  • BREAKING: Court stops INEC from Ending PVC Registration

BREAKING: Court stops INEC from Ending PVC Registration

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from ending voter registration on June 30, 2022.

Honourable Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon (Court 10) on Monday granted an order of interim injunction following the hearing of an argument on motion exparte by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, disclosed this in a statement forwarded to DAILY POST today.

SERAP and 185 concerned Nigerians had early this month filed the lawsuit against INEC, asking the court to “declare unconstitutional, illegal, and incompatible with international standards the failure of the electoral body to extend the deadline for voter registration to allow eligible Nigerians to exercise their rights.”

In the suit, SERAP had asked the court for “an order restraining INEC, its agents, privies, assigns, or any other person(s) claiming through it from discontinuing the continuous voters’ registration exercise from the June 30 2022 or any other date pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

The suit is adjourned to June 29, 2022, for the hearing of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.

The suit followed the decision by INEC to extend the deadline for the conduct of primaries by political parties by 6 days, from June 3 to June 9.

In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1034/2022 filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos, and transferred to Abuja, SERAP is seeking the court to determine “whether the failure of INEC to extend the deadline for voter registration isn’t a violation of Nigerian Constitution, 1999 [as amended], the Electoral Act, and international standards.”

The organization is also asking the court for “an order of mandamus to direct and compel INEC to extend voter registration by a minimum of three months and take effective measures to ensure that eligible Nigerians are able to register to exercise their right to vote in the 2023 general elections.”

INEC to start distribution of PVCs next Month

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed that it will start the distribution of Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, next month ahead of the July 16 governorship election in Osun State.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Professor AbdulGaniyu Raji, disclosed this to newsmen at the implementation programme on voter education held for electoral officers in Osogbo, yesterday.

He lamented that over 370,000 PVCs from the previous voters’ registration exercise have not been collected.

He said: “A lot of Permanent Voter Cards have not been collected, up till now. We don’t know the reason we have that apathy, why people are not coming to collect them despite all the necessary publicity that we are making. We have over 370,000 PVC, for those between 2011 and 2018 that are yet to be collected.

“But for those who have just registered, between June last year and March this year, PVCs for those who registered during the first and second quarters, June till December 2021, are already with us.

“We are waiting for the delivery of the ones for the third quarter, this week. That is why we have not rolled out the PVCs. We don’t want a situation where some people will come and wouldn’t find their PVCs. So, by next week, hopefully, we will roll out all the cards for all those who registered between June last year and March this year.

“The cards are ready, they have been printed but we have taken delivery of the first and second quarters and third quarters will be delivered to us this week.”

  • Tinubu Apologises For ‘Incorrect Statement’ On INEC’s PVC

Tinubu Apologises For ‘Incorrect Statement’ On INEC’s PVC

Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has apologised for saying Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) can expire.

Mr Tinubu, who has signalled his intention to run for President in 2023, made the claim on Tuesday while speaking to a delegation of women from Lagos across the country.

However, an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked the claim, noting that previously registered PVCs remain valid for voting in 2023.

In a statement on Wednesday, a spokesperson to Mr. Tinubu, Tunde Rahman, said the comment was a mistake.

“On Tuesday night in Abuja, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu granted audience to a delegation of women from Lagos and across the country attending the All Progressives Congress Women Conference,” the statement said.

“While charging the women to check the status of their voting cards and mobilise supporters to vote, he mistakenly used the word ‘expire’ instead of stating that the cards may have to be updated.

“Immediately upon being apprised of this, Asiwaju apologised for the incorrect statement and felt sorry for any confusion it may have caused.

“Asiwaju Tinubu also stressed that he appreciates the patriotic and necessary work of INEC and its personnel in assuring a free and fair electoral process for all Nigerians in all political parties.

“At the meeting convened at the behest of the women, Asiwaju emphasized the need for people to fully participate in elections so we strengthen our democracy. He urged them to continue to mobilise voters to update their PVCs and help thwart the prevailing voter-apathy. Women must mobilise heavily to reverse the trend, he said.

“The gap between those who registered for elections and those who usually turned up to pick their PVCs was wide, adding that such constitutes a serious challenge, which may impede the growth of our democracy.

“Asiwaju Tinubu would like to reiterate this call to women to mobilise at the grassroots levels so that elections reflect the sovereign will of all the people for a true democracy to be established.

“He enjoins them to review their voting details with INEC so that these details will be updated before the coming elections.”

  • PVCs remains Valid and have not expired -INEC Rebuke Tinubu

PVCs remains Valid and have not expired -INEC Rebuke Tinubu

The Independent National Electoral Commission has countered a claim by a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, that Permanent Voters’ Cards have expired.

Tinubu had made the claim while addressing women leaders of the APC who paid him a visit in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The former governor of Lagos State also lamented that there had been a decline in the number of eligible voters in recent times.

Reacting, Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman of INEC, Prof Bolade Eyinla, stated that PVCs previously registered remain valid.

This is as he advised those who already have PVCs not to bother about registering for another one.

“This information is not correct. The PVC issued to all previously registered voters remains valid. This kind of statement will certainly push eligible voters to register more than once thereby creating the problem of double and multiple registrations,” he said as quoted by Daily Trust.

Buttressing Eyinla’s point, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi, pointed out that registering for PVC more than once is an offence under the law.

“In fact, double registration is an offence under our laws. Eligible Nigerians are entitled to register only once. Once a name appears on the National Register of Voters, it stays there permanently.

“One of the very few instances where a name could be removed from the register is if there’s a strong and verifiable proof that the person bearing the name has died,” Oyekanmi said.
