2023: Wike, Other PDP Govs Meet in Enugu

Ahead of the February 2023 presidential elections, five Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday, met in Enugu State.

The Governors are: Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Okezie Ikeazu of Abia State and the host Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

According to the insider, the five governors were moved to back Peter Obi’s candidacy because they are not comfortable with the PDP flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.

Reports have it that the decision of the governors may not be unconnected to the crisis rocking the main opposition party.

The crisis, which was birthed by the face-off between Wike and the former vice president, had degenerated despite efforts by party stakeholders to quell the cold war.

You’re a failure, Can’t Enter Aso Rock Again – Wike Mocks Amaechi

Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, has described Rotimi Amaechi, his predecessor, as a “total failure”.

Wike made the comment on Monday at the inauguration of a construction project in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

On Saturday, Amaechi while attending the burial of Alabo Graham-Douglas, a former minister, in Akuku Toru LGA of the state, criticised the absence of Wike.

“Indeed going by the contributions he (Graham-Douglas) made to the state, I was thinking that the state would take responsibility for everything concerning Alabo. You don’t need to be governor to be recognised,” the former minister of transportation said.

Responding on Monday, Wike denied that the late elder statesman was abandoned.

The governor said his administration handled the medical expenses of Graham-Douglas while he was sick, adding that Amaechi is only interested in honouring the dead.

He said: “I’m so disappointed that the former minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, will come to this state to talk about this government not giving late Alabo Graham-Douglas a state burial. It’s unfortunate. I ask him: when Alabo was sick, where were you?

“This state government committed so much amount of money to make sure Alabo survived. I want to challenge anybody; we did not spend less than N50,000,000 to make sure our elder statesman survived. It is the survival we want. We wanted him to be alive.”

Wike alleged that Amaechi refused to carry out Graham-Douglas’ request when he was still in office.

Wike said: “But let me ask you: Amaechi when Alabo was alive, he told you to honour him by elevating the stool of Amalabo. When he was alive, he said please Mr Governor, honour me; he (Amaechi) did not do it. So who is the man who loved Alabo?

“Now because the man is dead, you now went there because the man is dead. I know why you went there, it’s because you have interest. Everybody knows.

“I thought some people should know that there are limitations to everything. If you didn’t say what you said on Saturday, I wouldn’t have exposed you. People didn’t know you have an interest everywhere.

“Tell Rivers people, as a minister of transportation, what did you do for your people? Show Rivers people what you did for them. When I was a minister, a junior minister for that matter, I brought Faculty of Law, University of Port Harcourt.

“So please, this should be your last time to open your mouth and talk about this state because you’re a total failure as far as this state is concerned. Even what is supposed to come to us, you blocked it but we didn’t bother. You think you’ll not finish as a minister, you have left and yet you can’t even enter the villa now.

“All these period you intimidated the people with police is over. When you used to tell them the president is angry with you. Now go and tell them, they will ask you which president are you seeing. You’re seeing no president.

“So don’t distract us again, if you distract us, I’ll say more things that when Nigerians see you, they will pour you hot water. Your atrocities are too much, so be careful.”

PDP’s glorious days are coming, Wike assures

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the time of reckoning is coming for those who continue to insist that they can take the national leadership in the Peoples Democratic Party.

The governor maintained that nobody can silence him from speaking against such injustice and demanding that the right thing be done.

Wike spoke at the inauguration of the Emohua campus of Rivers State University and the flag-off of staff quarters, performed by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday.

The governor said such persons would account for every wrong thing that they have done when the day of reckoning comes.

He said, “That is why I am telling the people there, look, it cannot work. You can’t take everything. If you take everything, it will purge you. So you better do the right thing now.

“Don’t sit there and think that you can muscle me and you can do everything; you can manipulate anything. You can think you have the number to make sure you take everything, but the time is coming when you will account for it.”

He insisted that the delivery of quality projects by him and his colleague governors will serve the PDP well in their respective states.

According to him, it will be erroneous for the PDP states that have failed to provide good governance to solicit votes from the electorate.

Performing the inauguration of the campus and flagging off of the staff quarters, Makinde made a veiled reference to the recent statement credited to the national chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, who said those calling for his resignation were still children when he and others were founding the party.

He said, “If children are doing all of these, I think what Nigeria needs are children. So, my brother Wike, you can be assured that Nigeria appreciates you.

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar met with Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting was held behind closed doors and neither party officially confirmed it held.

The meeting reportedly held at the residence of Professor Jerry Gana, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees.

The PDP board on Wednesday had resolved to reconcile both parties ahead of the 2023 general elections,

Wike is expected to back Atiku in the 2023 general elections but indications have emerged that the Rivers State Governor is unhappy after being passed over for the party’s vice presidential ticket.

Atiku has promised to united the party ahead of the presidential poll next year.

2023: PDP BoT Plans to Reconcile Wike, Atiku as Election Draws Closer

In an effort to reconcile the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 Presidential candidate, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike the Board of Trustees (BoT) has set up a committee of all.

Recall that Atiku and Wike’s camp have been in a cold war since the party’s primaries and the unveiling of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as the presidential candidate’s running mate.

Briefing journalists at the end of the BoT meeting which lasted for about 4 hours in Abuja, former lawmaker, Senator Abdul Ningi said the committee is expected to interface between the warring camps.

He said, “we have set up in this meeting committee of the BoT to be able to interface between warring factions, particularly the acrimony that is taking place between the presidential candidate and Governor Wike.”

Ningi said the committee is also expected to reconcile other conflicts that are taking place in the party across the country.

“The committee is the committee of the whole, that means every other BoT member is a member of the committee. I cannot tell you the grievances and the time frame,” he started.

On whether the call for the resignation of the PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu was discussed at the BoT meeting, Ningi said: “we have not even discussed any issue of anybody stepping down. What we discussed is what I told you”.

Wike, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is expected to back his party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar but speculations have emerged that the Rivers State Governor is unhappy after being passed over for the vice presidential ticket.

APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was said to have met with Wike in France last week but the Tinubu media office has denied such a meeting ever took place.

Atiku, PDP Governors, Others To Visit Wike In Reconciliatory Move

The Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set up a reconciliatory committee to meet with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State over the fallout of the party’s presidential primary and crisis trailing the nomination of a running mate.

The committee is to be headed by the party’s presidential candidate and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and has 13 PDP governors as members.

Chairman of the party’s BOT, Senator Walid Jibril, made the announcement in a statement on Sunday, saying the visit to Governor Wike would take place immediately after Atiku and the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, return to the country from their vacation abroad.

“I have noted with a great concern and great sense of feeling on the various recent comments coming from some of our PDP members and some prominent Nigerians on the choice of Chief Okowa, the Governor of Delta State as the vice-presidential candidate by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of our Party PDP – the biggest party not only in Nigeria but the whole of Africa,” he said.

“All the comments and various submissions are very normal in any political setup in Nigeria today with PDP being the strongest and most prominent party that has all potential to form government in 2023.”

According to the BOT chairman, the reconciliatory committee will also comprise the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, as well as Ayu and members of the PDP National Working Committee.

Others include former PDP governors and ministers, as well as party elders from various zones and states in the country.

Senator Jibrin described Governor Wike as a very responsible and obedient PDP member who assisted tremendously in building the party to its present status.

Ahead of the reconciliatory meeting with the governor, he appealed to party members in Rivers not to leave the party and shun comments aimed at reducing and running down the party.

“We must come back to our senses by all our members and all most responsible and respectful Nigerians by giving total support to the party to enable it to form government by holding all political positions in Nigeria in 2023,” the BOT chairman said.

“We must come together and unite ourselves as earlier established by our founding fathers. We should, therefore, shun any bad comment aimed at dividing us. We must be ready to forgive ourselves, thereby encouraging Nigerians to continue supporting us and our party.

“It is my strong appeal to all current and former governors and former Presidents of Nigeria not to add more fuel to the fire but to always try to quench the fire from spreading. May I say it loud that we commend all our current PDP governors for their greatest assistance to the party always.”

Also present at the meeting was former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

Other political players such as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, have visited Mr Wike in the past few days.

Buhari will set Nigeria on fire —Wike cries out

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to prove to Nigerians that he is ready to do the people’s requests.

The governor said the President will set the country ‘on fire’ by not implementing some of the requests voiced out by leaders during the recent discussions with the presidential delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari.

The PUNCH had reported that Gambari led ministers and federal lawmakers to meetings with leaders of the six geopolitical zones as a way of addressing concerns raised in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests.

Gambari and the presidential delegation had met with governors and leaders of the South-South geopolitical zone in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Tuesday.

At the meeting, the South-South leaders including the Rivers State governor demanded the restructuring of the country in line with the principle of true federalism, saying it will guarantee peace, security and stability in the country.

Giving an update on the meeting on Thursday morning, Wike said the President still has time to implement the will of the people and etch a legacy for himself.

The governor spoke today on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme monitored by The PUNCH.

He said, “I am not a pessimist. I don’t believe that because you didn’t do what you agreed to do yesterday, therefore, you will not do what you agree to do today. Even if he (Buhari) has not done what he told Nigerians he would do, he can say, look, I promised Nigerians yesterday, I didn’t do that and that is affecting my integrity and so, for people who know me, I will implement what I have said.

“People have raised the issue that they don’t think anything will come out of the dialogues. I don’t agree with them. I believe that if the President does not do it, given the opportunity he has now, he will be putting Nigeria on fire.”

Continuing, Wike said political will to implement what the people want is key in governance.

According to him, the President has to show leadership by listening to Nigerians and by implementing the people’s requests.

“He may not necessarily implement everything the people may want but let the people see the concrete evidence that under President Buhari, he has been able to implement one, two, three, four demands by the people.

“If he (Buhari) doesn’t take this opportunity now to implement some of these requests, I don’t think it will be very good for Nigerians and for his legacy,” the governor added.

2023: Gov Wike reveals main reasons Umahi defected to APC

Rivers Sate governor, Nyesom Wike has explained reasons Ebonyi state governor and chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum (SGF), Dave Umahi defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Wike said his Ebonyi counterpart left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his presidential ambition.

Gov Umahi left PDP for APC in what has left a huge vacuum in the PDP considering the fact that he is the chairman of the Southeast Governors Forum (SGF) .

Reacting to this, Wike said Umahi left the party, not because injustice was meted to the southeast but because of his personal presidential bid.

He said that his defection did not come to PDP members as a surprise because the Ebonyi governor was already building a political romance with the ruling party over time. Governor Wike told Umahi to retrace the statement that he left PDP because of the injustice against the southeast region by the opposition party, saying he will not allow his “friend” to “blackmail and tell lies to people.”

“My friend, Umahi wants to be president. There is no problem with that. You have a right to be president. Nobody can stop you.”

According to him, the Ebonyi governor is an educated man who is serving his second term as governor and is therefore qualified to say he wants to be Nigeria’s president.

Meanwhile, just days after Governor Umahi informed the PDP of his plan to leave for the APC, one of his commissioners resigned. Ebonyi commissioner for intergovernmental affairs, Lazarus Ogbee, announced his resignation in a letter to the governor.

Another person who tendered his resignation was state’s APC publicity secretary, Chika Nwoba. Revealing the reason for his action, he said he cannot work with Umahi. He expressed gratitude to the APC and its leaders for finding him worthy to be elected to the position in 2018, at the age of 27.
