PDP Denies Postponing 2022 National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied postponing its 2020 national convention scheduled for Saturday.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, PDP delegates had gathered in Abuja, the nation’s capital where the exercise is expected to take place.

But there had been some media reports that the main opposition party may postpone the exercise, hours after the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) shifted its convention to June 6.

In a statement issued on Saturday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the party is not thinking of shelving the convention for a later date.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP states in very clear terms that is has not postponed its 2022 Special National Convention. The 2022 Special National Convention of the PDP is on course as scheduled today, Saturday May 28, 2022 and there is no contemplation whatsoever for postponement,” the statement read.

“The PDP as a party of due process has since commenced processes to elect our Presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections in line with our mission to rescue and rebuild our nation from misrule.”

According to him, the PDP “remains focused and will not be distracted by the shenanigans and underhand dealings of the rudderless, deceitful and manipulative All Progressives Congress (APC), which is desperate to orchestrate uncertainties, derail the electoral process and subvert the Will of the people in the 2023 general elections.”

This is even as Ologunagba stated that the exercise “is already on course, our Presidential candidates, national delegates, teeming members of our great Party and Nigerians from across the country are set for the National Convention, which will at the end, credibly and transparently deliver a Presidential candidate who will be the choice of majority of Nigerians in the 2023 general elections.”

The PDP spokesman also charged party members, swarming supporters, the International Community, election monitors and the general public to disregard and completely discountenance suggestions that the 2022 Special National Convention has been postponed.

He insisted that that “APC is fighting a lost battle as its resort to manipulations and underhand dealings can never sway Nigerians in their determination to vote out the APC in 2023 and commence the rebuilding of our nation on the platform of the PDP.”

Buhari Meets APC Govs ahead of National Convention

Governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) say they are working towards the process to produce consensus candidates ahead of March 26th National Convention.

The chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, Atiku Bagudu, said this Wednesday while fielding questions from State House reporters after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Bagudu, who said the APC governors would support any process that would lead to a consensus, urged his colleagues to explore the option.

He said each governor presented the allocation of party positions at zonal level to President Buhari.

The President had last month said he was in favour of the consensus option to produce candidates for the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) offices.

The meeting was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and 16 governors from Kebbi, Plateau, Kogi, Yobe, Ogun, Kaduna, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Imo, Niger, Jigawa, Kwara, Zamfara, Nasarawa, and Borno States.

  • APC dares INEC, insists on March 26 for national convention

APC dares INEC, insists on March 26 for national convention

    By Isaac Kertyo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that it has not fallen short of the law in anyway with regards to the letter it sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor its forthcoming National Convention.

Barr. Ismail Ahmed, APC National Youth Leader and Spokesman, Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), said this on Friday in Abuja while speaking with newsmen.

Solacebase reports that the APC National Convention has been slated for March 26 to elect new national executives to manage the party’s affairs, which is presently being managed by its CECPC.

The INEC in a letter, had rejected an invitation to an emergency meeting of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) ahead of its national convention.

INEC’s response, dated March 9 and signed by its Secretary, Rose Anthony, was titled: “Re: Invitation to the emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee”, and addressed to the National Chairman, APC CECPC.

The commission drew the attention of the APC CECPC to the fact that the letter of invitation was not signed by Gov. Mai Mala Buni, the National Chairman APC CECPC, and its Secretary, Sen. John Akpanudoedehe, in accordance with extant laws.

According to the commission, this is contrary to the provision of Article 1.1.3 of INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Party Operations (2018).

Ahmed, however, said the APC had comply with all the rules and had appropriately notified INEC, adding that it is no longer an issue

He added that Prof. Tahir Mamman, who oversees the party’s legal department would speak on the issue in due time.

“APC national convention would hold on March 26. I’m not only a youth leader, I’m also a lawyer. And we have served a notice to INEC for the 26th of February earlier.

“We served that notice on Feb. 5 and that was the required 21 days. If you are going to make any adjustment to that date all you need is a letter making an adjustment to the date.

“You don’t need another 21 days and that letter was written about two weeks ago, when we realised that we couldn’t hold it on Feb. 26

“The moment, the CECPC agreed on March 26 as date for the national convention, that letter was written to INEC. INEC has accepted that letter. So that is long gone; is not an issue,” he explained.

He maintained that the March 26 date for the party’s national convention was not an issue, saying that the date is settled and sacrosanct.

On the current position of Gov. Mai Mala Buni, Ahmed said he was only on medical leave and would resume soon, wondering why it was difficult for some individuals to believe that.

He explained that since the inauguration of the CECPC in June 25, 2020, Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger had always acted whenever Buni was absent.

“It has always been the case, that has never changed, and now we have a convention on March 26, the chairman wrote a letter to go for medical treatment and transmitted power to Bello.

“These are two emergencies, he has a medical emergency that cannot wait for convention. We have a convention that cannot wait for him to be healthy, so one has to leave for other.

“Gov. Bello has been acting appropriately and there is no problem about that,” Ahmed said, wondering why people are making an issue out of the development.

He added that Bello was acting with the full authority of the APC CECPC and the party’s stakeholders, leaders and with the full consent and knowledge of Buni.

“For now we are doing it with the full authority and backing of the law, so there is no ambiguity in this, absolutely none.

“Power by the chairmanship was transmitted to Gov. Bello and he is fully driving it right now, and we are moving towards convention with the speed that is needed,” Ahmed said.

He added that if anyone had issues on decisions taken by the party on its leadership, he could go to the court.

He however appealed to the media to be responsive in their reportage and to always verify information before publishing.

Ahmed stressed that reports on the social media should be taken with a pinch of salt as they could be planted to score a political point, saying that the party’s leadership is open to the media always for clarifications of issues.

  • APC May Postpone National Convention

    APC May Postpone National Convention

    By Joyce Babayeju

There are indications that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may postpone its national convention already scheduled to hold on February 26 by two weeks.

A credible source in the party, who confided on Thursday, said that the party’s leadership is expected to make the announcement this weekend or early next week.

He added that with just nine days to the original date of the convention, there is nothing really on ground to show that the party is ready for the exercise.

According to him, many of the stakeholders in the party, especially the governors believe that the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) should be given some time as it is “currently handling several knotty issues especially the resolution of the crisis that trailed the Ekiti governorship election, Saturday’s primary in Osun State and the recommendation of the National Reconciliation Committee led by Senator Abdullahi Adamu.”

Another reason he stated for the possible shift is the failure of the APC governors, under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), to agree on the ‘Unity List’ which will contain the names of the consensus candidates.

Even though the party announced that the sale of forms would commence on Monday, this week, many aspirants who visited the party’s national secretariat located at Blantyre Street in Wuse 2 area of Abuja were disappointed as nobody attended to them.

“From the feelers we are getting, the convention may be postponed by a minimum of two weeks. Many stakeholders in the party have agreed that it is the best decision to make.

There are lots of knotty issues before the APC caretaker committee which need to be resolved. “One of them is the governorship primaries in Ekiti and Osun states.

That of Ekiti has gone but there are issues that the leadership is trying to resolve especially among the aggrieved aspirants. In Osun, of course, you know it is holding this Saturday and the party is sharply divided into two factions.

“If we are not careful, there may be violence and our party members will be the casualties in Osun.

These are some of the issues before the Buniled caretaker committee and the convention is just less than 10 days from now. “So, it is not as easy as people think, especially those claiming Buni and others want to extend their tenure in office.

The party will soon issue a statement I believe by this weekend. But the general impression in the party now is that it should be postponed by minimum of two weeks”, he said. Imo State governor, Hope Uzodimma, had on Tuesday given an inkling that the event may not go on as scheduled when he said there is nothing wrong if the APC decides to shift its national convention

  • We’re Yet to Zone Party Positions Ahead of National Convention – APC

We’re Yet to Zone Party Positions Ahead of National Convention – APC

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied reports that it had zoned some party positions ahead of its national convention slated for February 26.

The National Secretary of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Senator James Akpanudoedehe, who described the report in some sections of the media (not THISDAY) as untrue, said the committee has yet to take a position on zoning.

But the party leadership has, however, released the convention timetable and programme of activities, even as it has beefed up security around the party’s secretariat.

In the same breath, the immediate past National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Sani Shinkafi, has also joined the APC chairmanship race of the party.

However, the secretary, while giving an update on the state of the party, said, “We are also here to rebuff the fake news going round the social media that we have zoned party offices; we are yet to meet on the issue of zoning.”

The Caretaker Committee at its 19th regular meeting yesterday considered and adopted the timetable/schedule of activities for the convention.

The party said sales of forms to all aspirants vying for national offices would commence on February 14th, while submission of completed forms and accompanying documents at party secretariat was slated on or before February 19.

The APC scheduled the publication of sub-committees for February 19th, while screening of all aspirants vying for national offices would take place between February 20th and 22nd.

Also, the party said the sitting of appeal panels to hear and resolve complaints arising from the screening exercise has been slated for February 23, while accreditation of all statutory and elected delegates to the National Convention was scheduled for February 24th and 25th.

It concluded that the national convention to elect national officers to the National Executive Committee (NEC) would take place on the 26th, while the National Convention Appeal was scheduled for February 28.

Against this backdrop, the APC leadership has beefed up security at the party secretariat in Abuja as the meeting of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (APC) entered the second day.

The Caretaker committee could not reach a logical conclusion on the venue, and modalities of the convention of the party slated for February 26. The increased security presence at party’s headquarters might not be unconnected to the continued power play that forced the committee to fix February 26 for the party’s convention.

Men of the Nigerian Police Fire were stationed at strategic locations along the Blantyre Street of the secretariat.

A party source hinted that the increase security presence was more like a routine exercise, adding that most times, the party also took action based on intels, and that there would be several meetings on the composition of sub-committees for the national convention, hence the need to ensure safety of everyone.

Meanwhile, member of the party from Bayelsa State, Mr. Ambrosini Sambo, has described the alleged zoning of the APC chairmanship to the North West as a plot to destroy the party.

Sambo, who spoke with journalists yesterday in Abuja, said there were plans to impose a chairman on the party through the rumoured zoning to the North-west.

“This spells doom for the party. The decision to impose this candidate from the North-West on the party as the chairman will destabilise the party. Every well-meaning party member should not support this.

“This is the plan of the enemies APC to destroy the party which we fought so hard to build, we will resist this move. The party Chairman is open to other zones to contest,” he said.

He, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in what he described as injustice to the party before it would be too late.

On his party, Shinkafi, who just joined the APC chairmanship race, is believed to being sponsored by the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.

He, however, said the state was not ready to lose the slot considering the fact that a former governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari, who had indicated interest to contest for the position was technically not a member of the ruling party at the moment.

He insisted that during the recent revalidation and registration exercise conducted in the state, Yari and some other party stakeholders in the state refused to participate.

The chairmanship aspirant argued that contrary to perception, he was not in the race to whittle down the influence and chances of Yari, but explained that Yari’s decision to boycott the revalidation and registeration exercise has already disqualified him from the race.

“To me Abdulaziz Yari knows who I am. He’s one of my best friends in those days before he became governor and turned himself into a mini-god. Before me and Matawalle became friends, I have been friends with Yari.

“As far as the national record of APC is concerned, in my text of press briefing, I have made more emphasis on the credible and verifiable membership register. I challenge you and I challenge everyone here to go and meet Abdulazeez Yari and ask him, let him show you his authentic and revalidated membership card as a card carrying member of APC.

“As far as we are concerned, he is already automatically disqualified from this race and based on that I don’t want our state to take risk of not participating, or not taking slot in our great party and I have decided to join the race. You can go and verify from his ward, his name is not on the register and he doesn’t have authentic membership card,” Shinkafi stated.

He said if and when elected as national chairman of the party, he would reposition and reorganise the party based on its philosophy of social democracy, which basically meant people-oriented, membership mobilisation and recruitment and mass based political organisation.

  • Northern PDP Leaders Hold Consensus Meeting Ahead Of National Convention

Northern PDP Leaders Hold Consensus Meeting Ahead Of National Convention

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the North have held a consensus meeting ahead of the party’s forthcoming national convention.

The meeting held on Wednesday at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

It, however, suffered a setback as some stakeholders in the party were reported to have shunned the meeting.

Chairman of the Convention Organising Committee and Adamawa State Governor, Umaru Fintiri, disclosed that the meeting had been adjourned till Thursday to allow for further consultations.

The PDP leaders from the northern region had met to trim down the number of candidates contesting for the office of the national chairman of the PDP, as well as other positions in the forthcoming convention.

Last Thursday, they agreed to set up a 20-man committee that would streamline the number of contestants from each of the zones in the region.

Party leaders in the north-central region had held a similar meeting on Tuesday where Professor Iyorchia Ayu emerged as a consensus candidate for the chairmanship position in the convention to be held later in October.

On September 9, the PDP leadership set up a national zoning committee to zone national offices to be contested by all PDP members.

But the mandate of the committee did not include zoning of the offices of the president, vice president, as well as other executive and legislative offices in the country.

The committee is headed by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, while Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, and Zamfara State Deputy Governor, Mahdi Mohammed, are deputy chairman and secretary respectively.

Three weeks after its inauguration, the committee announced that the next national chairman of the party should come from the North, in line with the Constitution of the party on zoning and rotation of party and national offices in the interest of justice, equity, and fairness.

It stated that the current offices being held by officers in the South should swap places with the offices currently in the North.

The recommendations of the committee were later ratified by the PDP’s National Executive Committee at its meeting held on Thursday last week.

  • PDP Set Date for National Convention

PDP Set Date for National Convention

The national convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will take place on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, 2021.

PDP Governors Forum Chairman, Aminu Tambuwal made the announcement on Friday in Abuja after the 40th national caucus meeting.

The Sokoto Governor said the venue of the event will be determined by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

“We have resolved to submit to the NEC of our party tomorrow, the national working committee’s recommendation for the national convention”, he said.

A team led by former Senate President, David Mark will interface with party members involved in court cases to urge them to withdraw the suits.

Tambuwal appealed to PDP faithful across the country to sheathe their sword and embrace peace.

“Nigeria is waiting for PDP and I believe that we have the capacity to resolve whatever issues we have internally”, he added.
