Senegal beat Togo as Guinea Bissau and Guinea draw

Senegal secured a 2-0 victory over Togo at the Lat Dior Stadium in Thies on Wednesday, in Group H’s opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Sadio Mane and Abdou Diallo scored the two goals for the Teranga Lions as they started their campaign for a ticket to Qatar on a high note.

The Senegalese had a bright start to the match and asked the first questions from the Sparrow Hawks.

Fifteen minutes into the game, Papa Matar Sarr should have done better with a pass off Gana Gueye, but his control let him down with good space in front of him.

Mane and Boulaye Dia were also threatening for the Senegalese, but they could not find the back of the net, as the two teams went to the break tied at 0-0.

Senegal came back with all claws on and they got into the lead in the 56th minute.

Mane, the 2019 CAF African Player of the year, played a quick interchange of passes with Dia before controlling the ball with his left and firing home on his right.

The Senegalese kept their command on the game but they had to wait till the 80th minute to seal the game.

Diallo hit the back of the net with a sumptuous shot on his national team debut.

The Senegalese, finalists at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held on for the win to earn an advantage from match day one.

Namibia and Congo will play in the other group match on Thursday.

Meanwhile, at Nouakchott’s Olympic Stadium in Mauritania, Guinea Bissau and Guinea played to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining Group I fixture.

Guinea Bissau’s Djurtus have been forced to play their home matches in Mauritania.

This is because their home turf, the Estadio Nacional 24 de Setembro, is yet to pass the necessary approvals to host international matches.

In Nouakchott, Guinea Bissau found themselves trailing after seven minutes when Francois Kamano broke the deadlock for the Syli Nationale.

But Guinea Bissau gave a fight and just a minute into the second half got back into contention with the equaliser, coming off Joseph Mendes.

Morocco and Sudan, will play the group’s other match on Thursday.

Senegal shuts schools amid violent unrest

Schools in Senegal will shut until March 15, the education ministry said on Sunday, after days of violent protests that have paralyzed parts of the capital Dakar and are expected to continue next week.

At least five people have died in demonstrations sparked by the arrest of Ousmane Sonko, Senegal’s most prominent opposition leader on Wednesday .

It is the worst political unrest in years in a country widely seen as one of West Africa’s most stable.

Sonko, who enjoys strong support among the young, was arrested after an employee of a beauty salon accused him of raping her. Sonko denied the allegation and said it is politically motivated.

Opponents of President Macky Sall have called for further protests on Monday.

Much of Dakar turned into a war zone last week as police clashed with thousands of angry protesters. Many shops, gas stations and banks were closed for days. Large queues formed for petrol and groceries on Sunday, during what is expected to be a brief respite in the unrest.

Political pressure has mounted on President Sall, whose presidency has been plagued by accusations that he unjustly torpedoes political rivals and worries that he may seek to extend his rule beyond his allotted two-term limit.

Pressure increased on Saturday after a 17-year-old boy was killed by gunfire in southern Senegal.

The influential League of Imams and Preachers of Senegal on Sunday called for the release of Sonko and a “return to calm”.

  • Senegal, IOC agree to postpone Youth Olympics Dakar 2022 to 2026

Senegal, IOC agree to postpone Youth Olympics Dakar 2022 to 2026

Senegal and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have mutually agreed to postpone the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2022 to 2026.

This is contained in a statement on the committee’s website on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the agreement was approved on Wednesday by the IOC Executive Board, and will be submitted to the IOC Session for ratification on Friday, July 17.

”President Macky Sall’s proposal was welcomed by IOC President Thomas Bach following in-depth discussions on the subject.

”This postponement meets the requirement of responsibility and the concern for efficiency imposed by current circumstances.

”The postponement of Dakar 2022 allows the IOC, the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the International Federations (IFs) to better plan their activities.

”There activities have been strongly affected by the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, by the subsequent postponements of major international sports events, and by the operational and financial consequences of the global health crisis.

”At the same time, it allows Senegal to carry on the excellent preparations for the Youth Olympic Games.

”The two leaders, who praised the progress made so far, have jointly renewed their confidence in Dakar 2022.

“President Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, IOC Member in Senegal, and both remain fully committed to the great success of these Youth Olympic Games, the first Olympic event ever to be organised in Africa,” the statement read.

It said that the IOC and Senegal understood that this news would be disappointing for many young athletes.

”Both parties can only appeal to their understanding.

“This agreement results from the large scale of the operational challenges which the IOC, the NOCs and the IFs are facing following the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

”With this in mind, the IOC will continue to offer all IFs and NOC Continental Associations the full content of the educational programmes of the Youth Olympic Games.

”This will allow for the objectives of this very important and much-appreciated component of the YOG to be maintained through the many events organised between now and 2026, in particular during the Continental Youth Games.

“This amicable agreement illustrates the mutual trust between Senegal and the IOC.

”I would like to express my sincere thanks to President Macky Sall, a great friend and supporter of the Olympic Movement for this exceptional relationship of trust and quality.

”For all these reasons, I am sure that, together, we will organise fantastic Youth Olympic Games, Dakar 2026 for Senegal, the entire African continent and all the young athletes of the world,” the statement quoted Bach as saying. (NAN)
