BREAKING: Notorious herdsman Iskilu Wakili arrested in Oyo

The notorious herdsman terrorising communities in Ibarapa and Oke-Ogun areas of Oyo State, Iskilu Wakili, has been arrested.

Our correspondents learnt he was arrested on Sunday morning in Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Government.

Wakili had been alleged to have masterminded the killings and abductions in the communities.

He was arrested by men of the Odua Peoples Congress(OPC).

Kehinde Aderemi, Special Assistant on Media to Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams Adams, confirmed his arrest.

The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere commended OPC for the development.

Its National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, in a statement on Sunday, said: “Afenifere gives tremendous commendation to OPC under Iba Gani Adams for the arrest of iskilu Wakili, a Fulani bandit who has been spreading terror on ou people in Igboho area and the Nigerian Police and other security agencies unable to do anything about him.

“The early morning peaceful arrest confirms our position on how effective local initiative can do well in homeland security.

“We were not shocked that but for the intervention by the leadership in Oyo State, the Police would have gone after the OPC boys instead of taking the criminal from them and do the needful.

“Nigeria is going nowhere with a security network that shuns federalism.”

OPC on February 27 arrested the second-in-command to the alleged dreaded kidnapper, one Isiaka Muhammadu.

BREAKING: Akeredolu, other Govs, Miyetti Allah meet over vacation order

Governors of Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Kebbi, and Jigawa States on Monday held a meeting with the national leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) at the International Culture and Events Centre in Akure, Ondo State capital.

The NGF Chairman and Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi in his welcome remarks highlighted some issues expected to be resolved at the meeting:

These include addressing issues of crimes and criminality, the framework of engagement with MACBAN on security; and creating alternative security network like Amotekun.

He added that the meeting is at the instance of the NGF and is not planned but necessitated by the exigencies of the present challenges of insecurity in the country.

He also pointed out that no eviction order to Fulani herdsmen in Ondo or any other state in the southwest.

According to Fayemi, the Ondo Governor only directed that all herdsmen should register for them to operate in the state forest reserves.

The NGF Chairman said ethnic profiling has to stop and all tribes in Nigeria are faced by the insecurity challenge. Fulanis too are victims of crime such as cattle rustling.

Former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Iyiola Omisore, and police authorities are also at the meeting.

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu last week ordered herdsmen to vacate all forest reserves in the state within the next seven days.

The Governor, who made the proclamation via Twitter, said the order had become imperative due to the increasing incidents of kidnap cases in the state.

“These unfortunate incidents are traceable to the activities of some bad elements masquerading as herdsmen. These felons have turned our forest reserves into hideouts for keeping victims of kidnapping, negotiating for ransom, and carrying out other criminal activities,” Akeredolu said.

This order generated controversies with the Federal Government in a statement by the presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu saying Akeredolu being a senior lawyer would be the least expected to unilaterally expel thousands of herders who have lived all their lives in the state on account of the infiltration of the forests by criminals.

Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, has revealed what he saw at the compound of Serike Fulani, Saliu Kadri when he (Igboho) AND his supporters stormed the Fulani leader’s home last week.

The grassroots mobilizer and hundreds of his followers had stormed Kadri’s home where they confronted the Seriki and issued a seven-day ultimatum to Fulanis in the area to quit.

Igboho had last week given the Fulani residing and doing business in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government of Oyo State a 7-day ultimatum to leave the area.

In a tweet on Sunday, Igboho said he saw all manners of expensive cars at the Seriki’s compound and questioned him about them.

“I saw different expensive vehicles, such as Range Rover Sport, Toyota Venza, Camry and more in the compound of the Seriki.

“I asked him if it was with the proceeds from the cattle that he sold that he was able to buy the expensive vehicles, some of which costs as much as N38m.”

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered for the arrest of Igboho according to Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Spokesman.

This was after he made good his threat to evict Fulani from Igangan at the weekend.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Ngozi Onadeko, has called for calm in the state, promising that action will be taken against those behind the recent violence and ethnic tension in the state.

“Investigation into the arson and the breach of the peace, which occurred at Igangan will be investigated to logical conclusion and culprits shall be brought to justice,” read part of a statement issued on behalf of the commissioner by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Fadeyi Olugbenga, on Saturday.

The police boss, who blamed the situation in the state on “the inciting pronouncement of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, A.K.A Sunday Igboho”, warned that security agencies will not watch while some criminal elements take laws into their hands.

The statement, however, did not confirm or deny a report that the Inspector-General of Police had ordered Adeyemo’s arrest.

Adeyemo had issued a quit notice to herders in the state and on Friday held a rally in Igangan to buttress his position.

According to the police the rally is responsible for the violence which resulted in houses and cars being burnt in the town.

“Following the fear of threats to public peace, occasioned by the inciting pronouncement of Chief Sunday Adeyemo, A.K.A Sunday Igboho, the Oyo State Police Command jointly with the Operation Burst had embarked on visibility/confidence building patrol of the areas concerned,” the police said.

“Sadly, the relative peace and calmness, being enjoyed, due to the visibility patrols of the Security Agencies were truncated by the visit of Sunday Igboho to Igangan, at about 16:30hrs [4:30 pm] on 22nd January 2021.

“The visit had culminated in a mob action by some youths in the town, who, armed with different types of weapons, embarked on arson and a breach of peace. In the process, grievous hurt was committed against one of the police officers, while discharging his statutory duties.”

She also urged the youths to avoid being used as pawns to ignite an ethnic war.

Warning people against taking laws into their hands, the police said that a “substantial number of suspects (of different ethnic backgrounds)” were arrested in connection with virtually all the cases of kidnapping or assassination, which had occurred in the State.

Some have been arraigned in court and are being remanded in correctional facilities, while investigations are still ongoing in some of the cases.
