Djinee blames parents in reaction to rape, murder of Uwaila Omozuwa

Singer Djinee has joined the voices in condemnation of the rape and killing of a student of the University of Benin, Uwaila Omozuwa.

Uwaila Omozuwa was found in a critical condition inside the church where she went to read at night.

Her head was bleeding after it was bashed with a fire extinguisher by unknown men who also raped her.

She later gave up the ghost after she was rushed to a hospital for attention.

Djinee who took to Twitter in reaction stated that parents are to blame for the way make children have turned out.

Djinee wrote: “Uwa’s story breaks me. We all have to admit that our parents have failed woefully in the raising of the male child. Concentrating too much on the conduct of the female child when it’s actually the males who have the higher propensity to do evil! #JusticeForUwa

“When rape happens especially when it is as vicious as this, I ask myself that how has parenting/upbringing played its part to encourage the act?

“We have to understand how a system (be it parenting, legal, cultural or societal) increases the TENDENCY of a crime happening to a particular gender, race, ethnicity or religious belief more than the other(s). Most times you’ll find your root cause there.

“I’m sorry. I have sisters and cousins and I fear for them daily. One of my sisters was the reason I moved to a secure gated community after an incident, costing me ×5 in expenses. Even at that, I still worry.

“Today it is Uwa. Y’day it was someone else. 2moro it might be som1 we know. A friend who was gangraped in the past is living with HIV today. There is no way Uwa’s sad incident won’t bring up the fact that our women are an endangered gender. You cant isolate crime from culture.

“The whistles, cat calls & groping in some cases. We saw this even as teenagers in secondary schools. Boys just being boys. Let’s be honest we weren’t told to rape. Majority of us weren’t told “DO NOT GROPE, MAKE CAT CALLS LET ALONE RAPE”.

  • 4 men executed in India for 2012 Delhi gang rape, murder

4 men executed in India for 2012 Delhi gang rape, murder

Four men were executed on Friday for the brutal gang rape and murder of a young woman in the Indian capital in 2012.

The men were hanged to death in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, a jail official confirmed.

A lone hangman carried out the executions after courts rejected last-minute pleas by the convicts’ lawyers, with the hearings going till late Thursday night.

“Our daughter has finally got justice, I thank the judiciary, the government,” the rape victim’s mother, Asha Devi, said outside the jail, where a large crowd gathered.

They broke into cheers as news of the hanging was confirmed.

The 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped and heavily injured on a moving bus in the Indian capital on Dec. 16, 2012, sparking mass protests and an international outcry.

She died nearly two weeks later at a Singapore hospital.

“It has been a long fight for justice. I dedicate this day to all daughters of this country, we will continue the battle,” Asha Devi added.

Nirbhaya’s father Badrinath Singh said his family would be meeting lawyers to identify grey areas in the trial procedure that came up with this case and push to address them.

The death warrants were issued for the first time on Jan. 7 and were deferred four times as lawyers used various legal options to delay the hangings.

Nirbhaya – “fearless” in Hindi – was the name given by the media to the physiotherapy student by the Indian media as a rape victim cannot be named under Indian law.

Six men, including one who was a juvenile at the time of the crime, were accused.

Ram Singh, who was the bus driver and one of the perpetrators, allegedly committed suicide in Tihar jail at the beginning of the trial.

The juvenile was let off in 2015 after three years in a reform home. This is the maximum punishment permissible for a juvenile.

The others – Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh were sentenced to death by a trial court in 2013. This was upheld by higher courts.

Mukesh Singh was bus driver Ram Singh’s brother and Akshay Thakur was his assistant. Vinay Sharma was a gym assistant and Pawan Gupta a fruit vendor.

All of them lived in the Ravi Dass slum in south Delhi. They were aged between 20 and 30 at the time of the crime.

According to jail procedures, the bodies are to be taken for post mortem and then handed over to their families.

The jail authorities will make arrangements for cremation if relatives do not want the bodies, Tihar Jail spokesman Raj Kumar said earlier.

A death sentence is very rare in India and the sentence being carried out is even more infrequent.

Five men have been executed since 1995, three of them terrorists.

Despite stricter laws and measures to increase security for women since the Delhi gang rape, a high number of such crimes continues to be reported in India.

According to the latest government data available, 33,356 women and girls were raped in India in 2018.

Activists say many more rapes go unreported. (dpa/NAN)

  • Workshop warns on dangers of stigmatisation of rape victims

Workshop warns on dangers of stigmatisation of rape victims

Speakers at a workshop on “Women’s sexual reproductive health and rights,” organised by Ipas Nigeria, an international non-profit organisation, has warned on the dangers of stigmatisation of victims of rape and other sexual violence in Nigeria.
The Policy and Advocacy Adviser of the organisation, Mrs Doris Ikpeze, gave the warning in her presentation on Thursday – day two of the four-day workshop in Owerri – entitled, “Unseen hands and consequences of sexual violence.”
Ikpeze said that many rape victims had been compelled to engage in untoward acts, including suicide and unsafe abortion, where pregnancy resulted from rape, because of the fear of stigmatisation by the society.
According to her, victims of rape already have a lot of consequential effect of sexual violence to grapple with.
Ikpeze therefore opined that societal stigmatisation against them would further worsen their plight.
She further said that stigmatisation was largely responsible for why people hardly open up, when they fall victim of rape and incest.
She said that rape or sexual violence also had other consequences on the victim, including physical suffering, change in behavioural, psychological and reproductive health of the victim.
She further said that the development could also result in withdrawal syndrome, self blame and distrust for other people.
The former Country Director of Ipas, Mrs Hauwa Shekarau, who spoke on “Nigeria’s International Commitment to Women’s Health”, said that women’s health should be both policy and human rights issue.
Shekarau, Executive Director, Women Law and Development Inititiative, said that Nigeria was a signatory to some international treatise and conventions, including The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (1979) and Banjul Declaration.
Others are Viena Declaration on Human Rights (1993), International Conference on Population and Development programme action (1994) and Beijing 1995, among others.
She therefore urged the government to enforce women health laws so that issues of sexual violence, maternal mortally and unsafe abortion could be effectively addressed. (NAN)
