    Oyo lawmaker, Olusegun Popoola dies at 46

    The lawmaker representing Ibadan South-East Constituency II in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Ademola Popoola, is dead.

    Popoola, 45, was until his death the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

    Speaker of the Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, confirmed this in a statement on Wednesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    He described as grievous and heart-breaking, the news of the death of the lawmaker who had been receiving treatment at the University College Hospital, UCH Ibadan where he died on Tuesday night.

    “The news of the death of one of the most active, vibrant, and resourceful lawmakers in the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Ademola Popoola popularly, called Popson came to me and everyone in the House as a rude shock,” Ogundoyin said.

    “We are deeply saddened and grieved by this painful and untimely exit of one of us. This is unbearable. He was a patriotic, selfless, and hardworking lawmaker who gave his best for the service of Oyo State House of Assembly, his constituents, and indeed the entire people of Oyo State.”

    Ogundoyin, who said he was personally distraught on hearing Popoola’s departure, stated that the incident was a bitter pill to swallow for everyone in the Assembly.

    “I have been visiting him in the hospital and he has been showing signs of recovery. Little did I know that I was seeing him for the last time a few days ago when I went in the company of some lawmakers,” he recalled.

    The speaker also described the late lawmaker as a peace-loving and easy-going gentleman who was admired by all.

    “We just lost a bridge-builder, a man of peace, and a gentleman par-excellent. He will be sorely missed by every one of us,” he said.

    The Speaker noted that the dedicated and selfless nature of Popoola, as well as his quality representation in the House, earned him the return ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ibadan South-East II State Constituency.

    Unknown Gunmen Kidnap Oyo Lawmaker’s Sister, Demand N20m Ransom

    Some gunmen have kidnapped Tejumade Babalola, a sister to a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Sunkammi Babalola.

    Daybreak gathered that Tejumade Babalola was kidnapped in the Montan area of Ibadan.

    Her brother, Sunkammi Babalola is currently representing Egbeda State Constituency in the state House of Assembly.

    The victim was reportedly kidnapped on Monday while returning from her shop.

    Daybreak gathered that the victim was on a commercial motorcycle when the gunmen in a car double-crossed them, shot sporadically into the air and forced her into their car.

    The gunmen were said to have requested a ransom of N20mfrom the family of the victim.

    Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi when contacted on Thursday said he was not aware of the incident as it was not reported to the police.

    “I am not aware of the incident. It has not been reported to the police.

    “You know that there is no way they can report to the police because the police station in the area has been burnt.”

    But, the victim’s brother, lawmaker, Babalola when contacted confirmed the abduction of his sister.

    Babalola in a telephone conversation with Daybreak on Thursday said that three men in a Toyota car kidnapped his sister on Monday.

    “It is true. I was not there when the incident happened. They called me and they told me that three gunmen kidnapped my sister.

    “They kidnapped her and they forced her into a waiting car. They forced her into the car, Toyota car, with ash colour and took her to an unknown destination.”
