  • Abia CP flays rumour he’s plotting to scuttle burial of Kanu’s parents

Abia CP flays rumour he’s plotting to scuttle burial of Kanu’s parents

The police command in Abia has flayed the rumour that it is plotting to scuttle the burial of the parents of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Kanu’s mother, Sally, and father, Eze Israel Kanu, the Traditional Ruler of Afaraukwu Ibeku, died in August and December 2019, respectively.
They will be buried in their country home in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia on Friday.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Ene Okon, has repeatedly warned IPOB to steer clear from the burial.
Okon told newsmen in Umuahia that Federal Government had proscribed IPOB and that he would not fold his arm and watch the organisation to operate in the state.
He said that the police would disrupt the burial, “if IPOB flag, insignia or any form of identification of the organisation if seen at the burial”.
However, in a statement made available to NAN in Umuahia on Tuesday, the command’s spokesman, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, urged the public to “disregard the rumour” that the police commissioner was plotting to scuttle the burial.
Ogbonna stated, “the Commissioner of Police urges the public to disregard the rumour making the rounds that he wants to scuttle the burial.
“On the contrary, he has the good intention to provide security for lives and property of the people during the burial.”
He further stated that the presence of security operatives “in and around the community should not be seen as a threat but a proactive measure to prevent the infiltration of miscreants and hoodlums into the community” to foment trouble and truncate the burial.
He stated that the command had been inundated with intelligence “that miscreants disguising as IPOB members intend to hijack the burial, in solidarity with its leader.”
According to the statement, the police boss assured residents and sympathisers that the command would provide adequate security for lives and property during and after the burial.
He further warned IPOB “to steer clear from the environment”, saying that the command “will not fold its arm and watch their unlawful activities.”
Meanwhile, palpable fear and tension have enveloped the quiet community as residents fear a possible police/IPOB clash during the burial, forcing some to relocate to other parts of Umuahia. (NAN)

Abia CP warns IPOB to steer clear from burial of Kanu’s parents

The Abia police command on Monday warned the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to steer clear from the burial of Eze Israel Kanu and his wife, Sally, both parents of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ene Okon, who gave the warning in an interview with newsmen in Umuahia, said that the command would disrupt the funeral should IPOB attend the ceremony.
Federal Government in September 2017 proscribed IPOB, following an order of a Federal High Court, Abuja, declaring the group as a terrorist organisation.
He said that the command had made its position clear to the Traditional Prime Minister of Afara-Ukwu Ancient Kingdom, the community of the decessed.
He said that he would not fold his hands and watch a proscribed group operate in the state.
“If they fail to adhere to what we have told them, it means they do not want the burial to go on smoothly because we are going to scatter the place.
“IPOB is proscribed by the federal government and I, as the commissioner of police in Abia, cannot sit here and allow any proscribed group to operate anywhere in this state.
“I am saying this again for emphasis that there is no way police will allow a proscribed group to participate in the burial,” Okon said.
According to him, the command will not take anything for granted, considering the abundant intelligence on threat by IPOB.
He said that members of the group were free to attend the burial as individuals and sympathisers like other members of society.
The police chief, however, warned that the command would react, “if IPOB flag, insignia or any form of identification of the organisation if seen at the burial”.
Kanu escaped from Nigeria, after the group was proscribed as a terrorist organisation.
Kanu’s mother reportedly died in a German hospital in August, 2019, while his father died in December.
They will be buried on Friday, February 14 in their country home in Afaraukwu Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state. (NAN)
