COVID-19: Pharmacist offers free 24hrs temperature checks in Kwara

A US based Pharmacist, Dr. Abdulraheem Malik has directed all the branches of his pharmacies across Kwara to conduct free 24hours temperature checks for people in the state.

Speaking with newsmen on Wednesday in Ilorin, Malik who is also the Managing Director of Rotamedics Pharmacy explained that it was  to compliment the state government’s efforts at curbing the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

He expressed concern on the impact of the viral  infection across the world, while cautioning the public to place high priority on ensuring the disease does not spread throughout the state.

Malik commended the state government for taking proactive measure by ordering a lockdown and setting up the Technical Committee on COVID-19 in the best interest of the people.

He said: “The no movement policy will help curtail the spread of the virus by all undetected carriers.

“So I want to appeal to everyone in Kwara to support the State Governor, and his team by adhering to the directive without compromise.

“Kudos to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Kayode Alabi and members of the Committee for paying a surprise visit to some check points where security agents were caught compromising their mandate and letting passengers and vehicles into the state”.

The Pharmacist also advised that state government should  mandate all citizens to wear mask, adding that this will go a long way to curb the spread of the disease.

“Experts have also said the virus is also spread by micro droplets that linger in the air for a long time, especially in enclosed settings.

“They have recommended keeping doors and windows open for ventilation whenever people gather in a room.

“In my little capacity to support the state government to manage this crisis, I am providing free temperature checks in all the branches of Rotamedics Pharmacy.

“This will help in the preliminary steps towards detection, diagnosis, quarantine and subsequent reduction in the spread of the coronavirus.” he added.

COVID-19: Not all hand sanitisers can kill virus — Pharmacist

A pharmacist, Mr Ayobambo Fajuyitan, on Tuesday cautioned Nigerians against using hand sanitisers with low alcohol content in preventing COVID-19.

“Not all hand sanitisers in the market are capable of killing the COVID-19 virus because the alcohol contents are low,’’ the pharmacist told Our Correspondent on telephone in Ibadan on Tuesday.

According to him, hand sanitiser capable of killing the virus must have 40 per cent alcohol content.

“When at home, it’s preferred you use hand washing method: It’s better to use the hand wash in a running tap for 20 seconds when at home,’’ he said.

Fajuyitan, however, cautioned against ingesting of hand sanitiser.

“Hand sanitisers contain majorly glycerine and ethanol.

“ Hand sanitiser contains 62 per cent ethyl alcohol and that’s the equivalent of four shots of vodka.

“At that concentration, even a small dose can be dangerous if ingested,’’ Fajuyitan said.

According to him, the ingestion can lead to dizziness, slurred speech, headaches and even brain damage or death in extreme cases.

“Also ocular irritation, vomiting, conjunctivitis, oral irritation, cough and abdominal pain.

“Rare effects included coma, seizure, hypoglycemia metabolic acidosis and respiratory depression may occur.

“Majority of the hand sanitisers produced in Nigeria don’t even have up to 62 per cent ethyl alcohol.

“If you eat with your hands after using hand sanitiser, be cautious as excessive use of sanitiser can make you prone to viral infections as removal of bacteria give ample space for the virus to grow and sanitisers are not capable of denaturing viruses,’’ he said.
