India Accidentally Fires Missile Into Pakistan

India’s military accidentally fired a missile into neighbouring Pakistan, New Delhi’s defence ministry said on Friday, calling it “deeply regrettable”.

Hindu-majority India and Muslim Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from British colonial rule in 1947, two of them over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Their shared border has a heavy military presence on both sides, and there have been numerous flare-ups between them, with tensions sometimes raising fears of an atomic exchange.

“In the course of a routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile” on Wednesday, India’s defence ministry said.

It did not specify the type of missile, but said it landed “in an area of Pakistan”.

The incident was “deeply regrettable”, it said, adding that it was “a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident”.

The defence ministry declined to provide further information to AFP.

The statement came hours after Islamabad’s foreign ministry condemned what it called an “unprovoked violation of its airspace by an Indian origin ‘super-sonic flying object’”.

India’s charge d’affaires in Islamabad had been summoned to the foreign office for a “strong protest”, it added.

The “imprudent launch” had damaged property on the ground and put at risk both civilian lives and aircraft in Pakistani airspace, it said, accusing India of “callousness towards regional peace and stability”.

New Delhi has more than 500,000 troops stationed in Indian-administered Kashmir, where rebel groups have battled for decades for the region’s independence or its merger with Pakistan.

New Delhi accuses Islamabad of backing the insurgents, which it denies.

Indian aircraft bombed what New Delhi called a terrorist training camp deep inside Pakistan in 2019 after a suicide bombing claimed by a Pakistan-based militant group killed 40 Indian troops.

In aerial skirmishes over Kashmir the next day, at least one Indian jet was shot down and its pilot captured by Pakistan, but Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan had him released in a “peace gesture”.

  • FIFA suspends Pakistan, Chad football federations

FIFA suspends Pakistan, Chad football federations

World football ruling body FIFA has suspended the national federations of Pakistan and Chad with immediate effect.

FIFA said on Wednesday the decision to suspend the Chadian football association (FTFA) was taken because of interference by the country’s government authorities in the federation’s affairs.

“The suspension will be lifted once the relevant government decisions have been repealed and the FTFA and its management have confirmed to FIFA that the FTFA premises are again under its control,” FIFA said.

Chad had already been excluded by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers because of the situation.

The Pakistan football federation (PFF) has been suspended by FIFA due to third-party interference, which, in the view of the international ruling body, constitutes a violation of the FIFA statutes.

This situation has been triggered by the recent illegal occupation of the PFF headquarters in Lahore by a group of protestors and “an alleged decision by certain individuals to remove the FIFA-appointed normalisation committee of the PFF.”

“As the situation remains unchanged, the Bureau of the Council has decided to suspend the PFF,” FIFA said.

The PFF suspension will be lifted once FIFA has received confirmation that the PFF’s premises, accounts, administration and communication channels are again under “its full control and it can continue to carry out its mandate without further hindrance.

India struggles with coronavirus shutdown; Pakistan cases hit 1,000

India’s 1.3 billion people on Wednesday were under an immense lockdown to prevent an explosion of coronavirus cases as the government struggled to deliver essential goods and calm nerves.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered everyone indoors for the next three weeks, saying this was the only way to avoid a disaster and effectively shutting down Asia’s third-largest economy.

However, with less than four hours before the decree went into effect at midnight on Tuesday, crowds of people thronged shops to stock up on milk, rations and medicines even though Modi said these would be available throughout the lockdown.

Others including labourers and day workers headed home to the countryside from cities such as Delhi, many walking because public transport also stopped.

“My daughter needs allergy medicines regularly.

“The medicine shops are open but how do we reach there?

“Who wants to risk a run-in with the police? They’re beating people up,” Yash Goswami in the northern town of Moradabad said.

India’s tally of 539 cases and nine deaths seems tiny compared with those in China, Italy and Spain; although health experts have warned that the world’s second most populous country faces a tidal wave of infections if tough steps are not taken.

The lockdown came after evidence indicated it was spreading out into India’s countless small towns after a first wave in Delhi, the commercial hub Mumbai, and other big cities.

That has raised the prospect of a cash-strapped public health sector being overwhelmed.

India has just 0.5 hospital beds for every 1,000 people, compared to 4.3 in China and 3.2 in Italy.

“The only way we can save ourselves is by social distancing, and staying inside our homes.

“A little bit of inconvenience now will save so many lives,” Information Minister Prakash Javedkar said.

India’s population is even more densely packed than China’s raising the risk of rapid transmission of the virus.
