    FG calls for tolerance, peaceful coexistence among Nigerians

    The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Pauline Tallen, has urged Nigerians to love, tolerate and live peacefully with one another.

    Tallen made the call on Thursday in Abuja, at the 5th International Conference on Love and Tolerance: tagged “Countering Violent Extremism for Peaceful Coexistence” organised by UFUK Dialogue, a Non-Governmental Organisation.

    The Minister, who was represented by Princess Jumai Idornije, Special Adviser to the Minister on Technical Matters, said that people needed love and tolerance for unity.

    “There is unity in diversity, that is the strength of Nigeria our country, and will forever remain our strength; love and tolerance brought about unity and united families from across the country,” she said.

    According to her, it is important to appreciate the role women play in countering terrorism.

    “They can be real agents of change and will be the best champions both in identifying early signs of radicalisation and addressing such before the individual lose control; they are nearer to the children and their families.

    “Appreciating the critical role women play is useful in advocating and developing more targeted effort to counter violent extremism to prevent terrorism and abide in love and tolerance,” Tallen said.

    Speaking at the event, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology who was represented by Prof. P. Onyenkwe, said love is the essence of human life.

    “Nigeria is a country of diverse cultures and traditions which can easily be explored for the development of the country.

    “Love is such a universal language that requires no physical presence and tolerance is needed,” he said.

    Speaking in the same vein, Mr Kenneth Okonkwo, a Nollywood Actor, said love is not a choice, but a command.

    “Love your neighbour as yourself, your neighbour is not defined; he can be a Christian, Muslim, Hindu but the command is love your neighbour as yourself.

    “We are a multi religious nation and you should be able to know who your neighbour is because you are under the commandment of God to love your neighbour as yourself,” Okonkwo said.

    He added that if Nigeria wants to counter terrorism, the antidote is love, saying “Love is what we need.” (NAN)

    Nasarawa Govt. tasks communities on peaceful co-existence

    Nasarawa State Government has urged Tiv Community and other communities across the state to embrace peace and tolerate one another irrespective of their religious, ethnic and political affiliations for development to thrive.

    Alhaji Yusuf Aliyu-Yuraki, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, made the call on Thursday in Lafia while playing host to Tiv community from Awe Local government Area of the state.

    He said that the call has became imperative considering the importance of peace to the development of any society.

    The Commissioner commended the community for the visit while assuring them of the state government’s commitment to developing rural communities across the state.

    ” I want to commend you for the visit and to assure you of the state government determination to developing rural areas in the state in order to improve the standard of living of the people.

    ” But we can only enjoy more dividends of democracy if we embrace and live in peace and tolerate one another irrespective of our affiliations.

    ” This is because no society will achieve meaningful progress and development in an atmosphere of rancour and confusion.

    ” As peace is priceless and non negotiable and it is the necessary requirement for the development of any society, hence the need for the call, ” he said.

    Aliyu-Turaki urged the community and other people of the state to give their maximum support to Gov. Abdullahi Sule’s administration to enable him succeed.

    The Commissioner said that every leader or government need the support of his people to succeed.

    Earlier, the Leader of the delegation, Mr Julius Uhembe, said that they were at the commissioner’s office to congratulate him on his appointment as member of the state Executive Council.

    Uhembe also pledged their loyalty and support to the state government policies and programmes in order to enjoy more dividends of democracy.

    Oba of Benin calls for peaceful co-existence, unity among Nigerians

    The Oba of Benin, Omo N’oba N’edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II on Friday called for the peaceful co-existence and unity among Nigerians.

    Ewuare II made the call during a courtesy visit on the governor of Niger, Alhaji Abubakar Bello, at Government House, Minna.

    “There is need to pray for peaceful co-existence and unity of Nigeria,” he said.

    He said that Edo and Niger states have a long sustained relationship dating back to its creation by the ex-military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd).

    The traditional ruler, who was happy with the warm reception accorded Edo indigenes in the state, added that his visit would further boost the bond of relationship between the two states.

    He said that the visit was to reciprocate the gesture done him by the state Governor and the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Chairman of the state council of traditional leaders who attended his coronation in Benin city.

    Responding, Bello who was represented by the state deputy governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso said Niger has a sustained relationship with the traditional rukers in the state.

    “We will continue to make the traditional institution relevant and also sustain the existing relationship,” he said.

    He said that the roles of traditional leaders in the country must be supported and respected in view of their significance as the custodian of cultures of every society.

    The governor noted that many social vices in the country could be tackled if the traditional institutions are strengthened and recognised by governments at all levels.

    He said that Ewuare’s visit would further strengthen the long cordial relationship existing between the two states.

    Bello gave the assurance that the state government would continue to respect the rights of non indigines in the state.

    The Oba was accompanied by the Etsu Nupe and other High Chiefs from Niger and Edo. (NAN)
