Wike: The Emerging Champion Of The South South Region

    By Paulinus Nsirim

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, went to the ancient city of Benin, saw and faced the agents of a siege , conquered the godfather. But he was also quick to give credit to all those who joined him in the battle to accomplish the sweet victory and reclaim Edo State for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)and bring all the States in the Region under the protection of the Umbrella.

Speaking at the post-election victory press conference, in his capacity as the Chairman, PDP National Campaign Council for the Edo State Governorship polls, Governor Wike said: “I want to particularly thank my colleagues, the Governors of Delta State, Oyo State and all other persons who served in the National Campaign Council. We succeeded working as a team.

“Let me also thank the Governor of Edo State. He gave us the necessary support that has led to this victory. Also, we thank all those who worked in the campaign train in Edo State. We also appreciate the Media for the positive coverage of the election”.

Indeed, it is no longer in contention, that Governor Wike has transformed into an iconic political phenomenon, so much so that the ebullient Dino Melaye has already dubbed him “the National Governor”; a title which is sure to gain traction and national appeal in the coming weeks and months.

For many discerning political watchers and Nigerians, the Edo State Governorship election was without doubt, Governor Wike’s election. From the very onset, he midwifed the peace and reconciliation process that led to admission of Governor Obaseki into the PDP family and his eventual emergence as the party’s flag bearer in the just concluded Edo State Governorship election.

First, as a national leader who understands the dignity of the office of a duly elected Governor of every State, he chastised the Nigeria Governors Forum for failing to speak up and protect a fellow Governor, Godwin Obaseki, though belonging to the Opposition Party.

In fact, some leaders of his own party demeaned his office, embarrassed and humiliated him, as he ran from pillar to post, seeking allies and support in his battle to retain his Party’s Governorship ticket for the Edo guber polls, against a godfather who wanted him out at all cost.

Then, as a true patriot and Party man, whose overriding objective has always been to achieve and restore the PDP to its pride of place as the number one Party in the country, Governor Wike, recognized the bountiful dividends of embracing Governor Obaseki into the family.

He also became the matrix and torch bearer in the reconciliation and harmonization of all conflicting and contentious interests in the resolution of the party’s Guber ticket candidate. He brokered peace, addressed disputes and concerns satisfactorily and ensured that all interests were accommodated.

The overwhelming success of his intervention was displayed, when all the PDP Guber aspirants not only withdrew their intentions, but admirably lined up behind Governor Obaseki on the podium, as he received his flag of nomination from the Party, to contest the Governorship election, as the PDP candidate.

This singular achievement left the Opposition completely speechless, broke the first leg of their politically unstable table and eventually led to the ignoble sacking of their national chairman and erstwhile godfather of Edo politics.

Against the backdrop of this resounding political accomplishment, the appointment of Governor Wike as the PDP National Campaign Council Chairman for the Edo election, became inevitable. The magnitude of the challenge was enormous, given the extraordinary circumstances and the lingering affiliations that still defined Governor Obaseki’s membership and emergence in the PDP.

This, coupled with the fearsome prospect of ‘Federal might’ which the Opposition was poised to deploy in the election, would have cowed a lesser, lily livered man, but Governor Wike was the man for the job and embraced the challenge with open arms.

Needless to say that from the moment he was announced as the PDP National Campaign Council Chairman for the Edo State Election, a vicious campaign to discredit him, by those who knew the overwhelming influence and authority his involvement in such a critical position would have on the overall election and especially on the good people of Edo state, commenced with the aid of some gullible media outlets, who would sooner learn to their chagrin, that the Rivers State Governor was not a man to trifle with.

Governor Wike also systematically embarked on a robust, well structured media charm offensive himself, highlighted by a series of selected prime time television interviews, where he quite adeptly deployed the platform to succinctly and unequivocally set the tone and mindset that would eventually shape and determine the outcome of the Edo Guber elections.

As the chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council, his appearances at the Party’s state-wide rallies were usually electrifying as he galvanized the teeming crowd with his unique, charismatic, dynamic and dexterous style.

His message resonated powerfully with the people’s expectations and desires. His admonitions telling them what to do on election day were on point. He presented himself as an example and as a leader who will lead from the front. His presence inspired hope, enthusiasm, optimism, courage and conviction in the belief that the will of the people would always triumph over every obstacle and intimidation.

Governor Wike arrived Benin, just like the other leaders of the Opposition Campaign Council, but with his own touchdown the whole atmosphere became abuzz with excitement and a collective sense of identity, existential purpose and historical essence for the Edo people.

Members of the opposition, including those who had earlier arrived Edo for the same assignment as he, were even heard complaining loudly and bitterly that they don’t know what he is doing in the state. They were in panic.

A siege with over 300 armed policemen, complemented with armoured tank and other arsenal was hurriedly placed on his hotel accommodation premises to prevent him from stepping out and when the Inspector General of Police called and told him to leave Edo State that his presence was likely to cause unrest amongst the people, Governor Wike’s response was classic, typical and well reported.

He then followed up his nonplussed stance with the Police IG by holding a World Press Conference at the Hi-Tech PDP Situation Room where he alerted the nation and the International Community of what was going on.

He completely wrong footed the Opposition, as usual and he was always one step ahead. But the most impressive aspect of the strategy was that he appeared with both Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and Chairman of the South South Governor’s Forum, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who is also chairing the Southwest PDP Campaign Council, as well as other Party leaders.

It was not a one man show but a collective effort of the Party, embodied by a man and leader, who has grown to become the unifier and champion of the South South Region’s political identity.

By virtue of the progressive thinking and pragmatic sacrifices of Governor Wike, the South South Region Governors can now speak loudly and without fear or intimidation, with one united voice.

The objective of bringing all the South South States under one political leadership umbrella has been achieved with this overwhelming success in Edo State.

Over the years, Governor Wike has proved his enduring mettle, as a political tactician beyond doubt. In the PDP, as well as on the political landscape, he has emerged as the referential face of the Party Brand, not only by virtue of his widely reported sterling developmental achievements and legacy infrastructural and other projects, but also for his robust advocacy, articulation, constructive critical observations and uncensored maturity and honesty.

He enjoys a very cordial relationship with his brother governors which has attracted tremendous goodwill to him especially in the national political space, where he has achieved an impressive pedigree and comprehensive acceptance across board.

There is a saying that all politics is local and Governor Wike is a leading disciple of the localization of politics, which not only celebrates the adage that charity begins at home but also promotes the agenda of Rivers first, which goes a long way to explain why he is passionate about the protection of Rivers lives, property and indeed everything Rivers.

No wonder he was welcomed back home in Rivers State, after his exertions in Edo state, by a large, jubilant crowd of Rivers sons and daughters, who had kept vigil and prayed for him, when news filtered in that the police had laid a seige on his hotel.

Rivers people and indeed many who followed the Edo state Governorship elections, heaved a huge sigh of relief to see their darling Governor Wike back home, hale and hearty, to continue his good works in the state.

At a time, when Nigeria is in dire need of patriotic and responsible Citizens and leaders, as our political life evolves, Governor Wike stands tall as one who epitomises the true characteristics of what it takes to be a great leader for his people.

Edo 2020: Rivers Senate caucus warns against any harm to Wike

*As House PDP caucus protest police siege on govs

The Rivers State Senate caucus has warmed the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu that no harm should come to the Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, who is on an official assignment to Edo State.

This warning was contained in a statement jointly signed by Senator George Sekibo and Rep. Kingsley Chinda, both leaders of the Rivers State National Assembly caucus.

The caucus condemned the siege allegedly laid by over 300 policemen on the hotel Gov. Wike and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors lodged in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

In the statement, the caucus said “the attention of the Rivers State caucus in the National Assembly has been drawn to the very unfortunate, undemocratic and unjustifiable siege by over 300 gun wielding policemen on the Hotel where Nyesom Wike is staying in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

“We are troubled that this shameful action is led by no less a person than D.I.G. Leye Oyebanji, who has and is still issuing threats to the governor to leave Edo State even when the Governors of Kano and Imo States are freely moving around Benin City without molestation, threats, harassment, intimidation and confinement.

“We are aware that the governor is the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Campaign Council just as Gov. Ganduje represents the same to the APC.

“Furthermore, the Rivers State governor has committed no offense and is also protected by immunity under our laws.

“We are afraid that this action will further widen the fractured parts and points of Nigeria, especially at this time when the report of the obvious slide to the status of a failed state.

“Let us warn that should anything untoward befall our governor, the consequences could be dire as we call on Mr. President to reign in all actors in this shameful, dishourable and undemocratic show of shame and ensure a free, fair, credible and peaceful election.

“We call on the international community to note the conspirators in this naked rape on democracy and democratic institutions in Nigeria.”

  • Edo Guber: Wike — Vote for Obaseki, Shaibu to end godfatherism

More witnesses testify in Rivers Gov election tribunal

The Chairman of the National Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, Chief Nyesom Wike, has urged the electorate to vote for Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy/running mate, Philip Shaibu, to end godfatherism in the state.

Wike, the Governor of Rivers State, made the admonition yesterday at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, while ending PDP’s campaigns with a mega rally.

Grand finale of the rally was also attended by Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), as well as the National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus; and a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; among other dignitaries.

Wike claimed that Obaseki had done his best in going round the 192 wards of Edo State to solicit the votes of residents, stressing that the large number of persons that attended the rally was an attestation that the Edo governor had done what he needed to do.

With the mammoth crowd at the rally, the Rivers governor claimed that Obaseki had already won the election, asking the electorate to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce the election result in favour of Governor Obaseki.

Tambuwal asked Edo residents to protect their votes, saying they should not be intimidated or allowed themselves to be enticed by money to sell their votes.

Okowa hailed Obaseki for moving round the 92 wards to campaign, hoping that he would emerge victorious on Saturday.

Obi said voting for the Edo governor would guarantee the people of the state and the unborn generations a brighter future.

Secondus urged lovers of democracy worldwide to ensure that Edo governorship election was free, fair and credible.

Obaseki noted that his electioneering in the 192 wards opened his eyes to some of the challenges in the rural areas, which he promised to address in his second term.

He appreciated the support of members and leaders of the PDP.

  • NDDC Is A ‘Cash Cow’ For Politicians – Wike

NDDC Is A ‘Cash Cow’ For Politicians – Wike

The recent revelations on the activities of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) may have come as a surprise to many Nigerians, but it is not a shocking development for Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Governor Wike believes the agency has since deviated from its original mandate and has become a source of wealth for some corrupt politicians.

“I have said before and it is very clear; my concern is everybody knows that NDDC was set up for the development of the region,” he told Channels Television on Tuesday during an interview on Sunrise Daily in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

He added, “Unfortunately, they have turned it to a different thing; NDDC is a cash cow for politicians. In my own election, NDDC brought N10 billion cash to fight against me.”

The governor’s reaction is the latest among several others following the probe of the agency by lawmakers in the National Assembly in Abuja.

The lawmakers had launched a probe into the fraud running into billions of naira said to have been perpetrated by the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the NDDC between February and May 2020.

This led to the discovery of more scam in the agency which sparked a series of drama and blame games between government officials and lawmakers.

During one of the investigative hearings organised by the National Assembly, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, alleged that about 60 per cent of the NDDC projects were awarded to lawmakers – a claim that sparked more reactions from some members of the Senate and House of Representatives.

    They Have Not Invited Us
Amid various responses to the minister’s claim, Governor Wike accused the agency of embarking on projects in Rivers without the consent of the state government.

He also reacted to the probe of the NDDC by the lawmakers, saying it was one-sided as the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the agency led by Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei ought to be investigated as well.

“When they are talking about probing IMC, I said what are you doing only with IMC, what about the other committees? Professor Kemebradikumo and the rest of them. They (the lawmakers) have not invited us and why I don’t want to go is that what am I doing with the IMC?” the governor asked.

He stated, “I am one governor who challenged the NDDC; we went to the Federal High Court, the Federal High Court returned the matter to the State High Court. NDDC went to appeal and we won them and at the State High Court, we have won them.

“You cannot go to a state and begin to carry out projects without the permission of the state government, you don’t know what their plans are. You can’t come into my state to disturb my development plan, you must let me know.”

Governor Wike believes that in order to reverse the fortune of the agency, technocrats and not politicians should be placed in charge of the commission to enable it function effectively.

Explaining the role of governors in the South-South, he said, “Under the NDDC Act, there should be a governing board made up of the governors.

“Since 2015 we have been asking for that board, but it was only last year that the President was able to … constitute a governing board. But that is just theory.”

BREAKING: Gov Wike sacks perm sec for flouting COVID-19 guidelines

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has sacked the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Sunny Okere, for allegedly flouting guidelines put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paulinus Nsirim.

According to the statement, Okere’s dismissal was with immediate effect.

The former permanent secretary was dismissed for reportedly participating in a burial ceremony with more than 50 persons in attendance in contravention to the state government’s protocol on funerals amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The governor was quoted as saying, “In the face of increasing infections and systemic risk to public health and safety, most residents have continued to disregard the mitigating protocols with reckless abandon.

“Public and private transporters, business owners and churches are refusing to adhere to the relevant protocols.

“Burial ceremonies are also reportedly being conducted in clear breach of the 50 persons maximum attendance limit such that a serving Permanent Secretary had the temerity to chase away officials of the State Ministry of Health who went to enforce the established guidelines on public burials at Oyigbo.

“Consequently, the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Mr Sunny Okere has been relieved of his appointment with immediate effect for flouting and obstructing the enforcement of the guidelines on public burials. This should serve as a lesson to all other public officers who may wish to be irresponsible.”

Wike withdraws from reconciliation efforts as Edo PDP crisis escalates

The Governor of River state, Bar. Nyesom Wike has withdrawn his efforts at reconciling warring factions in Edo state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he cannot “work with sycophants in Edo PDP peace panel.”

Wike’s withdrawal is a clear sign that the PDP is far from resolving the crisis triggered by the defection of Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki to the party to contest the September governorship election following his disqualification by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike accused some members of the National Working Committee of the PDP of being sycophants and tax collectors who would never tell the truth.

The River state governor stated his reasons for backing out of the peace committee through a statement signed by his Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim on Tuesday.

He said the National Working Committee, instead of carrying everybody along in Edo State, resorted to using the media to blackmail him.

“I told them that in Edo State, we must handle the issue carefully and carry everybody along. They must respect human beings and not behave like tax collectors.

“They said because an order was obtained from a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, then I am responsible.

“I have had sleepless nights to resolve the issue in Edo State. The governors of Edo, Adamawa, and Delta states know what I have done to resolve the issues in Edo State. As a result of this senseless accusation, I have pulled out of Edo State settlement. My integrity matters.

“Nobody will rubbish me by raising false accusations against me. I will fight back,” Wike said, adding that he was no longer going to participate in any reconciliation.

“I am brought up not to accept injustice, and that is why I keep speaking out on national issues. Nobody in the PDP can intimidate Rivers State,” he said.
