Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation Of Service Chiefs

Bola Tinubu has written the Senate, seeking for the screening and subsequent confirmation of the new Chief of Defence Staff and service chiefs.

The request was contained in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Akpabio who read the letter on Tuesday during Plenary, said that the request was in line with the Act establishing the Armed Forces.

Recall that President Tinubu had, last month, appointed Major General Christopher Musa as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Major General bTaoreed Lagbaja as the chief of Army Staff.

Tinubu also appointed Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as the Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar as the Chief of Air Staff and Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye appointed the Chief of Defence Intelligence.

He urged the Red Chamber to consider his request expeditiously.

Akpabio, after reading the letter, referred the request to the Committee of the Whole as there was no Standing Committee on Armed Forces, just as this means

that the Service Chiefs would be screened on the floor of the Senate, not at the Committee level

When asked about his perception of the state of security since leaving office, the former Army boss said: “When you talk about military leadership, it is a continuum”.

“These gentlemen that took over from us are in a very good state to continue from where we stopped and apart from the initial challenges that started immediately we left, I think they have found the right synergy that is required to take the country out of the insecurity that we’ve been facing. By and large, change is inevitable and there are situations whereby you must always have new hands and fresh ideas. We have played our paths patriotically, diligently and to the best of our ability.

“We left quite proud and happy that things were stable and are still stable despite intermittent attacks here and there. But I believe that this crop of service chiefs are up to the task and they are no strangers to the security situation and of course, the armed forces,” Buratai added.

Others who reviewed the state of security in the country were Former Spokesman of the Army, Brigadier General Sani Usman, and the Former DIG Operations, Nigeria Police, Habila Joshak.

Make Sure Nothing Stops Anambra Election – Buhari Tells Service Chiefs

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered his Service Chiefs to make sure nothing stops the Anambra governorship election from holding.

The election has been scheduled for November 6.

Buhari’s order was confirmed by the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, while speaking with State House correspondents on Thursday.

This followed a security meeting the service chiefs had with Buhari at the presidential villa.

“The president has directed that under no circumstances will anything be allowed to stop the elections from taking place successfully. The people have a right to vote and select their leader.

“No group or individual will be allowed to stimulate anarchy and chaos, leading to murderous activities.

“The president has made it very clear that the armed forces and all law enforcement agencies must make sure that the elections take place, even if it means overwhelming the entire environment with the presence of security agencies.

“There are so many implications for elections to be sabotaged by non-state actors. In the first place, we are in a democracy; secondly, it is important to note that if these non-state actors should succeed in destroying the potentials for orderly elections, then it is natural that other parts of the country would also want to copy this same situation,” Monguno said.

Senate postpone meeting with Service Chiefs, IGP to Thursday

The Senate on Tuesday shifted its proposed meeting with Service Chiefs, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Inspector General of Police to Thursday.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan disclosed this at plenary.

Lawan said the security chiefs, who are supposed to brief the Senate, are still engaged at the National Security Council meeting which may extend till Wednesday.

He said: “The briefing will be very crucial, for us to be properly informed and properly guided.

“The only item on the Order Paper on Thursday will be the briefing.”

The Senate last Tuesday, after an exhaustive debate, resolved to invite the heads of the nation’s Armed Forces and other security agencies over the deteriorating security situation in the country.

It had also resolved its leadership should meet with President Muhammdu Buhari, to seek ways of mitigating the security challenges bedeviling the country.

Lawan said: “You will recall that on Wednesday we announced that the Chief of Defence Staff, the Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police and the DG NIA will be coming today at 11.00am to brief the Senate on the security situation.

“Today the National Security Council is continuing its meeting that it started last week. Therefore the invited security heads will not be able to come for the briefing.

“We are not sure if they will finish their meeting today. We assume it could spill to Wednesday too just like it spilled from Thursday to Tuesday.

“So to be on the side of caution, we have now fixed the date for the briefing to be Thursday, 6th May.

“I want to appeal to all of us that the briefing we will take from the Service Chiefs and other security agencies will be very crucial for us to be properly informed, properly guided and that if there is any request for supplementary budget, we should be able to understand why we should consider and approve such request.

“On Thursday, the only item on the order paper will be the briefing. We will do that as a special day for the engagement, the interaction between the Senate and the service.”
