    Again, gunmen kill 13 people in Plateau

     Gunmen have again killed 13 people, including two women at Kwatas village in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau.

    An eye-witness, who pleaded not to be named, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Bokkos that 11 of the victims were young people.

    The killing occurred late on Sunday.

    The Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, ASP. Abu Gabriel, confirmed the incident, the latest of such incident in Plateau State within a fortnight.

    Gabriel told NAN that he was making a trip to the village to ascertain the situation. He called for calm, promising to talk more on the incident after assessing the situation.

    Another source in Kwatas told NAN that “the attackers took us by surprise as they swooped on the village just when we were about to go to bed on Sunday.

    “We heard gun shots which created fear in people, making us to run for cover.

    “Unfortunately, 13 people were killed by the assailants, who also burnt some houses.’’

    The Special Task Force Commander, Maj.-Gen. Augustine Agundi, also confirmed the incident, describing it as “very unfortunate’’.

    Agundi said that troops of the task force had been deployed in the area, noting that efforts were being made to track down the perpetrators of the crime.

    He called for calm, assuring people of the community and environs of adequate protection.

    A former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr Titus Alams, who is also a native of Bokkos, described the killing as “barbaric, cruel and uncalled for.

    “What on earth could be the offence of our people to warrant such wicked attacks on us?’’

    He called on the state and Federal Governments to take steps to curtail the incessant killing of people in Plateau.

    Also speaking, the Chairman of the Plateau State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Mr Ezekiel Vondip, condemned the killing.

    “The people being killed in attacks in Plateau State are human beings and not chickens. Therefore, the Federal Government must put a stop to the killings,’’ he stated.

    Late Ezekiel Afon, member-elect for Pengana Constituency in the Plateau House of Assembly, was on Thursday buried in Bassa Local Government amid tears.

    Afon, who was a serving member of the State Assembly died on March 10, shortly after he was declared re-elected for another term.

    Gov Simon Lalong who spoke at the funeral service, promised that the state government would pay the school fees of his four children.

    “We will pay the children’s school fees for the period we will be in office.

    “We will also take up his plans and wishes and assist the Church to be remodeled.

    “He represented his constituency very well in the Plateau State House of Assembly.

    “We wanted more of his kind in the House, but God called and we cannot question God.’’

    Lalong urged the wife of the deceased lawmaker to be courageous and look unto God, whom he said was the great comforter.

    Mr Joshua Madaki, Speaker, Plateau House of Assembly, in a tribute described late Afon as a man of multidimensional values.

    Madaki further described his late colleague as a mediator among members of the house.

    “As men of God, we have the responsibility to stand in the gap created in the family.

    “We have the responsibility to pick the bills he left,’’ he said.
    The bereaved wife, Mary Afon, said that she and the children would greatly miss the man she described as her husband, father and teacher.

    She said that she had learnt a lot from him since they got married as he was an intelligent, meticulous and patient person that the paid attention to every detail.

    Mrs Afon appealed to the people of Pengana constituency to uphold and sustain the peace that her late husband worked for.

    Rev. James Ibun, Senior Pastor, Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) in a sermon, urged all men to make their ways right with God.

    Ibun said that God would on the last day judge men based on their deeds on earth.
