  • NiMet forecasts more flood for Nigeria in 2023

NiMet forecasts more flood for Nigeria in 2023

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) yesterday asked Nigerians, especially those in the cities and riverine areas, to expect more floods.

Director-General, NiMet, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu, stated this in Abuja at the sidelines of the public release of the 2023 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP).

“Flood is a natural event and with the increase in climate change activities there will be more floods. This is because climate change is due to increasing temperatures. With increased temperature, the atmosphere will be more pregnant with more water vapour.

“That means more rain. This rain will come in high intensity, but short duration. So, the length of the season has been reducing but the intensity and the amount of rain have been increasing. That gives more volume of water in limited time and that is what causes flash floods in cities and riverine areas due to overflowing of water.

On rainfall, he said this year, the rain will “be a little normal but pockets of extreme weather events.

“For states in the North, we’re experiencing dry spell in June and July for a between two to three weeks. The growing season will be normally with pockets of anomalies in parts of Yobe, Solomon, Katsina and some North Central states”.

Nigeria to experience three-day harmattan from Friday – NiMet

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted dust haze weather condition, also known as harmattan, from Friday to Sunday across the country.

NiMet’s weather outlook released in Abuja anticipated prospects of thick dust haze on Friday over the Northern region with visibility of less than 1,000m over Yobe, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa.

“However, the remaining parts of the northern states, the central cities and the southern region should be in moderate dust haze condition with visibility range of 1,000m to 5,000m.

“Localised visibility of less than 1,000m is expected over parts of Kwara and Oyo States within the forecast period,” it said.

According to NiMet, thick dust haze with horizontal visibility of less than 1,000m is expected over Kano, Katsina, Jigawa and Yobe on Saturday.

The agency envisaged the rest of the northern states, the North-Central and southern region of the country to be in moderate dust haze condition with horizontal visibility range of 1,000m to 5,000m throughout the forecast period.

“For Sunday, slight improvement in horizontal visibility is expected over the entire country with moderate dust haze condition in the range of 1, 000 to 5, 000m is expected over the country within the forecast period.

”The public is advised to take necessary precautions due to dust particles presently in suspension over the atmosphere.

“Individuals with respiratory ailments are to protect themselves as the current dusty weather condition is adverse to their health.

  • We’re Going to Experience More Flood in Other States -NiMet

We’re Going to Experience More Flood in Other States -NiMet

The NiMet DG said in the coming days, there would be high intensity rains and coupled with the dams being let open, there will be more floods.

Some states are experiencing huge flooding, reminiscent of the 2012 floods. The latest floods has led to loss of lives and properties worth billions of naira.

“Remember, we issued the forecast in February and we followed up with the monthly updates that we’re going to have above normal rainfall in most part of the country. So in terms of the rainfall induced floods, we’ve seen the peak but remember we told you that this rainwater gets collected into the reservoirs and dams, and whenever they are filled, it gets spilled. So, on the13th of September, the Lagbo Dam was released. And also Kainji and Shiroro dams were also were released. So what we’re witnessing now is riverine flooding” Prof. Matazu explained.

“And from the information we’re getting from NIHSA we’re going to see more floods. And now the rain is concentrating on the North Central and the southern states. So that will be a combination of short duration, high intensity rain, which riverine flooding. So we’re going to see more of these floods in the north central states as we are seeing in Kogi and also south eastern and southwestern states as we are beginning to see in a number of parts of South West.”

He further noted that water-associated risks are going to intensify in the coming years as the full weight of climate change begin to bear on our earth.

“In Africa, water-related hazards such as flood, drought etc has become a major cause of food insecurity, strains on livelihoods, health risks and conflicts in many parts of the continent.”

The DG NIHSA said the flood that has happened was primarily caused by rainfall and not the released dams.

He also noted that coupled with the fact that some people had built on flood plains, and with the rise in water levels in the River Niger and Benue, the floods became inevitable.

Alan Jenkins, the Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, commended NiMet for being first agency in the world to apply the HydroSOS.
