23-year-old bags life imprisonment for raping Lagos teenager

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Special Offences Court has sentenced a 23-year-old man, Blessing Okon, to life imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old girl.

The prosecutor, while arraigning Okon before the court, said he committed the offence on September 13, 2019, on Ribadu Road, off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos State.

During the trial, the prosecution called three witnesses — the victim, her father and a medical doctor. Okon testified solely in his defence.

The victim, during her evidence, told the court that the convict sexually assaulted her when she was nine years old by touching her breasts on two occasions.

She added that he defiled her when she was 14 years old by dragging her to the staircase of her home and having unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

Delivering her judgment, Justice Soladoye, who noted that the victim was consistent in her evidence before the court which established that the defendant had been having sexual contact with her since she was nine years old, described the convict as shameless.

She said, “This defendant is lacking in compassion; he had sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl. There was overwhelming evidence against him as presented by the prosecution. He therefore should pay for his sexual crime.

“He is guilty of Section 137 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State and is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without an option of fine. His name is to be entered into the register of sexual offenders in Lagos State.”

Justice Soladoye commended the chaplain of the victim’s school who reported the incident for listening to the teenager’s complaints and reporting the case to the authorities without any cover-up.

She urged heads of other schools to do the same.

The victim immediately left the reception, went to the backyard of the hotel to get the towel and was on her way to attend to the guest when she felt the urge to relieve herself.

The victim, who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday, said she decided to urinate at the general toilet at the backyard when Fuad accosted her inside the toilet.

She said, “He wore only his underpants when he blocked me inside the toilet. I saw a bottle with him and he said if I refused to have sex with him, he would use the bottle to kill me. He raped me inside the toilet and after he was done, he left me there. The incident happened between 12 midnight and 1am on Saturday when everybody was asleep.

“I was also asleep until one of our customers woke me up and said that he needed a towel. I was the one who attended to him (Fuad) when he came with his girlfriend to lodge in our hotel. 19-year-old Girl Wants Surname Changed After Being Raped By Her

A 19-year-old secondary school girl simply identified as Linda has insisted that her surname be changed after she was allegedly raped by her father.

Linda, while narrating the harrowing experience she allegedly suffered in the hands of her father who she identified as Akanni, said he raped her in 2019, threatening that she would die if she exposed it to anyone.

She spoke in an interview with newsmen at the Lagos State Police Command.

She said, “Words cannot narrate the trauma and pains I suffered.”

Following the rape incidents, Linda is appealing to her mother to change her surname, failure of which she might commit suicide.

She said, “Sometime in 2019, I went to stay with my aunty (paternal) in Ilogbo Ifo, Ogun. My father came to see his sister. There was a day he called me into the room and immediately I got inside he shut the door. He used his hands to cover my mouth and told me not to shout. Even if I had shouted, nobody would have heard me.

“He raped me and told me not to tell anyone or I would die. I kept the rape to myself, but I couldn’t bear it any more. So I spoke up and my mother got to know.

“So I want government to punish him for what he did to me, but he should be made to pay for my university education.”

The girl’s mother, Ayinde Rasheedat, said she brought the matter to the attention of her estranged husband but that he denied it.

“Something terrible happened on 28th December 2019. When Mr Akanni Nurudeen, her father, forcefully raped her and threatened her to keep the secret or die miserably. I got to know this when my daughter asked me to allow her change her surname. She narrated the rape to my sister, Mrs Lateefat, and my sister told me about it.”

When contacted, Mr Akanni denied the allegation, saying, “I never raped my daughter. This is the handiwork of my estranged wife. As I am speaking with you, I am paralysed. I was involved in an accident in November, 2019. That accident paralysed me. The allegation is false and I am hearing it from you for the first time.”

7 elderly men allegedly gang-rape 12-year-old mentally disabled girl in Sokoto, brag they have high profile politicians behind them

Family Seeks Justice For 12-Year-Old Sokoto Rape Victim

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Sokoto State, Suleiman Usman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), on Friday, said the state government had put in place, a formidable team of lawyers to prosecute a rape case involving a 12-year-old girl.

Usman said he would personally lead the team in order to ensure that justice is done for the victim, who is mentally disabled.

He ruled out any favour to the suspects, who are alleged to be the “boys’’ of some high profile politicians in the state.

Usman explained that the delay in prosecuting the case was caused by efforts to establish a strong case against the suspects.

It was reported that the girl was allegedly raped by seven elderly men, who threatened to kill her if she exposed them.

The mother of the girl, Hajiya Jamila Tudun Wada, told Daily Trust that the suspects took advantage of her daughter’s condition to violate her.

Some of the suspects who allegedly committed the act were identified as Lele and Mohammed, who allegedly lured the girl to an uncompleted building.

According to her, the suspects were earlier arraigned before a magistrate’s court, which remanded them as they awaited a legal advice from the state’s Ministry of Justice.

“We did not know what happened thereafter, but we started seeing them in the streets.

“Some of them even came to our residence, bragging that they were out and we would not do anything about it because they had some prominent politicians behind them,’’ she said.

She was, however, optimistic that with the involvement of the commissioner, the suspects would get what they bargained for.
