Recent Prison Attacks Organised to Ridicule FG – Aregbesola

Rauf Aregbesola, minister of interior, says correctional facilities in the country are attacked to ridicule the federal government.

In recent months, gunmen have targeted some prisons, freed inmates and killed security operatives in the process.

The latest attack happened on Friday when the correctional facility in Abolongo, Oyo town, was attacked by gunmen.

Speaking on Sunday during a visit to the facility, the minister said those behind the attacks will be made to face justice.

“External attacks on custodial facilities were a rarity hitherto. What was common, and for which our system had been well primed, was an internal breach,” he said.

“But beginning with the spontaneous #EndSARS protests of last year which dovetailed into massive riots, there have been consistent attacks on our facilities in Owerri, Benin, Kabba, and now Oyo.

“This is not just some random happening. These are premeditated, planned and coordinated attacks meant to make Nigeria unsafe and ridicule the government.

“I’m assuring Nigerians that the federal government will pursue not just those who attacked our facility, but those who have escaped lawful custody.

“The attack was unconscionable. I commend officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service and other members of sister security agencies who provided perimeter security for our facility for fighting gallantly and holding the fort before the attackers were able to gain access to the awaiting trial section of the facility.

“However, those who escaped are already being pursued. Some have been rearrested; many more will still be captured.”

#EndSARS: “This Edo state prison break is fishy” Nigerians react to the prison break in Edo State

Nigerians have taken to Instagram and Twitter to react to the prison break which occurred in a prison popularly known as “White House” in Edo State.

Earlier today, videos of prisoners trooping out of a prison was shared online and it was claimed thugs hijacked the End SARS protests and released prisoners in Edo State.

Following the jail break, the state government  imposed a dusk to dawn curfew.

However, Nigerians suspect something fishy about the jail break and they’ve taken to different social media platforms to share their opinions.

Some accused the state government of staging the jail break to get End SARS protesters off the streets. Others asked how the prisoners left through the open gates without resistance from prison guards. Others pointed out that the prisoners were all dressed in mufti, not in prison uniforms, as though it had been planned.

Lauren Idahosa, the wife of Bishop Feb Idahosa, also questioned the prison break, writing: “How come we haven’t heard one story by now about prison staff being killed or injured due to the prison breaks here in Benin? Warden, something doesn’t seem right. In the process of your prisoners escape, there wasn’t one injury?”

She added: “Anyone else sense something fishy here?”
