxes slammed on its members in Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

An eight-man delegation of MAN was led by its new Chairman of Akwa Ibom and Cross River State branch, Akin Oyediran to visit the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ivara Esu. MAN said that lack of government patronage, poor road infrastructure between the two states, huge and multiple taxation and epileptic power supply had impacted much against manufacturing.

He noted that governments had churned out several economic policies but that lack of enforcement and implementation were absent.

He lamented that 90 per cent of MAN members were producing at less than 30% capacity due to several hurdles and impediments.

Prof Esu said the government has made available free land and other incentives, as well as offered to concession the 38 industries built by the Gov Ben Ayade administration.

“If you watch our policy, you will see that we have embarked on the establishment of several industries. But to our disappointment, we have not seen your members come forward to support this initiative of the government,” he told the MAN delegates.

  • 4 Ways to get your man do anything for you

4 Ways to get your man do anything for you

All it takes to get men is simply showering them with affection and attention and not pointing out their shortcomings in a belittling way or nagging them.

So, here are ways to get what you want from your man:

    Act sweet and innocent

Giving him the act of a sweet, innocent damsel in distress has a way of charming men to do just anything you ask for. He will be charmed by your sweet and innocent disposition and compelled to take away your distress.

For instance, if you need him to drive you to your fitness appointment, you should ask him in the sweetest voice possible, using endearing words, putting on a distressed look that tells how much you need him while looking all innocent as if you didn’t really contrive the whole thing. Putting up the sweet innocent girl requires expertise though. So you can start practicing in front of your mirror.

Get or do something he likes

Getting your man a surprise gift or doing what he likes is an effective way to melt his heart and have him do things for you. You can decide to pick up those boxers for him from the mall, make a special dinner for the two of you, watch his favorite sport with him, get him a thoughtful wrapped-up small gift, do the laundry, give him a massage, etc.

Getting or doing what he likes will put him in a happy mood as well as make him feel more affection for you which is the right time to ask for what you want. Chances are, he will do or give what you want in as much as you are not asking for his destiny.

    Give him some good loving

I am talking about giving him that mind-boggling French kiss and driving him to cloud nine with freakish sex. Yea, men will always be men and one of the ways to get them ready and willing to pull the moon for you is by sexually gratifying them. So, make your man sexually happy and he will happily get you all the pearls in the world if he can.

    Appreciate your man

This is all about making your man feel good about himself, making him feel you are proud of him and glad he is your man. However sending the message of appreciation requires taking action such as leaning over and planting a kiss and telling him you love him, expressing gratitude in words and kind whenever he did something in the home, flaunting him, pouring compliments all over him, hanging out with him and taking time to do his favorite things with him. All of these are enveloped in appreciation and they’ll make your man do or give you what you want without hesitation.

  • MAN welcomes CBN’s unification of exchange rates

MAN welcomes CBN’s unification of exchange rates

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) says the unification of the country’s exchange rate is a welcome development that will engender increased investment inflow in the real sector of the economy.

Mr Mansur Ahmed, MAN President, made this remark in a report made available to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

Ahmed said that the association had, over the years, been advocating for a unified exchange rate to promote a market-friendly rate in the country.

The unified rate, he said, is capable of facilitating stable production planning and engender sustainable economic growth.

He said that drawing from basic knowledge of the transmission mechanism of exchange rate management and experiences of Cuba and India, the current forex unification agenda would entrench a convergence and enhance exchange rate stability.

“It is, therefore, gratifying as it appears that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has now unified the country’s exchange rate.

“Clearly, this is a welcome development and a laudable initiative that has come at the right time.

“`This is more so, particularly, now that the economic outlook is gloomy in light of the impact of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic that has culminated in uninspiring macroeconomic situations,’’ Ahmed said.

He recalled with delight that IMF and World Bank had at different times advised the country on the need to unify the multiple exchange rate windows to prevent distortions in investment decisions in the public and private sectors of the economy.

“In fact, the World Bank had attributed the country’s loss of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to investors’ exasperation from perceived manipulation of the foreign exchange market.

“The unification will also boost investors’ confidence, control rising inflation and promote transparency, entrench better exchange rate management and eradicate distortions to the barest minimum.

“It is expected to also eliminate the notorious socially destructive rent-seeking activities, halt the incidence of round-tripping, ensure better allocation of resources, facilitates income expansion and stimulate the inflow of foreign investment into the economy.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the CBN had on July 7 made an adjustment which moved the rate at the Special Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS) to N381 per dollar.

The MAN President, however, stressed the need to recognise the existence of the unavoidable pains that naturally came with the transition from a multiple exchange regime to the domain of a single exchange rate.

Particularly, he said, there is the burden of dollar-denominated loans and offsetting existing credit commitments to foreign suppliers of raw materials.

He advised that the CBN put a measure in place to minimise the intensity of the pain by considering outstanding obligations of manufacturers from the second quarter 2019 till date.

“Given at N345 to a dollar prior to unification and allows such to settle at between N330 and N360,’’ he said.

According to him, this will enable banks to redeem these obligations to foreign suppliers of manufacturers.

He said that many factories might close and the CBN stimulus packages to the manufacturing sector would suffer a huge setback as cash flow crunch becomes the order of the day.

Ahmed also recommended that the apex bank should develop an appropriate implementation strategy that would engender a successful transition from the current multiple windows to a single efficient one.

“The CBN should also ensure that the strategy pursues two fundamental objectives.

“The first, is to limit the short-term pains until efficiency gains materialise by responding swiftly with an inward-oriented rescue guideline while the second should seek to boost the pace at which such efficiency gains materialise.

“It should also submit all the instruments of exchange rate determination gradually to the unseen forces of demand and supply as a matter of necessity,’’ Ahmed advised.

He also urged the apex bank to completely avoid the temptation of interference in order to fully harvest all the benefits that foreign exchange unification can offer. (NAN)
