    SDG Donates 14, 850 Textbooks to Oyo Primary schools

    The Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals has donated 150 cartons (14, 850 textbooks) of the Global Goals for sustainable development textbooks to Primary schools in Oyo State, under the auspices of Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board.

    The donation is in fulfilment of the SDG’s pledge to collaborate with Oyo SUBEB on providing quality education for public primary school pupils in the State.

    Speaking at OyoSUBEB’s car park, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on SDGs, Mr. Kunle Yusuff said the 14, 850 textbooks would be distributed freely to pupils in Primary 4, 5 and 6.

    He affirmed that, “we are convinced that education is key to unlocking Oyo State’s greatest potential, hence, our huge investment in educational intervention programs.

    “We will continue to do our best to create community focused initiatives to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, (SDG), Number 4, which seeks to achieve inclusive and equitable quality education for all by 2030”, he said.

    “We donated the Students’ Edition of the Global Goals for sustainable development not just to provide quality education in the public primary schools, but to also create a model for educational experience for our children.”

    Mr. Yusuff assured the Board of further collaborations with his office, noting that Basic Education forms part of his office’s key targets.

    In his response, the Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Adeniran promised that the texts would be part of school curriculum and learning materials for social studies and basic science in all schools.

    He posited that with the spate of educational development in Oyo State, schools would soon start recording zero dropout among pupils; and improved learning outcomes in speaking, reading and writing among the pupils.

    “The achievements recorded have been made possible by the critical roles played by H.E. Governor Seyi Makinde, Universal Basic Education Commission and other partners such as the Office of the SSA on SDGs, who are committed to sustaining the impact of this project.

    “We are currently working on how to distribute this intervention to all Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities,” said Adeniran.

    The Chairman also admonished teachers to see to it that the textbooks are used for the purpose they are meant to serve.

    The event was witnessed by representatives of UBEC, NUT, and other stakeholders in the Basic education sector.

    BREAKING: Appeal Court upholds sack of Oyo Council bosses

    The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan on Wednesday set aside the Oyo State High Court’s judgement restraining the state governor and or government from dissolving local government councils in the state.

    Justice Haruna Tsammani who delivered the judgment said the sacked local government Chairmen failed to show verifiable facts of the plan by the Oyo State governor to dissolve the councils.

    Tsammani said the case initiated was based on mere speculations and conjectures.

    Bashorun Bosun Ajuwon had instituted the case on behalf of the Oyo State chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON).

    The Governor Seyi Makinde led government and the embattled council bosses had been at loggerheads over the control of the local government and local council development areas.

    The judgement elicited jubilation as the Court of Appeal premises which was filled by supporters of the state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) erupted in loud songs of victory.

    The court after considering all evidences and submissions of both legal teams upheld the validity of the decision of the Oyo state government to dissolve the sacked ALGON.

    Recall that ALGON had approached an Ibadan high court after Governor Makinde, few hours after he was sworn in, sacked its members who were elected by the administration of late former governor Abiola Ajimobi.

    COVID-19: FG kicks over reopening of schools in Oyo

    The Federal Government on Monday kicked against the reopening of schools in Oyo State amidst COVID-19 pandemic, describing such as insensitive to the health of the people.

    Mr. Emeka Nwajiuba, Minister of State for Education, said this at the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 daily news conference in Abuja.

    Our correspondent reports that Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had earlier ordered the reopening of schools across the state.

    According to the minister, it is expedient to recognise the fact that Oyo State is a government operating under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a Federating unit.

    He noted that though the governor had the right to reopen school as he deemed fit, but added that the primary purpose of governance remained the security of its people.

    Nwajiuba said the Federal Government had over 138,000 schools across the country and for the governor to open the schools was in the very least insensitive.

    He, however, urged parents to, as a matter of urgency, keep their children and wards under lock and key, to forestall contacting the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The minister appealed to parents and guardians, whose children and wards would be writing the West African Examinations Council to bear with the government, pending when the necessary arrangements would be made.

    He noted that if there was anything the government could do to help in the present circumstances, it would not fail to act.

    Nwajiuba stated that the ministry had fixed a meeting with WAEC on how it would arrange the examination time for the exit year children, for revisions in their subjects, to be able to prepare well for their exams.

  • COVID-19 : Oyo records 11 new cases

    Oyo State has recorded 11 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, the latest figures released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have revealed.

    In the figures released on Sunday night, the 11 cases in Oyo were among the new 338 recorded in 18 states.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new cases bring the number recorded in the state to 118.

    Gov. Seyi Makinde had on Saturday night announced 31 new cases, the highest recorded in a single day in the state so far.

    Makinde, who said 30 of the cases were staff of an organisation based in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, added that the organisation had been shut down while efforts were ongoing to decontaminate the premises.

    COVID-19: Cases in Oyo increase to 73 as 4 persons tested positive

    Four persons have again tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Oyo State, according to the latest figures released by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)

    In the figures released on Wednesday night, the four cases in Oyo were among the 185 newly recorded in 22 states.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov Seyi Makinde, in his tweeter handle monitored in Ibadan, announced that the new figure had brought the number of cases recorded in Oyo to 73.

    Makinde urged people who have come in contact with a COVID-19 case, people with COVID-19 symptoms, cough, fever, tiredness, body ache and shortness of breath and those with respiratory disease symptoms, to come forward and register for test.

    He also called on healthcare workers who had been in contact with the high-risk groups, above to join in registering for the ongoing drive-through/walk-through testing at Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan.

    The governor further urged residents to call  emergency operations centre if travellers from other states were seen in their communities.

    Gov. Makinde says inter-agency security collaboration has boosted security in Oyo state

    Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, has commended inter-agency collaboration among security services in the state, saying it has greatly boosted the security situation.

    Mr Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Makinde, quoted the governor as making this assertion during a reception organised for the 163 newly promoted senior officers of security agencies in Oyo state, held at the Lawn Tennis Court, Police Headquarters Eleyele, Ibadan.

    The governor said that the collaboration among the police and other security agencies in the state had helped the task of maintaining peace, security and protection of lives and property of the people in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

    He said that the collaborative efforts of all the security agencies in state had helped to reduce crime to the barest minimum.

    Makinde stressed that the inter-agency collaboration among the security agencies has made the objective of securing the state easy to achieve.

    He thanked the all the officers and men of the security agencies in state for making the state secured.

    “I want to also specially appreciate the good work of the heads of the security agencies; the CPs, the Immigration Comptroller, Commandant of the NSCDC for the collaborative effort, because I know that there is no single agency that can cover this entire state alone,”  he said.

    Makinde, who described the inter-agency collaboration among security agencies in the state as top-notch, noted that there was always eagerness from one agency to assist the other in achieving the objective of securing the state.

    He tasked the security agencies to “keep up” collaborative spirit and not relent in pursuing the goal of keeping Oyo state safe and peaceful.

    The governor, while congratulating the newly promoted Senior Officers, charged them to see their promotions as call to do more for the country and urged them to be good ambassadors of the state.

    He charged those still expecting their promotions to work harder, praying that God would uplift them in due course.

    According to him, the heads of the security agencies cannot function and deliver without all of you that are seated here tonight.

    “Those that have been promoted should know that it is a call to do more and those who are still expecting their promotion, by the grace of God, it will come but you have to work very hard.”

    Earlier in his remarks, Mr Shina Olukolu, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo, appreciated the administration of Gov. Makinde for the huge support it has been giving to the security in the task of securing the state.

    Olukolu noted that the Makinde administration, in just seven months, has surpassed the previous administrations in the state in terms of provisions to enhance the performance of the police in securing the state.

    He added, “Some of the things that make officers of all the services to want to continue rendering efficient, dedicated services to the society, which will enhance their performance, are training and retraining, logistics to carry out their operations, welfare matters and appreciation.

    He stated further that the police and other security agencies in the state would continue to work together to maintain peace and
    security of lives and property across the length and breadth of the state.

    He appealed to the governor to continue to ensure that security remains top priority in his administration.(NAN)
