Lockdown: FRSC records 57 crashes, 20 deaths in Lagos, Ogun

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says it recorded 57 road crashes with 20 deaths in Ogun and Lagos States in the four weeks of COVID-19 lockdown.

Mr Samuel Obayemi, FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer in-charge of the two states, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

Obayemi, an Assistant Corps Marshal, said that the crashes occurred within the four weeks of the lockdown in Lagos State and three weeks of lockdown in Ogun.

“The Lockdown directive which was announced by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, on 29th March was enforced by FRSC Operatives in Zone 2 which comprises of Lagos and Ogun States.

“Although the enforcement started at different dates with Lagos starting first because there was an already existing lockdown directive by the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while lockdown in Ogun State commenced on April 4, 2020.

“The goal of the Operation was to enforce the directive on restriction of movement in both states.

“An analysis of the data of the Enforcement Operation carried out so far in the zone showed that we have a total of 57 road traffic crashes with only 10 fatal where 20 lives were lost,” Obayemi said.

The FRSC boss said that the 10 fatal accidents that claimed 20 lives occured along Ojota, Lekki, Ibeju, Apapa, Epe, Mowe, Ogere, Sagamu and Itori areas of the zone.

According to him, the corps stopped a total of 33, 252 vehicles from which a total of 27, 659 were cautioned and allowed to go free.

He said that 377 vehicles were impounded and booked, while 235 vehicles were impounded but not booked.

Obayemi said that the FRSC operatives turned back a total of 5,030 vehicles to their originating places and arrested 53 for overloading.

“From the data, it can be observed that the number of bookings made is just a handful compared to the total number of vehicles stopped.

“This can be attributed to a relatively appreciable level of compliance of motorists to the social distancing order and also because the Operatives have not been focused on booking except for extreme cases.”

Obayemi said that despite the lockdown that had reduced the flow of vehicles along major highways in the zone, the few road traffic crashes recorded were avoidable.

NGO lauds FG’s partial lockdown in Lagos, FCT, Ogun

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Centre for Change, has hailed the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to gradually ease the lockdown in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Lagos and Ogun States.

Okei-Odumakin, who gave the commendation on Tuesday in Lagos, said the president’s decision was a welcome development as it was harmful to permanently shut down those economic centres indefinitely.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president in a nationwide broadcast extended the lockdown imposed on FCT, Lagos and Ogun, said it would be eased from May 4.

“The gradual ease should be combined with strict observance of safety measures like wearing of masks, washing of hands and social/physical distancing.

“The fumigation of public places must also continue to keep the spread of the pandemic very low.

“Provision of support to the most vulnerable should continue as the impact of the lockdown would still weigh heavily on the poor,” she said in a statement.

Okei-Odumakin said the president’s warning to security operatives on human rights abuses should be strictly enforced.

She noted that it was embarrassing to the country that its security forces were in competition with Coronavirus on who would kill more Nigerians.

The NGO’s president said it might not be out of tune to ask government to mobilise and empower the universities, polytechnics, and research institutes to join the search for a vaccine that would serve as cure for the virus.

“Also in line with what other countries are doing, including African countries, our scientists and researchers should be mobilised.

“They should be encouraged to invent ventilators, test kits and such other equipment that are hard to come by internationally since every country is fighting tooth and nail to cope with the pandemic.

“Finally, government must keep abreast of latest developments around the world in combating the pandemic,” she said.

Okei-Odumakin said special attention must now be focused on practices, sects, and groups that were deliberately flouting COVID-19 protocols, thereby encouraging community transmission of the virus.

She said this was the major reason why the figures of the infected were on the increase right now.

According to her, it must be stated quite clearly that such ignorance and or irresponsible behaviour endangers everyone.

Okei-Odumakin said it would also ensure Nigerians remained in the stranglehold of the virus for a very long time to come, with dire consequences on the health and safety of Nigerians as well as the quick recovery of the economy.

It has an area of 521 km² and a population of more than 500,000 people, according to the 2006 census.

For many years, the area, which shares boundary with Lagos, has suffered various neglects, including insecurity.

Recently, a hash tag Ogun unrest, was created on social media, to draw public attention to the plight of residents of the area.

Though, a lot of misinformation were detected on the thread, the fact remains that there are group of boys who were threats to the peace of the neighbourhood.

Broken bottles, damaged tiles and bornfire were seen on the streets of the communities in Lagos, sharing boundary with Ifo local government Area.

Most affected areas are Ifako-Ijaiye, Agbado crossing, Oke-Aro, Akute, Olambe, Ijoko, Ogbaayo, Ajegunle Iroko among others.

These communities, which play host to several factories, seem not safe for many reaidents who live here.

Our Crew met with Adunni Osundairo, who narrated how her home was invaded by some hoodlums. She was devasted by the incident.

” I believe there is an increased number of robbery attacks, because of the lockdown. Government should increase the stimulus package we can’t sleep anymore”

Another victim of the robbery incident, who profers name not mentioned, said: “They walk in groups, as much as 30 to 50 boys at the same time. They have been robbing the community before now. It started at about 5 months ago. They are underaged boys, between 14 and 20 years old. For more than 3 days, we have been staying awake between 7pm to 6am.”

Though, people living in the communities are scared of being robbed or abused, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, during a patrol in the area, assured residents of maximum security.

As residents of Ifo local government area await more attention from Lagos and Ogun state governments, there is the need for urgent intervention in the security situation of the area.

But for safety of people around the border communities to be guaranteed, the sit-at-home order must be adhered to, as movement especially at night, might be dangerous.

COVID-19 lockdown: Compliance in Ogun encouraging – FRSC

Mr Clement Oladele,  FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, disclosed this in an interview with Our correspondents in Abeokuta on Wednesday.

Oladele noted that it was important for the people to obey government directives,  saying it remained the best way to avoid the spread of the virus.
He said that the only concern might be when the lockdown enters  into the 10th or 12th day,  saying people may start feeling restless and tired of staying at home.
Oladele, however,  pleaded with the people not to relent in compliance as doing otherwise could wipe away all the earlier sacrifices of staying at home since the commencement of the lockdown order.
“Being disciplined throughout this period will make everybody comply willingly,  without enforcement by the security agencies, this is key to making us defeat the pandemic and return to living our normal lives.
“The citizens should be extra vigilant and report those few lawless members of our community that may attempt to flout the presidential directive on COVID – 19 restriction order.
“The more we remain silent to such unlawful acts , the more, we the law abiding citizen will  be exposing ourselves to avoidable risks from COVID-19 pandemic .
“The lockdown order , though may be denying us our freedom , but it is a necessary sacrifice which is  similar to what a pregnant woman in labour endures during childbirth but to later get relieved after successful birth of the child,” he said.
Oladele  commended all FRSC Officers and Marshals working alongside other security agencies, toiling day and night to enforce the presidential directive.
