EPL: Man Utd lose ground, draw West Brom 1-1

Manchester United have been held to a 1-1 draw away at West Brom in the English Premier League game played on Sunday.

Mbaye Diagne opened the scoring for the home side in the second minute of the game with a header beyond David Gea.

Bruno Fernandes equalised in the 44th minute for the visitors who couldn’t find a winner to keep their title hope alive.

United are now seven points behind Manchester City who still have a game in hand.

Bruno Fernandes’ stunning volley salvaged a point for Manchester United at struggling West Brom but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost further ground in the Premier League title race.

The Baggies took a shock lead after just 83 seconds as on-loan striker Mbaye Diagne outmuscled Victor Lindelof to head in from Conor Gallagher’s cross.

United were finding it difficult to make inroads in a lacklustre opening period until Fernandes hooked Luke Shaw’s cross into the top corner with his weaker left foot.

The visitors improved in the second half, Mason Greenwood testing Sam Johnstone with a low strike and Scott McTominay seeing his follow up cleared off the line.

With time running out, skipper Harry Maguire leapt to send his header towards the top corner, but Johnstone tipped the effort against the post to deny United an injury-time winner.

Sam Allardyce’s side could have won it themselves late on but Diagne struck his effort over the crossbar from six yards out.

Though they claimed a draw, West Brom remain in deep trouble at the wrong end of the table, second from bottom and 12 points from safety. BBCSports

  • EPL: Arsenal Thrash West Brom 4-0

EPL: Arsenal Thrash West Brom 4-0

Alexandre Lacazette scored twice as Arsenal further eased their early season struggles by thrashing West Brom 4-0 at a snow covered Hawthorns on Saturday.

After seven Premier League games without a win, the Gunners have now won three in a week to dampen talk of a relegation fight and move back into contention for the European places.

Kieran Tierney’s stunning solo goal opened the floodgates as Sam Allardyce’s men have now conceded nine times in two games.

Bukayo Saka rounded off a brilliant team move to double the visitors’ lead before Lacazette struck twice in four second-half minutes.

West Brom are yet to win in four games since Allardyce took charge and the former England manager needs to quickly instill the defensive discipline he has made his trademark at previous clubs if the Baggies are to have any chance of survival.

Just over a week ago Allardyce said Arsenal were in a battle against the drop, but Mikel Arteta’s decision to finally put faith in his crop of talented youngsters has turned his side’s season around.

Saka was again the shining light, while Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe also impressed.

Arsenal’s poor run was principally caused by a struggle to score goals, but they were a threat from the off despite the treacherous conditions.

Sam Johnstone denied Hector Bellerin and Saka inside the first 10 minutes, but he was powerless to stop Tierney’s stunning opener on 23 minutes.

The Scotland international left Darnell Furlong trailing in his wake before cutting inside onto his weaker right foot and curling into the top corner.

Arsenal’s second was reminiscent of their flowing football at the height of the Arsene Wenger era as Saka fed Lacazette, whose brilliant pass played Smith Rowe in behind the West Brom defence and he squared for Saka to tap into an empty net.

The one way traffic continued after the break and some comical West Brom defending led to the third as Semi Ajayi smashed a dangerous cross off his own post and the ball broke to Lacazette to apply a simple finish.

Moments later another raid from Tierney down the left teed up Lacazette for another finish from point-blank range.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has missed out on Arsenal’s return to scoring form over the past eight days as he turned a glorious chance from Willian’s mishit shot over before Johnstone produced another fine save from the Gunners’ captain.

However, four goals were more than enough to prove Arsenal’s return to form as they moved to within six points of the top four with two favourable fixtures against Crystal Palace and Newcastle to come.

West Brom on the other hand remain six points adrift of safety and showing little sign of life since Allardyce’s arrival.

  • Gundogan says fixture congestion partly to blame for West Brom draw

Gundogan says fixture congestion partly to blame for West Brom draw

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has said fixture congestion is partly to blame after his side were unable to defeat relegation-threatened West Brom at home on Tuesday.

Gundogan gave his side the lead with a 30th-minute strike, but the Baggies drew level before half-time through an own goal from Ruben Dias.

Though City dominated for long stretches, they were unable to breach West Brom’s defence again and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

It was a second straight league draw for City, who also tied local rivals Manchester United 0-0 on Saturday. With another game coming up at the weekend, Gundogan said the congested 2020-21 season is making it difficult for any European sides to put together a sustained run of form.

“It’s nearly impossible to have just one team that’s on top and dominating anything, especially with the schedule coming up,” Gundogan told BBC Sport.

“All teams in Europe are struggling to win games in a row. But we have responsibilities and we should win these kind of games, especially at home.”

Man City had 76.9 per cent of possession and could have won late if not for two massive injury-time saves from Baggies goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Gundogan felt that his side didn’t put in their best performance, but still could have come up with three points on a different day.

“We are human beings, not machines, we struggle as well. We know we could have played better but it feels like it was in the details today,” the Germany international added.

“We deserved better, we had the chances. I don’t know what to say, it’s disappointing to get one point, we must win these kind of games.

“It’s not always easy in this period of the year, so many games, they defend so deep. They do it well, they play with all they have, they fight for every ball. It’s not easy to create chances but we did – we just couldn’t score more than one goal.

“We have played great football in the past, we set the level high. The expectation is not going down just up. When you win you need to prove yourselves again. You can see all over Europe the big teams are struggling. It is not going to get easier in the next few weeks.”

  • Referee under fire for overturning Man Utd penalty against West Brom

Referee under fire for overturning Man Utd penalty against West Brom

Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has criticized referee David Coote for overturning his decision to award West Brom a penalty, as they lost 1-0 to the Red Devils on Saturday.

It was United’s first victory at home in the Premier League this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men needed a retaken penalty in the second-half to see off the Baggies.

However, with the game still 0-0, the visitors were awarded a penalty for Fernandes’ challenge on Conor Gallagher in the box.

But following advice from VAR, Coote checked his pitch-side monitor and changed his mind.

United then earned a penalty for themselves after Semi Ajayi’s handball. Fernandes’ spot-kick was saved by Sam Johnstone, but it was forced to be retaken with the Baggies goalkeeper clearly off his line.

Fernandes scored his second effort, handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side all three points at Old Trafford.

“It’s a disgraceful decision, he got it right first time,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“He’s gone there looking at it [the screen]. How do you actually go against the decision that you made initially when you’re looking at it again in slow motion?

“The more you look at it the more it’s a pen.”

Fulham Boss Hails Aina’s Wonder Goal Vs West Brom

Fulham manager Scott Parker has praised Ola Aina for his wonder goal in their 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion, in the Premier League on Monday night.

Aina scored his first goal for Fulham after doubling their lead with a rocket into the top corner.

It was Fulham’s first Premier League goal of the season which helped the London club secure a first win after seven games.

“It was a great strike. We might have to take risks,” Parker said after the game.

“We’re going to have to take risks in or around the box and Ola did that and it’s flown into the top corner. Anyone watching us with an open mind will see we have a bit of quality. We had some lovely bits in both halves.”

And commenting on his team’s overall performance, Parker said:”Overall, an all-round very good performance. The result was everything and we all realised that.

“Performance-wise we’ve been progressing in the right direction. We had a real endeavour about us and showed our quality and well worthy of the two goals. I was pleased with how we managed the game in the second half against a team we knew would come out and put us under pressure.”

Wigan thrash struggling Hull 8-0, West Brom draw with Fulham

Wigan Athletic recorded their biggest ever league victory as they beat Hull City 8-0 in the Championship on Tuesday, hitting seven past their beleaguered opponents in the first half.

The Latics broke the deadlock through Kal Naismith inside the opening minute of the contest, before Kieran Dowell and Kieffer Moore netted a brace each.

Jamal Lowe and Joe Williams also got on the scoresheet before the half-time break.

Dowell completed his hat-trick in the second half for Wigan’s eighth goal as the club celebrated their biggest league win.

They surpassed a 7-0 victory achieved against Oxford United in 2017.

The result also matched the biggest ever Championship victory —– Bournemouth’s 8-0 win over Birmingham City in 2014.

Wigan, who face a 12-point deduction after going into administration, are 12 points clear of the relegation zone with two games to play.

The defeat leaves relegation-threatened Hull a point adrift of the safety zone, having lost four matches in a row.

West Bromwich Albion’s grip on an automatic promotion spot loosened when they were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Fulham at the Hawthorns.

Grady Diangana’s effort from close range in the second half was saved brilliantly by visiting goalkeeper Marek Rodak.

Also, Fulham forward Anthony Knockaert hit the crossbar with a thunderous effort.

West Brom are currently second in the league and four points above third-placed Brentford, who have a game in hand against Preston North End on Wednesday.

Slaven Bilic’s West Brom still remain in control of their own destiny.

Maximum points from their remaining two games against Huddersfield Town and Queens Park Rangers will secure a return to the Premier League.(Reuters/NAN)
