    Oyo Govt. to Demolish Illegal Properties in Akanran

    The Oyo State Government will soon commence the demolition of illegal properties and structures built on government land in Akanran, Ona-Ara Local government.

    This was as the Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo warned encroachers to vacate Government Land with immediate effect.

    The Ministry of lands helmsman hinted that it has been observed that a lot of people in the state have encroached on Government lands, and this is disturbing the masterplan of the state.

    Mr. Akin Funmilayo stated that the Omituntun 2.0 agenda will not leave any stone unturned in making Oyo State a good place to live in.

    He added that the government properties illegally built upon in Akanran is the proposed land for the State Games Village.

    According to the Commissioner, the decision of demolition by the government brings an end to the long-awaited realization of the proposed game village project, which has been in the pipeline since 25 years ago.

    Mr. Akin Funmilayo explained further that most occupants and developers claiming ownership of the land have fake documents, while adding that anyone who refuses to vacate the government land within the stipulated period will be forcefully evicted by law.

    He called on residents of the state to visit the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development for any enquiry regarding land issues before purchasing any land.

    In another development, the Oyo State Government has promised partnership with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) for the speedy completion of the Ibadan Inland Dry Port project.

    The Commissioner for Trades, Investment, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Ademola Ojo, stated this while playing host to the management of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Southwest Zone led by Mr. Moses Fadipe in his Office, at the Secretariat, Ibadan.

    The commissioner assured the council that the ministry will work assiduously to find solutions to anything that may hamper the project and give maximum support for the completion of the project.

    He explained that when completed, the project will boost the State’s economy, adding that it is very important to the present administration.

    He said, “State government is really interested in the completion of the project. We are assuring you of the support and cooperation of the Ministry and more importantly, personally eager to see the first cargo being lifted from the dry port”.

    Oyo Commences Operation At New Model Smart School, As UBEC Hands Over Structure

    The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, on Thursday said all is set for the commencement of operation in the newly constructed model smart school, Sogunro, Akinyele, Ibadan.

    The Executive Secretary, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr. Jacob Dairo, said this during a handover of the structure to the Board by the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC.

    During the handover, Dairo applauded UBEC on its commitment to technical and digital education in the State.

    He equally said the Oyo State Government, through the Board has not relented in its bid to equip the younger generation with the requisite skills to remain competitive in the global economy.

    Mr. Dairo added that the place of education in the attainment of national development and transformation cannot be relegated to the background.

    The federal government through the Universal Basic Education Commission and the Oyo State Government constructed the Model smart school at Sogunro area, Akinyele Local Government.

    Mr. Dairo, who was recently appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Board by Governor Seyi Makinde, said the goal is to prioritize digital and technical education towards attaining socioeconomic development in the younger generation and make them competitive.

    The Executive Secretary said officials are ready for full academic activities, which will commence in September.

    Mr. Dairo said the school will accommodate pre-basic class; Special Education; Basic 1-3 and Junior Secondary School 1-2 pupils.

    “All is set for the school’s take-off in the new school calendar. The school will enhance the quality of teaching, learning and the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) of our pupils”, he said.

    “We commend the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, for its support in uplifting basic education in the State, as well as moves to eliminate out-of-school syndrome”.

    “Equally, we appreciate Governor Seyi Makinde in the implementation of qualitative basic education in the State. The visit was meant to assess the level of the project in readiness for the next session”, he added.

    Also speaking, a representative of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Mrs. Sherifat Lawal, reiterated the commitment of the federal government to Basic Education in Oyo State.

    She also said the objectives of the Commission is to assist all States in the development of smart schools projects, and to improve the access of teachers and pupils to quality teaching and learning materials.

    The Zonal consultant, UBEC, Arc. Sanya Akindele said the school has classrooms for pupils with special needs, Pre-basic, Primary and JSS classes.

    He added that the school is equipped with a Robotic laboratory, vocational laboratories, Clinic, ICT room and an e-library.

    Arc. Akindele also eulogized Governor Seyi Makinde, for his commitment to the project.

    Arc. Akindele added that the project is an opportunity to open up e-learning and expose pupils to computers at an early age, saying the school is fully computerised by UBEC/SUBEB.

    “The way forward is ICT and this will give them a jump-start in life”, he said.

    The Chairman, Sogunro community, Mr. Jimoh Wasiu who applauded Governor Seyi Makinde and the OYOSUBEB, said the project will contribute to the development of the community.

    Recently, the Desk officer, Oyo state Smart School, Mrs. Olaide Ladipo led a monitoring team, including officials of the Ministry of Energy and the host local government round facilities at the model smart school.

    She disclosed that registration has commenced online through www.oyostatesmartschool.com for admission, adding that the entrance examination will come up on Monday, September 11, 2023.

    Oyo, Brazil to Collaborate on Black Heritage Day

    The Oyo State Government is set to collaborate with the Brazilian custodian of culture, Oba Awurela, Kabiyesi Sangokunle Adekunle Alayande, on the Black Heritage Day.

    The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, while receiving Oba Awurela in his office, on Tuesday, declared the Oyo state government’s readiness to parley with Brazil on promotion of culture and tourism.

    Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun lauded Oba Awurela for his plans to expand the frontiers of tourism in Oyo State, using culture as a tool, which will, in turn, boost revenue in the State.

    Olatunbosun shed light on the mapped-out strategies to drive tourism in the state, through cultural heritage.

    He called for further international investment and cooperation to harness the state’s tourism potential.

    Oba Awurela, a paternal descendant of Awe in Oyo, said their mission was to propagate the image of his paternal household and further build cultural ties between Oyo State and Brazil.

    The monarch sought collaboration of the Oyo State Government in the celebration of Brazilian Black Heritage Day, otherwise known as ‘Searchie November’ which is a yearly celebration to commemorate Brazil’s freedom from the Europeans.

    Speaking further on the existing cultural integration, Oba Awurela said Brazil and all Diasporans in South America have an Academy that integrates religion and cultural heritage.

    He spoke on the plan to create the Oyo Empire in Brazil, which will be known as ‘OYOTEDO’.

    The Oyo State government on Monday expressed commitment to combat the rising rate of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking among youth and students in the State

    The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusoji Adeyanju spoke in Ibadan during an occasion organized in commemoration of the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

    Dr. Adeyanju while emphasizing on the theme for the year, “People first: stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention” in a press briefing held at the conference room of the Ministry, revealed that majority of drug cases were reported to be among students and youths respectively.

    Hence, the need to intensify awareness on the consequences of drug abuse among the youth, became necessary.

    He said the Oyo State Government has commenced intervention programmes, to tackle the menace, towards improving the health and well-being of its citizens.

    “According to reports by the UNODC, in the year 2021, around 275 million people used drugs worldwide, while over 36 million people suffered from drug use disorder, consequently, the number of people using drugs increased by 22%, owing in part to global population growth”, he said.

    “As a responsive government, the Oyo State government has put in place a Drug Abuse Control committee. The committee is inter-ministerial and domiciled at the state ministry of Health, saddled with the responsibilities of waging war against drug abuse and misuse in the State”

    “Consequences of drug abuse and misuse are serious and dangerous. Drug abuse could lead to social, legal, financial/economic, physical and mental health consequences which may differ depending on how far the addiction has progressed and the type of drug being used”, he added.

    Similarly, the Permanent Secretary reiterated that as part of the Intervention programmes, the committee would intensify the constituted drug free clubs in schools across the state, markets, motor parks, tertiary institutions among others.

    He added that the intervention program will focus on providing educational and awareness campaigns by informing the general public about the dangers of drug abuse.

    He also reiterated the importance of its prevention, stressing that the program will assist in developing policies that will strengthen the regulation and control of the sales and distribution of drugs.

    “The Federal Government of Nigeria has also reacted to curb the excesses of drug productions, circulation, distribution and consumption by creating agencies such as NAFDAC and NDLEA with various mandates,” he added.

    Also in his address, the Permanent Secretary, Hospital Management Board, Dr. Mufutao Ayoola disclosed the importance of creating a healthier community through collective efforts in addressing drug abuse.

    He urged all citizens to support the intervention programme and stay away from drug abuse.

    “It is gratifying to note that the issue of drug abuse has generated some interest both within and outside the country considering the consequences of the menace of Drug abuse and misuse in our society especially among the youths.”

    “I want to sincerely throw my weight behind this call because all hands must be on deck to fight this menace to a standstill. It is also of great concern that the elderly ones are not left out of drug abuse and misuse, reiterating that it was reported that a 71 years old man passed on in Ibadan after taking Colorado.”

    In their separate remarks, the Chairman, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Pharm. Gbenga Oguntoye and the Director Pharmacist, Ministry of Health, Pharm. Lukeman Akinwande, stated that stigma discrimination surrounding drug abuse can prevent individuals from seeking the help they need.

    To this end, he said, Pharmacists are essential resources for those struggling with drug abuse by providing non-judgmental support and connecting them with proper treatment options.

    The duo further revealed that the theme for the year is an excellent reminder for pharmacists to look beyond just dispensing medications.

    Muslim pilgrims from Oyo State have been urged to pay Two Million Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine Thousand Naira, as 2023 Hajj fare.

    Recall that the Oyo State Pilgrim Welfare’s Board (Muslim Wing) while waiting for the final announcement by the NAHCON, had earlier directed the pilgrims to pay the sum of Two Million Six Hundred Thousand Naira (2.6M) as initial deposit for the 2023 Hajj Fare.

    It therefore called on intending pilgrims who have made the initial deposit of Two Million Six Hundred Thousand Naira (#2.6M) to pay the balance of Three Hundred and Ninety-Nine Thousand Naira (#399,000) on or before Monday, 17th April, 2023.

    This was revealed by the Chairman of the Board, Professor Sayed Tunde Malik in a statement signed and released to the Press on Wednesday.

    The Chairman noted that the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) with Chief Executive Officers of State’s Pilgrims Welfare Boards on Friday 7th April, 2023 announced and approved the final 2023 Hajj Fares for each States across the Nation in which the sum of Two Million Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine Thousand Naira (#2.999M) was approved for each intending pilgrim from Oyo State.

    The Commission also fixed Friday 21st April for final remittance of the money paid by all intending pilgrims.

    While soliciting for the continued understanding and cooperation of the intending pilgrims, Prof. Malik advised them to make use of the limited time to complete their payments to any of the Designated Bank Accounts of the Board as this will enable the Board to remit

    the approved fund to the NAHCON and make necessary preparations for their travel arrangements to the Holy Land for the 2023 pilgrimage.

    The Board’s Chair also urged all prospective Pilgrims who have completed their payment to immediately come and submit their International Passports at the Hajj Camp, Office of the Board, Olodo, Ibadan for the travel processing.

    Violent Protest Rocks Oyo, Delta, Edo Over Naira Scarcity

    Protests have broken out in several states across the country, including Oyo, Delta, and Edo, over the scarcity of the new N200, N500, N1,000 notes and rejection of the old naira bills.

    This comes less than two weeks after residents of Ibadan, Oyo State took to the streets in protest against the hardship triggered by the naira notes swap and fuel price hike.

    Violent demonstrations were held on Wednesday in Ibadan and Udu, near Warri, the commercial hub of Delta State.

    The protests were in reaction to banks nationwide refusing the old currency in line with a position taken by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), although the Supreme Court had ruled that the apex bank’s February 10 deadline be suspended temporarily.

    The position has since led to a standoff between the CBN and the governors of various states, including Kano, Ogun and Ondo, who challenged the apex bank and/or the banks in their respective states that continue to reject the old currency.

    There were demonstrations in different parts of Ibadan, such as Mokola, resulting in a gridlock along Eleyele/Eruwa road.

    Cars were turned back at some point while some schoolchildren were forced to return home as a result of the protest.

    Commercial activities were grounded as the Mokola Road was turned into a football field.

    Most major roads were deserted as many residents resorted to trekking long distances.

    No fewer than 453 local contractors on Thursday participated in an open bidding for the construction/renovation of public schools and other facilities recently advertised by the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB).

    The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, said the bids were for 2020/2021 FGN-UBEC-SUBEB’s infrastructural renewal and educational development projects.

    He added that the bid, conducted in the presence of the contractors and few government officials at the premises of the Board, followed Governor Seyi Makinde’s directive about government contracts adhering to public procurement process for transparency and accountability.

    Dr. Adeniran said a total of Two Hundred and Twenty-three (223) projects were bidded for under the FGN-UBEC-SUBEB’S intervention project. 

    Applauding the present administration’s efforts in the Education sector, Adeniran noted that in spite of the State Government’s spending on various developmental projects in the areas of Health, Road construction, Agriculture, Social Welfare and a host of others which have been yielding positive results, the Board has also been able to roll out four years Intervention Projects in three years of assumption of office.

    “His Excellency’s resilience in resuscitating the ailing standard of education in the State is highly commendable”, he said.

    “This can be unequivocally stated as an unparalleled achievement that needs to be applauded”, Adeniran added.

    He stressed that the annual intervention fund runs to billions of naira which is jointly and equally contributed by the State and Federal Governments for the development of Basic Education in the State. 

    Adeniran hinted that Oyo State has accessed all the accrued funds till date, saying “it should be accentuated that our State is doing brilliantly well in terms of developmental projects”. 

    Dr. Adeniran appreciated the State Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement and her team for their ethical proficiency in ensuring and sustaining the best practices of Public Procurement Act.

    He also applauded the efforts of the Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission in facilitating free and qualitative Basic Education in a conducive learning environment for every Nigerian child, irrespective of their location in the entire country.

    Speaking at the bid opening exercise, the representative of Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. (Mrs) Aisha Abdul attested to the Oyo State Government’s commitment and passion to the Basic Education sector.

    She applauded the efforts of the Board in ensuring transparency, fairness and accountability, which has not been compromised.

    She appealed to the successful contractors to follow the contract modalities and regulations guiding the projects.

    The Projects bidded for include:

    (i)Construction of a block of 4 classrooms: 15

    (ii)Construction of a block of 3 classrooms: 46

    (iii)Construction of ECCDE Pilot Centres: 5

    (iv)Construction of Perimeter Fence: 7

    (v)Renovation of blocks of classrooms: 53

    (vi)Sinking of borehole: 39

    (vii)Sinking of deep well: 2

    (viii)Procurement of Furniture which has been broken into 56 lots (total of 8533 desks & benches as well as 502 pairs of teachers’ tables and chairs).

    The event was witnessed by representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education; Bureau of Public Procurement; Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology; Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors; Nigeria Society of Engineers.

    Others present were Nigerian Institute of Architects; Nigeria Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers; and Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

    Mottainai Rolls out Numbers for Waste Pick-Up in Oyo

    Oyo State Government, through its Waste Management consultant, Mottainai Recycling Ltd. on Thursday, rolled out numbers for prompt evacuation of wastes within the State.

    A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun in Ibadan, the State capital, assured residents of quick response from Mottainai Recycling Ltd and PSPs. 

    According to the statement, the MD, Mottainai Recycling Ltd, Mr. Adey Adewuyi, said the numbers will create a structure to guarantee quick response to residents in need of quick evacuation of wastes.

    Adewuyi said the numbers to call for waste pick-up are 0700 080 0700 or WhatsApp 0818 190 0004.

    The statement further assured residents that the present administration, led by Governor Seyi Makinde is putting in so much effort to improve waste management in the state, in a bid to harness job creation potentials and other environmental benefits.

    BESDA: Oyo Hints On Mainstreaming Non-Formal Learners to Formal Schools

    The Oyo State Government has said it is excited with the news that some non-formal learners, under the Intensive Literacy Programme of Better Education Service Delivery for All programme (BESDA) have been mainstreamed into formal schools.

    Speaking during a verification tour of the 21 Local Government Areas implementing BESDA in Oyo State, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran applauded the new development.

    He said, it is the kind of testimonial for both the teachers and Government, as the learners have been assessed before enrolled into the formal schools.

    “This is a big plus for us in Oyo State. It shows that BESDA is working for us. Though we do not have the actual figure yet, some non-formal learning centres we visited in certain local governments affirmed that some of their learners have been mainstreamed”, Adeniran boasted.

    Dr. Adeniran said it is the aim of the Oyo State Government that the majority of the learners undergoing non-formal education, gain admission into primary schools.

    Adeniran thanked the teachers, who work to teach the students basic education, adding that their roles have bridged the gap between the non-formal learners and children in the formal learning centres.

    The OYOSUBEB Boss added that the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration is leaving no stone unturned in reducing the out-of-school menace to the barest minimum in Oyo State.

    In her comments, the BESDA Consultant for Oyo State, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, who also monitored the verification exercise in some Local Government Areas, commended the impressive turn-out of BESDA in Oyo State.

    She applauded the Oyo State Government, through the BESDA Technical Committee, noting that the success of the programme is also her main aim.

    Speaking in Irepo Local Government, Kishi, the Secretary, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Irepo, Comrade Hassan Ajibola applauded the doggedness of the BESDA team, led by Dr. Adeniran.

    He noted that the success of the BESDA Programme was made easy through their honesty and commitment to the course.

    The NUT leader therefore appealed to the Oyo State Government to consider incorporating the BESDA teachers into the mainstream teaching service.

    The Chairman who led a team of BESDA Technical Committee members on the verification exercise visited St. Paul’s Anglican School, Odo-ona, South-West LGA; Community Primary School II, Airport, Ona-Ara LGA; Community Primary School II, Ojimi-Ayinde, Ido LGA; C&S School II, Ayete, Ibarapa North LGA; Baptist Basic School III, Igangan, Ibarapa North LGA; Islamic Mission Primary School, Bode, Ibadan South-East LGA.

    Other BESDA implementing schools visited were St. David’s Basic School, Akingbehin, Olorunda-Aba, Lagelu LGA; St. Stephen Basic School, Araromi, Ajobo, Akinyele LGA; LA Pry School, Oke-Esa, Iseyin; Nawair-Ud-Deen Basic School, Otu, Itesiwaju LGA; Macedonia Community Primary School, Idi-ero Saki; LA Pry School, Igboho; LA School II, Sabo, Oyo, Atiba LGA.

    Also visited were Nomadic Pry School, Gaa-Okenla, Kishi, Irepo LGA; CPS Ayepe, Oriire LGA; Baptist Basic School, Osupa, Ogbomoso North LGA; Methodist Pry School, Oke-Ado, Surulere; Baptist Basic School, Ile-Abu, Ogo-Oluwa LGA.

  • NBS Commences Verification of BESDA Implementing Schools in Oyo

    The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has begun a verification exercise of all Better Education Service for All (BESDA) focused centres in Oyo State.

    Speaking at the flag-off of a 5-day training of NBS Enumerators in Ibadan today, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said the Board would collaborate with NBS to ensure a hitch-free exercise in the State.

    Adeniran said his office, in partnership with office of the Statistician General of the State, would ensure the enumerators have unhindered access to the 21 BESDA focus Local Government Areas in the State, adding that this will assist the government in attaining its aim to eradicate Out-Of-School Children menace in the State.

    “We assure the NBS management that the State Government, through the Board will accord the verification agents all the necessary support and information they may require”, he said.

    Adeniran added that the State Government will ensure pupils in affected BESDA focus-schools stay back, despite the holidays, during the verification exercise, to ease the process.

    “BESDA is a programme-for-result, funded by the World Bank to support increase in access to basic education by raising equitable access for Out-Of-School Children (OOSC), improve literacy and strengthen accountability for results in basic education in Nigeria. We are determined to make it work in Oyo State”, Adeniran said.

    Adeniran noted that the State is ready for NBS visitation in the selected schools across the state, to verify the authenticity of records kept by the implementing schools.

    He added that the Board will also provide data for the assessment of four Disbursement Linked Indicators (DLIs) on which the state would be rewarded.

    “We welcome the NBS team and its Enumerators. This particular exercise, which is the second Phase, would be conducted in the 21 BESDA focus LGAs in our State”, he said.

    Speaking earlier, the South-West Zonal Controller, NBS, Mr. Bayo Okunuga hinted that the trained enumerators, who are also referred to as NBS verification agents, would be deployed across various local governments to collect data.

    He thanked the Oyo State Government for its commitment towards the success of BESDA and NBS’ verification in the State.

    Also in attendance were the Statistician General of Oyo State, Mr. Adekunle Teslim Adejuwon; the Coordinating Director of OYOSUBEB, Mrs. Abosede Owoeye and other management team of the Board.
