Rashford picked out as England’s best player

Marcus Rashford has been picked out as England’s best player by international colleague Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the in-form Everton striker admitting to being a big fan of the Manchester United forward and Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski.

Inspiration can be found across Europe for those looking to forge their own successful career in the final third of the field.

Calvert-Lewin falls into that category, with the 23-year-old unlocking the potential in his game that has been apparent for several seasons.

He has become a regular source of goals for his club in the Premier League, with an impressive return of 11 efforts through nine games in 2020-21 earning him a senior England call-up.

The Toffees star has already found the target for his country and forms part of an exciting attacking unit with the Three Lions that boasts the considerable talent of key men such as Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho.

Asked to make his selection as the cream of England’s crop, Calvert-Lewin told FIFA’s official website: “For me, Marcus Rashford. I’d seen a lot of him and he’s an unbelievable player, but I’d never played with him and he was even better than I thought.

“He’s got everything: pace, power, skill. He’s so sharp, clinical in front of goal. He can finish, he can head.

“As a centre-forward, playing alongside someone like that fills you with the utmost confidence you can beat whoever you play against. I’ve got no doubt he’s going to be a top, top player for many years.”

When spreading the net a little wider, Calvert-Lewin named a prolific presence at Bayern Munich as his pick as the finest player on the planet.

He added: “Robert Lewandowski. He scores so many goals.

“As a young centre-forward, if I’m to look along the line of top centre-forwards, I would look at Robert Lewandowski and study his game and see what positions he gets in, because I feel he’s got similar attributes to what I have.”

Calvert-Lewin’s claims to joining the global elite should be aided by the added quality being brought in alongside him at club level, with Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez one of those to have joined the ranks at Goodison Park.

“It’s only right that a club of Everton’s size, with where we want to go, attract that calibre of player,” said Calvert-Lewin.

“For me personally, I was just really excited because I was aware of what he was capable of. I’d seen the great goals he’d scored and the big teams he’d played for.

“He’s a top, top player and for me, as a centre-forward, I knew chance creation would be there and it would be down to me to put the ball in the back of the net. It has been and I’m really enjoying playing with him.

“He’s a different level. He dictates games. He takes players out of games by taking touches. The way he manipulates the ball, he’s very hard to get it off – I don’t think I’ve seen him get tackled, even in training.”

Rashford accused of replicating Nani flaw at Man Utd

The Red Devils legend believes a jet-heeled winger should be looking to get in behind opposition defences without having to be told to make those runs

Marcus Rashford has the same flaw in his game as former Manchester United winger Nani once had, claims Paul Scholes, with the 23-year-old forward told he is not playing to his strengths.

The England international has fared admirably since breaking into the senior fold at Old Trafford.

Impressive progress on the field has delivered 74 goals through 225 appearances at club level and 40 caps for his country.

Rashford has also landed an MBE for his fine work off the pitch, which has seen him become a campaigner for political change, but the general consensus is that he could offer even more.

Scholes is among those to share that opinion, with the United legend often left frustrated when watching a clearly talented frontman in action.

For him, a player with such blistering pace should be looking to get behind opposition defences at every opportunity, with said moves being made without the need for instruction.

Former Red Devils winger Nani boasted similar qualities in his heyday, but the Portuguese was another who needed to be guided through matches and told where to be at any given time.

Scholes told BT Sport of Rashford: “Players need to know their strengths. Marcus’ strengths is running in behind, Mason Greenwood’s strength is running in behind because of his pace.

“Now if you’ve got time on the ball you should be able to play that ball over the top to them.

“If you’re a central midfielder for Manchester United you should be able to play that ball over the top. I’m not sure if Fred is. He might be.

“I was lucky enough to play with great forwards – Robin [van Persie], [Ruud] van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole, all players who ran in behind and you didn’t need to tell them.

“I probably only played with one player who you had to constantly tell – it was Nani. Nani had the strength to run in behind people but you had to keep telling him.”

“It looks like Marcus is the same. You’re the quick players in the team. You want to stretch the team.

“OK if it’s not on, if Fred can’t make the pass then create space for your [Paul] Pogbas, for your [Bruno] Fernandes, because the back four are pinned back. Sometimes Fred needs to demand more.”

Rashford drew a blank in his latest outing, as United suffered a demoralising 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League, but will be hoping to find a spark when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side take in a crucial visit to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday.

Rashford scores twice as United sink Mourinho’s Spurs

Jose Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford ended in defeat with Marcus Rashford scoring twice for Manchester United in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Mourinho was sacked as United manager almost a year ago and this was his first defeat in four games since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs last month.

United grabbed a seventh minute lead when Spurs defender Davinson Sanchez came off second best in a tussle with Jesse Lingard and the ball fell to Rashford, who confidently unleashed a low drive which rattled in off the post.

Rashford, in oustanding form, then had a dipping drive brilliantly tipped on to the bar by Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga and United created a series of good openings, playing some of their best football of the season so far.

But six minutes before the break, a Serge Aurier shot was saved by the legs of David De Gea.

The ball looped high in the air and Dele Alli produced a remarkable piece of skill to bring the ball down and twist past Fred and Ashley Young before finishing with aplomb.

It took only four minutes of the second half for United to regain their advantage.

Cutting in from the left, Rashford jinked past Aurier and burst into the box only to be tripped by Moussa Sissoko, earning a penalty.

He took the spot kick himself from a short run-up and slotted home. (Reuters/NAN)
