Safety Engineers sue for collaboration in occupational safety
By Ogenyi Ogenyi, UyoNational Chairman of the Nigeroian Institution of Safety Engineers, NISafetyE, Engr Akaninyene Ekong has called for a continuous collaborative approach on matters of safety for National Development while emphasizing the special competencies of Safety Engineers.Ekong was speaking at the Workshop of the Draft Review and Validation of Nigeria Country Profile on Occupational Safety and Health, organized by the International Labour Organization and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja.The National Chairman who.led a team of Safety Engineers to the workshop further stated that the Approved Code of Practice for Construction Safety is the first technical document domesticated and issued as a guidance for Construction Operations in NigeriaEkong therefore invited all to the overview presentation of the Approved Code of Practice in Construction Safety at the International Safety Engineering Conference holding in Uyo from October 26-28 2023.In her address at the conference, Minister of State,Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Mrs Nkeiruka Onyejeocha said the FG remained passionate about the protection of the labour force and the revitalization of the economy for improved well-being of Nigerians hence this collaboration with ILO meant to develope a robust and comprehensive National Profile on Occupational Safety and Health.Onyejiocha said the Profile would stimulate effective management of workplace Safety and Health in Nigeria and enhance economic growth of the nation, in line with Priority Three (3) of the Administration’s Development Agenda.The Minister further said that the Nigerian Government has already ratified ILO convention 187 on Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health, which aims to promote a preventive safety and health culture at the national level.This according to her has been an important step towards ensuring safe working environments nationwide through the activities of the Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.The Minister maintained that the review of the National Occupational Safety and Health Profile would ensure that the Occupational Safety and Health Management System is effective in preventing and mitigating the impact of workplace accidents, injuries, illnesses, dangerous occurrences, disasters and deaths.Stakeholders at the workshop agreed that the workshop would identify new tools for effective Occupational Safety and Health Management through the review and validation of the 2016 Nigeria Country Profile on Occupational Safety and Health.They however agreed that this would require a coordinated response whilst highlighting the roles and responsibilities of Stakeholders like the Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE) and Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) thus encouraging inter-ministerial and inter-agency involvement in Occupational Safety and Health.The framework also considered the Legislative Framework, Occupational Safety and Health Technical Standards such as Codes of Practice as issued by NISafetyE for Construction Safety, Process Safety and Food Safety. -
NISafetyE gets Codes of Practice on Construction Safety

The Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE) has announved the successful completion of the development of the Institution’s Approved Codes and Standards on Construction Safety
Already, NISafetyE National Chairman, Engr. Dr. Akaninyene Ekong has submitted the codes to the National President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Engr Tasiu Gidari-Wudil who would in turn pass the document to the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN for implementation.
Ekong in a statement in Uyo weekend while announcing the successful completion of the draft code disclosed that the National Executive Committee of the Institute has been working with a team of experts for some months to develop the Approved Codes of Practice for various aspects of Safety Engineering practise in Nigeria.
According to Ekong, the focus of NISafetyE on construction safety as a starting point, was due to the spate of incidents in the Construction Industry and frequency of top events, that left distasteful outcomes, avoidable losses and unsavoury experiences; in the activities of organisations and engineering practitioners.
The statement said the document from licensed Nigerian Safety Engineers would comprehensively provide guidance at work on Managing Health and Safety in Construction.
“I am happy to announce to us that the NISafetyE Approved Code of Practice for Construction Safety has been developed, validated by the subject matter experts, and submitted to the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil, FNSE, FNISafetyE, at the National Engineering Centre, Abuja, on May 26, 2023.
“This is to the Glory of God alone and the use of man, as we continue to work hard and smart, building a better society to live in.
“We thank all our contributors for their time, talents and treasures, invested in this project, and appreciate all our members too, for their labour of love, committment and continual support.
“The NSE will have the document passed on to COREN for implementation and we are confident its provisions will bring about a safe and conducive working environment for all, when the guidelines are put in use.” It concluded.

NISafetyE warns of impending erosion disaster in A’Ibom

The Nigerian Institution of Safety Engineers (NISafetyE) has warmed relevant agencies of government of impending gully erosion disaster in many parts of Eket Local Council of A’Ibom.
NISafetyE President, Engr Akaninyene Ekong gave the warning in Eket yesterday when he led a delegation of experts from the Institution on an on the spot assessment of roads affected by gully erosion in the oil city.
Ekong while giving an assessment of the state of the roads including Isong Udoito Street ,Umana Ndon ,Mkpok streets observed that, gully erosion has collapsed both sides of the roads, making it unsafe for motorists and passers-by with many properties already destroyed.
He ststed that the structural integrity of the culverts and roads have been seriously compromised warning that if urgent intervention is not taken to check mate the situation more properties would be swept away by gully erosion.
“Already, the menace of this gully erosion has rendered many homeless with properties destroyed. As rainy season begins, the situation is worsening as some part of the canal embankment has caved in.
“Pedestrian, motorist and residents within the area are at risk as the roads can be washed away at any time especially with the onset of the heavy rains.” He said.
The NISafetyE Boss stated that the NISafetyE is a division established by the Nigerian Society of Engineers with a mandate to prevent failures in Engineered Systems such as industrial process upset , roads ,buildings, bridges collapse , transportation through the adherence to Safety/Engineering Codes and Standards to ensure both Industrial and Public Safety.
“As an institution, our immediate intervention and role on this situation is to firstly, communicate the hazard to the public/ motorist plying this road about the gully erosion danger ahead and also call on the State Ministry of Environment , the Eket Local Government Council Chairman for urgent intervention by closing the affected roads until repairs are made.” He said.
Ekong however stated that the NISafetyE has strategically positioned physical barriers that would communicate the gully erosion danger ahead and called for urgent action by government to prevent deaths in the area adding that, “we must not wait for people to die before action is taken.”

Emir of Kano lauds incoming NISafetyE Boss

The Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero has commended the courage and foresight of the incoming National Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Safety Engineers, NISafetyE Engr Akaninyene Ekong in repositioning the Institution.
Bayero who made the call when he received Ekong and his delegation from the Kano Chapter of the NISafetyE in his palace in Kano however called for increased involvement of Safety Engineers in projects.
‘You are leading the Institution today not because you are the most senior or brilliant Engineer, but because you were chosen by God.
I congratulate you on your appointment as the National Chairman NISafetyE.“I will ensure Northern Safety Engineers are incoporated in your institution as this will help in developing Safety competency through your training programs and expanding socio cultural cooperation and i do hope that your institution will promote unity amongst members’. Bayero said.
The Emir opined that if Safety Engineers fail to do their duties it would have serious consequences as seen in engineering related failures where Safety Engineers where not consulted.
He pleaded that safety is needed in Kano as it is an Industrial Hub and assured Engr Ekong of his support .
“I have friends in Uyo and I request that you extend my regards to them and the Northern Community back in Akwa Ibom. I wish you journey mercies to your base.”
Ekong had earlier thanked the Emir for his kindness in accepting to see him and his delegation at a very short notice and prayed for the Emir’s health safety and for his dynasty.
He emphasized that he has come to pay respect to him as the Emir of Kano and as a national traditional leader.

Ekong stated that the professional engineering body would not be truly national without Engineers from the north as members, to foster unity of purpose , development and peace.
“We want to expand the frontiers of Safety Engineering practice and NISafetyE to the North hence our consideration of Kano State which is a Commercial/Industrial hub as a Chapter of NISafetyE.
“The nature of Kano with high level Commerce and Industrial processes requires a Safety Commission to regulate, monitor and ensure compliance to Safety standards. I am seeking for your blessings as I work towards establishing Chapters of the institution in the North.
“i humbly request that His Royal Highness grace my investiture and swearing in ceremony on the 5th of February 2022 in Uyo Akwa Ibom State as the Royal Father of the Day.” He said.
