Wike said this on Monday at the flag-off exercise of the construction of a 5km dual carriageway in Kuje Area Council of the FCT, adding that the road project also rekindles the president’s assurance that he means well for the nation’s capital.

Wike said, “I would like to mention that Mr. President is fully supporting us and his mandate is very clear to the Hon. Minister of State and my humble self. When you people say that the Minister of State and my humble self are working, it’s because we have a President who gives us anything we want.”

“He has given us the support, and so we have no excuses to give but to let the people know that Mr. President is behind everything we are doing. Every request we have made, Mr. President has always given to us. So, for us, we don’t have any excuse not to do what we are supposed to do.”

He said, “If you take our money, you must do our road. There is no grammar there. I cannot be Minister and you collect our money and say you won’t do the job. For me and the Hon. Minister of State, we don’t have time for the dry season, we don’t have time for the rainy season. If you collect our money under rainy season, you must also work under the rainy season.

Furthermore, the Minister reassured that all abandoned projects in the FCT Area Councils that were awarded by the FCT Administration would have to be completed, to ensure that they impact positively on the people and preserve the resources of government.

Wike’s fight against insecurity in FCT will yeild positive results, Mahmoud assures residents

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, has assured FCT residents that the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike’s efforts to combat insecurity in the territory will soon yield positive results.

The Minister gave this assurance when she went on a sympathy visit to the family of Al-Kadriyar Mansoor, whose  daughters were recently released after several days in the kidnappers den.

Mahmoud, stressed that since the reported cases of kidnapping in recent times, the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has been on his feet doing all that is necessary to improve on the security situation in the city centre including the satellite towns.

She said, “I am sure the people of FCT will also bear witness of our collective efforts in tackling insecurity. They have seen how we have been up and doing since this incident of kidnapping and other security matters.”

“His Excellency, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has been on his feet. We have been doing all that is necessary to improve on our security situation in FCT.”

“All the support to be given to the security agencies has been put in place and also some materials and equipment they need to carry out their works are also in the process.”

“So also the issue of access road, we think will also improve the security situation in FCT and the satellite towns.”

“I am sure you too have seen that the issue of kidnapping is going down, but we want it at a zero level.”

She, however, expressed satisfaction over the victims state of health, noting that they are in a stable condition.

The minister said,”we are here today in the house of Mr. Alkadriyar Mansoor, because of the tragedy that happened to the family.”

“Precisely the issue of kidnapping of his five female children but released by the support of the government and family members.”

“So we have come to support the family and to tell them that the FCT Administration is with them.”

“By and large, we are here to see how they are coping psychologically, mentally and also spiritually. And we thank Almighty Allah for their lives and health because they are in a stable condition.”

In his response, the father of the children who was also a victim, Mr. Alkadriyar Mansoor, thanked the minister for her show of love, and called on the Administration to extend the same to other victims.

He also called on the Administration to equip the security agencies more, adding that the current equipment used by security agencies cannot measure up with the equipment used by the bandits.

He said, ” I am highly elated that the FCT Administration deemed it necessary to pay my family visit of which there are several other families who have been victims of kidnappers.”

“And I wish they would extend the gesture they have extended to me to other families who have been kidnapped like this as well.”

“Nevertheless, I want the government to improve on the security in the local areas within FCT. Bwari most especially is so porous. Bwari is bordering about three or four states. And of which if action is not taken it might escalate to other things I don’t expect.”

“And the Nigerian Police Force needs to be empowered more. Most especially those in the rural areas and not in the city centers.”

“What they are having in their hands, the equipment they have cannot really measure up with what the criminals are using nowadays.”

“So buying them vehicles is not the only thing. Buy them gadgets that they will use to work.”

The minister was accompanied by the Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, Hon. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Director FCT Reforms Coordination and Service Improvement, Dr. Jumai Ahmadu and the Deputy Director in charge of Child Development, Mr. Idris Yahaya.

The highpoint of the visit was the presentation of items and undisclosed amount of cash to family.

Wike’s intervention suspends FCT primary teachers strike over peculiar allowance

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The timely intervention by the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has suspended the indefinite strike action embarked by the FCT Wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) primary school teachers over their demand for peculiar allowance.

The union State Secretary, Mrs Margaret Jethro, made this known in an interview on Monday in Abuja.

The union, however, said that the 40 per cent Peculiar Allowance, amounting to over N8 billion was still hanging.

According toJethro, the strike which was suspended with effect from Monday, followed the intervention of Wike to settle part of the minimum wage arrears owed the teachers.

She explained that Wike promised to settle 40 per cent of the over N7 billion minimum wage arrears, while the area councils would settle the remaining 60 per cent, adding
that the payment would begin from January and complete by March.

“We have suspended strike with effect from today and teachers are already in class.”

“Wike had promised that the deduction of the 40 per cent minimum wage arrears will begin this January and the area councils too will bring their own deductions for the three months.”

“So, based on that, we are giving him the benefits of the doubt,” she said.

Speaking on the N8 billion 12-month Peculiar Allowance debt, Jethro stated that the area councils had argued that primary school teachers were not entitled to it. Mb

She noted that the minister has promised towrite to the National Income and Wages Commission for clarification.

“The area council chairmen insisted that primary school teachers are not entitled to it, but the circular that came from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission says all staff on consolidated salary, and primary school teachers are on consolidated salary.”

“So, the minister said he is going to make clarification himself and do the needful.’

“We decided to take what he has given to us and give him time to make the clarification,” she said.

The Union Secretary however said that if nothing was done, the Union will take the next line of action.”

The strike was a continuation of an earlier one suspended in 2023 over non-payment of 40 per cent Peculiar Allowance and 25 months minimum wage arrears, among other issues

The NUT suspended the strike on Oct. 2, 2023, to allow for the resolution of the issues within six weeks which was not achieved.

Daybreak reports that the teachers had on Jan. 15 began an indefinite strike.

Kidnapping: Wike orders Council Chairman to set up, profile vigilance groups

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has ordered the six Area Council Chairmen to set up vigilance groups and also profile members of the groups.

Wike gave the order during a strategic security meeting with members of the FCT Council of Chiefs and the council chairmen.

Wike promised that the Administration would continue to work with the traditional rulers in ensuring foolproof security for the nation’s capital.

He said, “We have asked all the Area Councils to set up vigilance teams and we believe that those vigilance teams won’t be the ones perpetrating the crimes.”

“Therefore, they must be profiled so that they are known. Who are they? Are they from our communities? So that we won’t say we want to solve a problem and then cause another one. They (chairmen) will have to do that with you (traditional rulers).”

“We have told the police and other security agencies to itemise all their needs and we are going to meet them so that our people can sleep comfortably with their eyes closed.”

The minister stated that the meeting with traditional rulers and the council chairmen is to enable c
them work in synergy and on the same page.
“If there are things you think we should do too, we are willing to partner with you so that the challenges we are facing now will be a thing of the past. ”

“You must work hard because insecurity is not written on anybody’s face. Anyone can be a victim and that is why we must do everything possible to ensure that our subjects are not victims of these criminals.”

“We are not folding our hands we are not sleeping. We are working 24 hours round the clock.”

“Again, you would have heard that we are demolishing shanties. You know criminals won’t want to live in known houses. They commit crimes and run to shanties that can’t be easily traced. So, we will continue to demolish shanties. You need to support us. You don’t allow people to bring propaganda. There is nothing like that.”

Meanwhile,Wike reiterated his commitment to roll out buses in order to reduce the incidences of ‘one chance’ or taxi robberies in the territory.

“Very soon we are going to roll out our buses which will be painted in Abuja colours and we won’t allow taxis that are not painted in our colours to operate so that this issue of one chance can be eliminated”, he stated.

He disclosed that before President Bola Tinubu departed for France on Wednesday, he had asked him to inform the traditional rulers that government was doing all within its powers to secure the nation.

“We sincerely thank all of you for your concerns and efforts. Before Mr President departed this afternoon he said I should inform you that the government is doing all within its powers to curb insecurity.”

Already, the government has shown strength and courage in fighting insecurity across the country.

“This is the FCT where many Nigerians want to come to and stay and so we are more concerned because when the capital is threatened, the whole country is threatened. So, we are very serious with security. We are not sleeping. We are working 24 hours.”

“We have met with the councils and we have told them the little we need which is information to be able to help security agencies that are directly involved in the fight against criminalities. Nobody would say there is anywhere in this world no matter how developed that has no form of insecurity or the other. ”

The only difference is that it is either nipped in the bud or you are sure that if it happens the criminals are caught. But that is not an excuse for us. We are ready to ensure it doesn’t happen or when it happens, the perpetrators are arrested and made to face the wrath of the law, he emphasized.

“The president has given us series of approvals to make sure that security agencies are fully equipped to fight this crime and we cannot do this alone without your support. You have a role to play in securing your domains. You know those around your domain. If there are unfamiliar faces, you can let the council chairmen know, so as to report to my office so that actions can be taken”, he added.

The Ona of Abaji and Chairman, FCT Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa who said the minister was not new to governance or to Abuja, expressed optimism in his ability to turn around the fortunes of the territory.

“You are not new in Abuja and we trust you that you are going to change the story of Abuja by God’s grace.”

“Continue with what you are doing and we are backing you”, the Ona assured.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike has warned the public against politicisation of insecurity in FCT.

The minister commended security agencies for the efforts so far, adding that the media chats present an opportunity to update Nigerians as regard the issues of security in FCT.

He stressed that the security agencies should be commended for the successes being recorded so far, rather than the political propaganda that security in FCT has collapsed to cause panic.
    End

“After the first kidnapping incident in Bwari, President Tinubu summoned the service chiefs and my humble self and within a few days you have seen what they have achieved.

“But nobody is talking about that. Nobody has come to commend them. All you here security has collapsed,” he complained.

He called on residents to give the government the needed support and desists from generalizing security issues as if it was a daily occurrence.

According to him, nobody is happy that kidnapping is rearing its ugly head in FCT.

“Nigerians forget easily and that is why we have always said let’s not play politics with the issue of security.

“Remember, some time ago, in the last administration, we were told that bandits came to Kuje prison and wreaked havoc. Nobody said there was no Minister of FCT. There was a minister.

“Nobody talks about FCT being the capital. Remember, there was an administration where terrorists came and burnt the United Nations building here. It was in FCT.

“Remember, there was an attack to burn the police headquarters. There was a minister.

“All over the world, we have heard where armed men went to school in cities and shot at will, killing 15 to 16 people in the United States in Britain as developed as they are.

“That does not mean that the security in those cities has collapsed.”

The minister urged residents to learn to appreciate government efforts and support the security agencies with intelligence information to assist in addressing the challenge.
