NAF Wings Six New Helicopter Pilots After UK Training

he Nigerian Air Force on Friday winged six new helicopter pilots who recently completed their basic flying training at Draken Helicopter Academy in the United Kingdom.

This is according to a statement signed by air force spokesperson Edward Gabkwet.

In his remark during the winging ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao reiterated the importance of the human factor as the most critical airpower component that must be enhanced and sustained for effective and efficient performance, the statement said.

“This, according to the CAS, gave reason for the increase in manpower development witnessed in the NAF in recent times,” the statement added.

Read the rest of the statement below:
He went on to state that these efforts are expected to place the Service in a dominant position to deliver on its constitutional role more effectively, especially in the light of NAF’s involvement in several internal security operations across the country.

The overall effect of these efforts, according to the CAS, is that the NAF, operating in synergy with sister Services and other security agencies, will be better positioned to more effectively counter both domestic and foreign threats to the nation’s security and the wellbeing of our people.

Speaking further, Air Marshal Amao revealed that the NAF currently has a total of 195 officers and airmen/airwomen undergoing various training courses abroad cutting across several specialties and trades.

He also stated that locally, there are 12 student pilots undergoing Basic Fighter Training at 403 Flying Training School, Kano, while 10 others are undergoing Basic Transport Training at 401 Flying Training School, Kaduna. He emphasized that these courses are aimed at maintaining combat readiness by increasing the number of pilots to man existing aircraft, including the 26 new platforms acquired by the Federal Government in the past 6 years.

On the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, the CAS stated that about 60 NAF personnel, comprising pilots, engineers, technicians, and other specialists, have completed their training on the aircraft in the USA.

While encouraging the newly winged pilots, the CAS urged them not to rest on their oars as the feat they have achieved also comes with a burden of responsibility as so much is expected of them.

He also advised them to continue to give their best to the Service and the Nation.

Air Marshal Amao also used the opportunity of the ceremony to appreciate President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support to the NAF.

Earlier, the Chief of Training and Operations (CTOP), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) James Gwani, noted that the winging of the pilots further lends credence to one of the Key Drivers of the CAS, which is to “Pursue purposeful training and human capacity development’.

He added that the new pilots would undoubtedly further enhance NAF’s capacity for effective, efficient, and timely employment of air power in response to Nigeria’s national security imperatives.

While giving the highlights of the courses, the CTOP stated that the Basic Flying Course 24B, which commenced from 27 February 20 to 20 June 21, included 3 phases: Basic Rotary Wing Phase, Operational Rotary Wing Phase and Conversion Phase.

The ceremony had in attendance Branch Chiefs of Headquarters NAF, Directors as well as relatives of the newly winged pilots.

    NAF strikes decimates terrorists stronghold

A coordinated multiple airstrikes by aircraft from the Nigerian Airforce (NAF) have destroyed strongholds of terrorist’s commanders at the Lake Chad axis.

This is despite the alleged reunion of Boko Haram and ISWAP factions in the area.

Report indicates that the intelligence inspired operation was targeted at various terrorists’ camps in Sabon Tumbu, Jibularam and Kwalaram. The latest development is coming after a report suggested that Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists have reunited in a 13-minute video showing the gunmen placing “their hands atop one another, while chanting words of solidarity, to demonstrate their reuniting and togetherness.” An intelligence source involved in the operation said that the aircraft also bombarded the spiritual base and training camps of the terrorists in the North-eastern part of Borno State and the fringes of Lake Chad. “Intelligence revealed that their leaders including Ali Chakkar and other top ISWAP commanders were holding a meeting when the attacks were launched on their locations. “The precision-guided airstrikes coordinated by the Air Task Force Command resulted in the killing of very large numbers of ISWAP Boko Haram Terrorists.”

The NAF Spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet confirmed the attacks on the locations

He said: “We don’t differentiate between Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists as we successfully launched the devastating intelligence-led aerial attacks targeting the terrorists in those locations.”

JUST IN: NAF dismisses report of terrorists attack at Kaduna base

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has said its Base in Kaduna was never attacked by terrorists, contrary to the social media reports.

In a statement, the Director Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, said the speculation was the handiwork of merchants of fake news.

He said occupants of the Base are going about their normal businesses.

According to the statement, “merchants of fake news are at it again. This time around, their focus is on the premier Nigerian Air Force Base at Kaduna, which they claimed came under terrorist attack in the early hours of today, 26 June 2021.

“Members of the public should please disregard the news as it is entirely false. There was nothing of such as the inhabitants of the entire Base are going about their normal activities and duties without any threat whatsoever.”

  • Hoodlums kill NAF personnel, protest presence of military Taskforce in Oshodi

Hoodlums kill NAF personnel, protest presence of military Taskforce in Oshodi

Commuters and traders around the busy Mosafejo area of Oshodi, Lagos, were on Thursday morning enveloped by fear as hoodlums went on rampage.

It was gathered that the riotous hoodlums who vandalised vehicles, were protesting the presence of soldiers attached to the Ops MESA at the bus park in Oshodi.

Reports had it that soldiers were in the park to meet the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) chairman following the murder of a non-commissioned officer (NCO) of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

Another account indicated they were in the premises following the snatching of a mobile phone belonging to a woman married to a military officer.

It was learnt that the unnamed Airman was killed on Monday and his body dumped on top of the pedestrian bridge.

Our Correspondent gathered that the deceased soldier who was plain clothed, had boarded an Ikorodu bound vehicle when suddenly a fracas broke out at the park between bus operators and passengers.

He was said to have intervened in the fracas in a bid to restore peace but was killed in the process and his body left atop the bridge till Tuesday when passersby saw and evacuated it to a nearby mortuary.

According to a source, the soldier’s colleagues who were worried about his sudden disappearance made enquiries and discovered his last seen position was at Oshodi.

They were said to have gone to the park on Tuesday and were told a dead man was seen on top of the bridge and evacuated to the mortuary.

“The soldiers then went round nearby morgues and eventually saw him. He was moved to NAF mortuary. So, the authorities asked Ops MESA to go to the park and find out from the chairman what happened that day. They were also directed to find out those responsible for the murder of the Airman.

“But as soon as the area boys saw Ops MESA approaching the park, they became riotous and were shouting that soldiers have come to arrest their chairman. That was what happened,” said a source who pleaded anonymity.

News of soldiers’ takeover soon spread to other parts of Oshodi, forcing traders and commuters to flee.

We gathered that the chaos led to many vehicles being vandalised while some persons were said to have sustained injuries.

Reacting to the incident, police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said calm has been restored, adding that investigation into the cause of the violence was ongoing.

He said: “The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the conflict that occurred at Capa Park/Mosafejo Oshodi, Lagos, on Thursday May 20, at 7am.

“Normalcy has been restored to the area, as the matter is under investigation. We urge Lagosians to go about their lawful businesses in the area and in the state in general.

“No cause for alarm. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu has ordered that intensive patrol in the area.”

But the NAF denied Thursday’s unrest was connected to the murdered Airman, saying unconfirmed reports available to them indicated it was about a wife to a military officer whose phone was snatched.

According to NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the Airman was strangled to death on Monday by suspected hoodlums and his murder was unconnected to Thursday morning’s unrest.

He said: “The Airman was killed on Monday and his body was dumped on Oshodi Bridge and was discovered by early morning cleaners who raised alarm and the NAF was duly informed. Thereafter the airman’s corpse was deposited at Yaba hospital.

“Investigation revealed that the Airman was strangled to death by suspected hoodlums.

“However the unrest at Oshodi is not in relation to the Airman’s death. Though not yet confirmed, it was gathered that a lady’s phone was snatched and her husband happens to be military personnel.”

Similarly, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army which also confirmed there were skirmishes at Oshodi, said investigation was ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.

Spokesman for the Division, Major Olaniyi Osoba said: “The situation is currently under control as commuters are already going about with their normal businesses without any harassment. Investigation is ongoing to determine what caused the unfortunate incident.”

  • NAF To Investigate Report Its Strikes Killed Soldiers In Borno

NAF To Investigate Report Its Strikes Killed Soldiers In Borno

The Nigerian air force on Monday said it was investigating reports that its airstrikes accidentally killed ground troops in Mainok, Borno State.

A video of a soldier describing the attack had been circulating on social media.

“The NAF wishes to state that visuals and reports being circulated are currently being investigated and the general public will be duly updated on the alleged incident,” a statement on the Air Force’s verified Twitter page said.

The air force has been involved in a couple of tragedies this year.

An air force jet supporting ground troops fighting Boko Haram terrorists went missing in north-east Borno in March.

In February, seven officials died after a military plane crashed in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

    Friendly Fire
The air force bomber “accidentally” hit the wrong coordinates while targeting Boko Haram insurgents who had attacked the troops on Sunday, military sources said, as reported by online newspaper TheCable.

According to the sources, the insurgents had attacked a military base in Mainok and reportedly overpowered the troops, who then called for reinforcement.

But the reinforcement truck was shelled by the airstrike.

    — Shehu Zubairu (@ShehuZubair) April 26, 2021

The truck which was sent for reinforcement was targeted and shelled by the air strike following a flawed intelligence, sources said.

One of the soldiers in the affected area told TheCable:

“They (Boko Haram) came with heavy machines, about four MRAPS (mine-resistant ambush protected) vehicles and they overpowered the ground troops,” a soldier in the affected area told TheCable

“Troops sent signals for air support and when they came, it missed the main coordinates; where the air force shelled their bomb was on the location of troops instead of that of Boko Haram.

“The aircraft had to turn back. They realised that they mistargeted (and) most of the soldiers started running inside the bush.”

Boko Haram releases video showing downing of NAF fighter jet

A Boko Haram faction has released footage showing the downing of a Nigerian fighter aircraft.

HumAngle reports that the video showed fighters carrying Rocket Propelled Grenade, artillery equipment, the corpse of the pilot and the aircraft’s debris.

The website shared screenshots of the crashed jet, both mid-air and on the ground, on Friday via its Twitter page.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha-Jet was deployed for an operation against the Boko Haram sect.

On Wednesday, the military confirmed it went off the radar, with no traces found since.

The fighter aircraft lost contact with the base at about 5pm, the same day, while on an interdiction mission in support of ground troops.

Locals saw the jet fly around Goni Kurmiri and Njimia villages after attacking terrorist locations around the Sambisa Forest.

Recall we had reported the fear among the military and civilian population who speculated that the insurgents, who possess sophisticated weapons, might have shot the aircraft.

Intelligence sources had explained that bad weather was hindering the search which commenced shortly after the disappearance.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao flew to Maiduguri on Thursday over the incident.
