Wike Flags-off 9km Paikon Kore-lbwa road construction in Gwagwalada Area Council

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, on Thursday flagged off the emergency construction and rehabilitation of the 9 kilometer Paikon Kore – Ibwa Road, in Gwagwalada Area Council.

Wike said that the Paikon Kore- Ibwa road project is part of 30-kilometre roads that would be constructed across the six area councils of the FCT to promote rural development in the territory.

The minister stated that the road construction project was designed to make rural dwellers comfortable and open rural communities for development, as he assured the residents that President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda was not mere talk but action.

He disclosed that two additional roads would be constructed in each of the area councils before the end of the year, to make it three rural roads per area council.

The minister blamed the spate of rural urban migration on the lack of roads and other basic amenities needed to make life comfortable.

He noted that the project will address insecurity, improve access to school, enable the people to evacuate their farm produce to the market and boost economic activities.

Wike also assured the contractor that funding would not be a problem, stressing that he would accept nothing short of expected quality.

“Funding will not be a problem, but do it well; the people are entitled to quality roads.”

“I will not tell you when I will come here for inspection. I will not also depend on a report from the director overseeing the project.”

“What I will depend on is what I see with my own eyes,” Wike emphasized.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, pointed out that lack of access roads in communities had stunted development in rural communities.

According to Mahmoud the construction of the rural roads across the six area councils would not only open the rural communities for trade and commerce, but also improve access to the market, health care, and education.

“The project is not just about laying down asphalt; it is about connecting communities, improving access, and fostering economic development in our rural areas.”

“For too long, the lack of proper road infrastructure has hindered the progress of our rural communities.”

“Farmers have to struggle to transport their produce to markets; students have faced difficulties reaching schools; and medical emergencies have been compounded by the challenges of accessing timely healthcare,” Mahmoud said.

Furthermore, Oversite Director, Satellite Towns Development Department, FCTA, Dr Olusegun Olusa, said that the 9 kilometer road is one of the projects selected by FCDA due to infrastructural deficit.

Olusa gave the assurance that the project, awarded to Setraco Nigeria Ltd, would be delivered before May 29 to mark President Tinubu’s one year in office.

Earlier, the Chairman, Gwagwalada Area Council, Mr. Abubakar Giri, commended the minister for bringing the project to Gwagwalada, which he said is the first rural project to be executed by the FCT minister in the area.

Giri said the road, when completed, would improve security in rural communities due to improved access to communities and boost the economy of the people.

He said that the 90 percent of the people in the area, who are farmers, will benefit immensely from the road projects as they will be evacuating their agricultural produce to the market.

Also, a chief, the Aguma of Gwagwalada, Mr Mohammad Magaji, thanked the minister for taking the bold step to develop rural communities in the FCT.

Magaji expressed joy that the project would facilitate development in rural communities, which eluded local areas for ages.

He announced that the community has bestowed the traditional title of Sarkin Yakin (warlord) Paikon Kore on the minister and awaiting his approval for coronation.

The Managing Director, Setraco Nigeria Ltd, Mr Ziad Mouannes, promised to deliver the project according to specification.

Mouannes called for the support of the FCT Administration, particularly funding and security, to ensure timely completion of the project.

“Nigeria has a strong tie with the Republic of Ireland, and so we would like to leverage on that, especially in the area of Agriculture, which Ireland is known for.”

“One of the important focuses of Mr. President is to harness the potential in ICT, in the interest of the youths. We Will seize the opportunity to visit Dublin to see some ICT hubs, so we can duplicate the same in the FCT.”

Judiciary plays a vital role in the survival of Nigeria’s Democracy- Wike

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has emphasized that the judiciary plays a vital role in the nation’s Democracy.

Wike made this known when he received a delegation of Federal High Court Judges, led by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice John Terhemba Tsoho who paid a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja on Thursday, November 2, 2023.

The Minister noted that the judiciary, as an independent arm of government, plays a significant role for the survival of democracy and should not be considered any less among the three arms of government.

He therefore reiterated FCT Administration’s commitment to provide the necessary support to enhance the operations of the judiciary in the territory, adding that provision has been made in the 2023 supplementary budget of the FCT for the construction of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal.

The minister said, “Just yesterday, I went to the National Assembly to defend the supplementary budget and there we included the building of the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal.”

Speaking on the request for land allocation to Federal High Court Judges, the Minister assured that land would be allocated to them by the FCT Administration, but noted that it would be done in phases.

He also pledged the provision of infrastructure in areas where allocations had been made by his predecessors to encourage development.

“If there are other problems that you think you have that the administration can help, do not hesitate to let us solve that problem”, he assured.

Earlier, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice Tsoho commended Barrister Wike for his selfless service to the People of Rivers State and for his support to the judiciary as his primary constituency.

Hon. He therefore appealed to the FCT Minister to allocate land in the FCT to serving Federal High Court Judges, as a form of recognition for their services nationwide, which he said makes them federal citizens.

In attendance were Hon. Justices G, K Olotu, B.F.N Nyako, I.E Ekwo, D.U. Okorowo among senior officials of the FCTA.

Wike clarifies insinuations about meeting with Israeli envoy

    By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike has clarified in strong terms insinuations about his October 3rd meeting with the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, that he expressed his support for Israel against Palestine.

Wike who dismissed such insinuations as baseless and untrue said, “I can’t determine relationship between countries as FCT Minister.”

The minister who recently met with the leadership of the Abuja National Mosque Management Board, re- echoed that he has no constitutional powers to determine Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with other countries, as such powers lies absolutely with the President and Commander-in-Chief.

Wike said, “I have heard from various social media platforms that we had a meeting that we are doing this and that with Israel. I am here acting on delegation of powers on behalf of Mr. President.”

“I cannot determine a relationship between a country and another country. So, it is difficult for anybody to say I am doing this, I am doing that.”

“Any foreign body that wants to have anything to do with Nigeria, it is the Minister of Foreign Affairs who will write to me and state that these people want to see me; it is simple. ”

And when they come, it is in my position to say look, we want to partner with you. Take for instance, you are going into agriculture and we want to partner, then we tell you where exactly, he explained.

The minister further explained that his meeting with the Israeli Ambassador was purely for agricultural partnership in the interest of farmers in the FCT.

According to the minister, “In Abuja, most of them have cultural farms and we say look, it is our own desire to help anybody who wants to invest in Abuja particularly in agriculture in order to employ our people and in order to get more revenue. It has nothing to do with another country. It doesn’t work that way.”

“When our people begin to now think different angles and people may not understand that it is not correct. So I will like to use this opportunity to say look we have to talk to our people. In fact we must live harmoniously. We must live together to make sure that development is promoted, the minister stated.

The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, had on Tuesday October 3 visited the FCT minister, days before the Hamas’ attack on Israel and the consequent and continued retaliation by the Jewish nation.

Inspite of the gap between the visit and the eruption of conflict between the group and Israel, some elements had accused Wike of offering Nigeria’s support to Israel.

Freeman had during the visit expressed his country’s willingness to work with Nigeria to generate employment opportunities for the unemployed population, transform Abuja into a technology hub, and engage in agricultural partnerships.

In response, Wike conveyed Nigeria’s commitment to partnering with Israel in the field of Information Technology with a plan to establish a technology village in Abuja.

He also highlighted the favourable climate in Abuja, suggesting a collaborative effort to create a large technology-driven farm that could employ many youths.

Owing to this, Wike sought Israel’s assistance in enhancing Nigeria’s technological security measures to strengthen national security.
