BREAKING: Ogun Govt Suspends Commissioner Over Alleged Sexual Harassment

The Ogun State government has suspended the Commissioner for Environment, Abiodun Abudu-Balogun.

Mr Abudu-Balogun was suspended from office over an allegation of sexual harassment of a 16-year-old girl identified as Barakat Mayowa Melojuekun.

In a statement issued on Sunday issued in Abeokuta, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, announced the suspension of the commissioner pending the conclusion of an independent investigation into the allegation.

He explained that the state government decided to suspend Abudu-Balogun to enable him to cooperate fully with the independent investigation being carried out by the police.

“Whilst taking cognisance of the principle of a suspect being presumed innocent until proven guilty and the public statement issued by Honourable Abudu-Balogun denying the allegation, as a government with zero tolerance for gender-based violence and indeed any criminality, the suspension is a further demonstration of the commitment of Dapo Abiodun administration to fairness, equity, justice and the rule of law, no matter who is involved,” the statement read.

Talabi assured the residents that the stated government would do everything necessary to ensure that justice was served in the case.

He disclosed that the suspended commissioner has been directed to hand over to the Permanent Secretary at the State Ministry of Environment.

Speaking during the presentation, the Bishop of Remo Diocese, Archbishop Olusina Fape, said it had become imperative for the church to support the government with its widow’s mite.

Fape, who led a delegation of Bishops to the Governor’s office on Friday, said the “token contribution” is from the 13 Dioceses in Ogun and Lagos states under the Province of Lagos.

The Archbishop was accompanied by the Bishops Emmanuel Adekunle of Egba, Samuel Ogundeji  of Egba-West and Babatunde Ogunbanwo of Ijebu-Southwest Dioceses.

Reading a letter that was presented to the state government the delegation said:

“Whatever touches our people, as a religious body, equally touches us.

“And when we look at what the government of Ogun State has done under the leadership of Gov. Dapo Abiodun, in our own little way, we decided to identify with our state.

“And then we have decided to show our identification in a practical way, that what we are going through as a state, not only as a state but even within community and the nation, Nigeria is good.

“It is on that note that we have come to make our presentation.

“Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic a few weeks ago, we have watched and noticed your noble efforts to combat this dreadful disease.

“All your proactive measures are highly commendable and we are very proud of the achievements so far.

“So, on behalf of the bishops, clergy and laity of the entire Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), it’s not how big it is but we still want to tell you we identify with you.

“If we have more we would do more. But we just want to show our own concern that we identify with you in this matter.

“So, we are making a humble donation of N5 million to support your good efforts in combating this dreadful disease.

“No matter how little it is, we believe you will be able to channel it towards achieving what you feel is necessary.

“The money has been transferred direct to Ogun State COVID-19 Fund at Zenith Bank account 1017227484, through Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Mobolaji Bank Anthony branch, Ikeja, Lagos as contained in a letter which will be presented to you.

“It is our prayer that the Good Lord will grant unto you the wisdom to be able to lead the good people of Ogun State so that at the end of this pandemic, we will be numbered.

“None of the members of our family will be missing”.

Responding on behalf of the state, the Deputy Governor, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, thanked the church for the support offered the state towards fighting the Coronavirus pandemic.

She said apart from the monetary donation, the church should also support the country and the state government with prayers in order to overcome the viral disease.

Present at the occasion were Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi and the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr Salisu Shuaib.

COVID-19: Students want Ogun Govt. to screen people entering Nigeria from border communities

Abeokuta,  March 19,  2020 The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) has called on the state government to urgently deploy health officers with screening  kits at the  various  ports of entry into Nigeria from Benin Republic.

They said that this was to control the coronavirus pandemic from spreading into Ogun and the country through its  border towns with Benin Republic.

The National President of the association, Mr Oluwagbemileke Ogunrombi, stated this in a statement he issued in Abeokuta on Thursday.

He said that the call was necessitated by the report of the first case of Coronavirus outbreak  in Benin Republic, a neighbouring country that shares borders with Nigeria through Ogun.

“To avert a major health crisis in the state, we call on the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, to immediately place hospitals and health centres in border communities in state on the alert.

“The health workers in the border communities must also be on the lookout for people with symptoms of the disease.

“We call on the state government, through the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to urgently deploy health officers in ports of entry to test people entering into the country for Coronavirus.

“We are aware of the fact that Ogun state is the gateway into the country from the neighbouring Benin Republic.

“Therefore, we are imploring the state to be more proactive in preventing the virus from finding its way into Nigeria from foreigners that will be entering Nigeria through the land borders.’’

He also implored the traditional rulers, leaders and the entire residents of border communities in Ogun to  be on the alert and report any suspected cases to the appropriate authority.

The students’ leader commended the state government for its quick response to the first case of Coronavirus in the state.

He said that the case would have escalated but for the prompt attention of the state government.

Ogunrombi also advised the state government to close all schools across the state for a period of time to avoid the spread of the disease.
