Ukraine: FG Postpones Evacuation Flight From Poland To Nigeria

An Air Peace charter flight scheduled to evacuate Nigerians fleeing Ukraine from Poland on Thursday has been postponed.

According to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official, Bolaji Akinremi, the flight was postponed due to a delay in preparing passengers for the check-in process.

The flight has now been scheduled for Friday morning.

About 2,000 Nigerians have fled Ukraine, amid a Russian invasion, to neigbouring countries, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

The Federal Government on Wednesday said it has approved $8.5m for the evacuation of citizens.

According to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubairu Dada, the countries where the pickup flights would be headed include – Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania.

Two flights from Air Peace and one from Max Air are expected to carry out the evacuation exercise.

Russia-Ukraine Crisis: 256 Nigerians Have Been Received In Poland, Hungary, Romania – FG

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday said 130 Nigerians have been received by the country’s embassy in Romania.

In a statement, the ministry explained that it has also provided accommodation for them while arrangements are being made to take them back home.

“Also, officials at Budapest, Hungary have received and accommodated 74 Nigerians safely, where they are being documented for subsequent travel arrangements back to Nigeria,” the statement, signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, read.

According to him, another batch of about 200 Nigerians is expected in Budapest later in the day. He also said 52 persons have been received in Warsaw, Poland. Of the number, 23 are being processed at the Polish Government Reception Point at Hala Kijowska.

“The camp is well organised with beds and beddings, food, heating, clothing, and medicals for evacuees,” the statement added.

“We assure Nigerians that all hands are on deck and arrangements are being put in place to effectively evacuate our citizens, in safety and dignity.”

The Federal Government’s recent move was a sequel to the Russian invasion of Ukraine about five days ago. On Sunday, the ministry said the Hungarian and Romanian governments have approved visa-free access to Nigerians coming from the Eastern European nation.

“For now, movement to the Hungarian Zahony border and Romanian Suceava, Tulcea, Satu Mare County & Maramures borders is advised, as they have approved visa-free access to all Nigerians coming from Ukraine and arrangements for accommodation and feeding before evacuation is arranged,” Aduda said.

    Right To Safe Passage

On the same day, the presidency described reports of Nigerians being barred from exiting Ukraine as “unfortunate”. It said the government is concerned about the safety and human rights of all Nigerians.

“We understand the pain and fear that is confronting all people who find themselves in this terrifying place,” presidential aide, Garba Shehu, said in a statement.

“We also appreciate that those in official positions in security and border management will in most cases be experiencing impossible expectations in a situation they never expected. But, for that reason, it is paramount that everyone is treated with dignity and without favour.

“All who flee a conflict situation have the same right to safe passage under UN Convention and the colour of their passport or their skin should make no difference.”

Wijnaldum critical of Netherlands despite Poland win

Georginio Wijnaldum acknowledged there were points where the Netherlands did not look great in the victory against Poland.

The Netherlands came from behind to win 2-1 in Chorzow, but that was not enough to secure a return to the Nations League finals as Italy’s 2-0 victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina ensured they finished top of Group A1.

Kamil Jozwiak put Poland in front inside five minutes with an impressive solo goal, but Wijnaldum won a penalty that Memphis Depay converted in the 77th minute and then scored a deflected header to give Oranje a second win in six games under Ronald de Boer.

Poland were a potent threat on the break and match-winner Wijnaldum admitted they made the Netherlands look bad at points, saying the Dutch must improve if they are to do well at Euro 2020.

“I think this was one of our best matches. At the start we weren’t sharp and they were able to score early, but otherwise it was good,” Wijnaldum told NOS.

“Only in transition can we do better. Sometimes we just don’t look good. It’s hard to train on it. We don’t have much time to practise that sort of thing together between games.

“We have to make these steps as soon as possible if we want to do well at the European Championship. We did what we had to do.”

Poland’s Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski started the match despite being a doubt due to a muscular injury. He assisted Jozwiak’s goal and released Przemyslaw Placheta for a shot that hit the post before going off at half-time.

De Boer was disappointed his players did not heed his warning to focus from the off at Silesian Stadium but he was not too disappointed with the performance.

“I saw more positives than negatives,” De Boer said. “I warned the team beforehand that because of all that hassle with Robert Lewandowski over the past few days, I expected Poland would want to show something.

“You have to be sharp from the first second, but it seemed as though we were not. Defensively, it should definitely be better, we are going to work on that. You cannot start like that.

“After 1-0 we picked it up very well and created one chance after another. Then we showed what we can do. We have to work on everything, but I leave with a good feeling.

“It is also a well-deserved victory. They fought for it until the last second and I am proud of that. We have the willpower and have to keep it.”

Poland resumes domestic flights on Monday after COVID-19 hiatus

Poland on Monday resumed domestic flights, with the inaugural flight after the coronavirus hiatus safely landed in the north-western city of Szczecin, Poland’s flagship airline LOT said.

As of Monday, LOT resumed flights from Warsaw to seven cities in the country as well as between Gdansk and Krakow, a total of 30 flights per day.

“Air travel resumes under a new sanitary regime to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“Only passengers are allowed to enter terminals and all of them have their temperature measured.

“Keeping a distance of 1.5 metres from others and wearing face masks is obligatory, including on the plane.

“On LOT flights only every second seat can be taken,’’ it noted.

Poland suspended passenger air travel in mid-March.

After that, only special flights to bring back citizens stranded abroad were allowed.

Some 55,000 citizens travelled back home that way.

Cargo flights went on uninterrupted amid the pandemic.

While domestic passenger flights resumed, the ban on international air travel is in force until June 6.

According to the report, LOT plans to resume international flights as of June 14.

In 2019, Polish airports serviced some 49 million passengers, up by 7 per cent year on year.
