Uzor Arukwe: Gerrard Kindled My Liverpool Passion

    By Daniel Edu

In an exclusive conversation with JOHNNY EDWARD, renowned actor Uzor Arukwe delves into his affection for Liverpool FC and Mohamed Salah, his basketball experiences, and more.

Did sports play a role in your upbringing?

Absolutely, I was actively engaged in both basketball and table tennis during my formative years. Basketball became a prominent part of my secondary school days, where we began learning the sport. University students from institutions like the University of Port Harcourt and UST would visit our school to play on our basketball courts. Additionally, naval officers, who were skilled table tennis players, imparted their expertise to us, sparking my interest in table tennis.

Which NBA basketball team captures your allegiance?

I have a fondness for the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic, and the Chicago Bulls.

Did your parents support your sports involvement?

My father was relatively indifferent as long as I focused on academics, while my mother was content with my sports participation.

Did football attract you during that time?

Although I occasionally joined street football matches known as “monkey post,” basketball was my true passion. I participated in street football due to peer interaction, but it never captivated me the way basketball did. At that time, basketball exuded a sense of elegance that football, now popularized by lucrative contracts, didn’t hold.

Do you favor any football team?

Certainly, I support Liverpool due to their aggressive style of play. Their impressive track record, including victories in the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League, garnered my admiration. The “You’ll Never Walk Alone” spirit resonated with me. Previously, I leaned towards Chelsea by association with my friends, who are fervent Chelsea fans. Yet, over time, I transitioned into a Liverpool fan. Steven Gerrard significantly influenced my fondness for Liverpool; his unexpected and remarkable shots on goal captivated me.

Moreover, Mohamed Salah is a major factor in my Liverpool devotion. His explosive speed and ability to penetrate defenses are captivating. Other former Reds players like Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino, and their new captain Virgil Van Dijk also hold my respect. Salah’s and Mané’s humility appeals to me.

    Your most memorable Liverpool moment?

Though the last season’s performance left much to be desired, I remain hopeful for the upcoming one. Naturally, every victory exhilarates me, while losses disappoint. The draw against Chelsea in their opening match pleased me somewhat. I anticipate a victorious start to the season against Bournemouth this Saturday.

When did you decide to pursue acting?

Acting has always been my aspiration. While I dabbled in it as a teenager, I dreamt of making it my profession. After a decade in the corporate world—five years in telecommunications and another five in sport equipment retail—I embraced professional acting.

What challenges did you confront in the industry?

I confronted skepticism and underestimation, as people were uncertain of my capabilities. I needed to demonstrate my competence and skill. Acting remuneration was also discouraging; a role could yield as little as N1,000. But like any industry, persistence and consistency were vital.

Amid the surge of actors in Nollywood, what distinguishes you?

Each actor possesses a unique style and identity. As time passes, my contributions will be recognized. I perceive myself as a versatile actor capable of embracing diverse roles. Comedy, drama, or any genre—I am prepared to excel in all.

Handling admirers, especially female fans, as a handsome actor?

I remain focused on my craft. Both male and female audiences appreciate my work, for which I am grateful. I acknowledge their support and move forward. Sometimes, they confuse my on-screen personas with my real self.

    Any awkward moments on stage?

During a fight scene, a colleague accidentally struck my groin, causing me to fall. The natural pain overtook my acting, revealing my genuine reaction.

Your proudest achievement as an actor?

To date, it’s the steady growth in my career. Transitioning into full-time acting in 2018, I garnered two nominations for the same category at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards by 2020. This remains a significant achievement.

  • Napoli president sets condition for Osimhen’s departure

Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has announced a fresh two-year contract proposal for star striker Victor Osimhen, but he also acknowledged the possibility of the Nigerian leaving if the club receives an irresistible offer. While no specific amount was mentioned, Napoli will entertain offers for Osimhen only if they exceed €100m.Following an impressive season with Napoli, Nigerian international Victor Osimhen has garnered significant attention from several top European clubs vying for his signature. Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille in 2020 for a club and African record fee of €75m, still has two years remaining on his current contract with the Italian club.According to Fabrizio Romano, Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has stated, “We have reached an agreement in principle with Victor Osimhen to extend his contract for two additional years.” However, de Laurentiis also added that if an exceptionally high bid that cannot be turned down materializes, the club will carefully consider the situation and make the best decision for the club’s interests.Osimhen showcased his goal-scoring prowess during the previous season, netting an impressive tally of 26 league goals for Napoli, including the decisive goal that secured the title. Additionally, the former Lille player contributed five goals in six Champions League matches, culminating in a remarkable total of 31 goals across all competitions.

Chelsea beats Man City to win Champions League

Chelsea has won the Champions League for the second time after beating Manchester City in a thrilling final in Porto.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal just before half-time, running on to Mason Mount’s excellent ball before knocking it past Ederson and then rolling into the empty net.

City, who were looking to win the competition for the first time, never really showed the imposing dominance that had brought them the 2020-21 Premier League title, with Pep Guardiola’s bold team selection having failed to come off.

The former Barcelona boss had left Fernandinho and Rodri on the bench as he named an attacking line-up but they struggled to take control of midfield in their absence.

They did have a good chance to score before Havertz’s goal but Antonio Rudiger made an excellent block to deny Phil Foden.

Riyad Mahrez flashed a shot just wide in the final seconds but it was not to be for City as Chelsea held firm to claim the trophy.

Chelsea vs Man City: UEFA confirms new venue for Champions League final

The 2020/21 UEFA Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City has been officially moved from Istanbul to Porto.

UEFA disclosed this on Thursday in a statement via its website.

The Europe football governing body said the Estadio do Dragao will now host the all-English final on May 29 after Turkey was placed on the UK’s high-risk ‘red list’ for international travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chelsea had eliminated Real Madrid in the semi-final encounter, while Man City knocked PSG out from the tournament.

“The final was originally scheduled to take place at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul but, following the UK government’s decision to place Turkey on its red list of COVID-19 travel destinations, staging the final there would have meant none of the clubs’ domestic fans would be able to travel to the game.

“After a year of fans being locked out of stadiums, UEFA thought that everything needed to be done to ensure the supporters of the two finalist teams could attend.

“UEFA discussed moving the match to England but, despite exhaustive efforts on the part of the Football Association and the authorities, it was not possible to achieve the necessary exemptions from UK quarantine arrangements,” UEFA’s statement read in part.

UEFA Champions League: Manchester City fight back to beat PSG

Manchester City took a big step towards qualifying for their first UEFA Champions League final on Wednesday with a 2-1 win at Paris St.Germain (PSG).

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez earned them the comeback win in the semi-final first leg match.

PSG went ahead courtesy of a Marquinhos header in the first half, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost control after the break.

De Bruyne and Mahrez found the back of the net respectively in the space of eight minutes to secure Manchester City’s 18th consecutive away win in all competitions.

Last year’s runners-up PSG then found themselves with a higher mountain to climb as they were reduced to 10 men.

Midfielder Idrissa Gueye picked up a straight red card in the 77th minute for a reckless challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.

The French champions will need to show next Tuesday the same away form which enabled them to succeed in earlier rounds, if they are to progress.

They beat FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou and Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in previous rounds.

Manchester City dominated the early possession but PSG were the more dangerous side with Brazilian forward Neymar testing goalkeeper Ederson twice.

Marquinhos, returning to the team from an injury suffered in the quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich, put the hosts in front.

That was when he headed home Angel Di Maria’s whipped corner-kick in the 15th minute.

Manchester City, overly cautious for fear of being punished on the break, were again exposed on a set-piece when Leandro Paredes headed Neymar’s corner-kick just wide.

Pep Guardiola’s side lacked their usual composure, with Joao Cancelo picking up a yellow card for a woeful challenge on Kylian Mbappe.

Manchester City’s first real chance came in the 42nd minute when Phil Foden, played infield by Bernardo Silva, shot too close to PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

The visitors were more attack-minded in the second half and they equalised after 64 minutes.

This was when De Bruyne, from a corner-kick by Oleksandr Zinchenko, who had just replaced Cancelo, sent in a cross.

Navas failed to react as it curled into the far corner of the net.

The goalkeeper was beaten again seven minutes later when Mahrez’s free-kick flew through an inadequate PSG wall.

Gueye’s dismissal for a wild tackle on Gundogan made Manchester City’s task easier and they will take a big advantage into the second leg in Manchester.

UEFA to discuss Champions League fate on Wednesday

UEFA will discuss the fate of this season’s Champions League and its other competitions that have been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic in a video conference meeting on Wednesday, European soccer’s governing body said in a statement.

All UEFA competitions have been halted because of the flu-like virus that has killed around 34,000 people, while this year’s European Championship has been pushed back to 2021.

“UEFA has invited the general secretaries of its 55 member associations to a video conference on Wednesday, April 1… to discuss options identified with regards to the potential rescheduling of matches,” UEFA said.

Player transfers and contracts will also be discussed at the meeting, it added.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said over the weekend that the current season could be lost if it is unable to re-start by the end of June, although he did not rule out extending it into the next season. (Reuters/NAN)
