Tension Mounts as Bandits Strike, Killing Soldiers on Peacekeeping Duty in Nasarawa

Katapka community in the Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State is gripped by fear following reports of the alleged killing of three Nigerian Army personnel and two vigilantes by bandits who launched an attack on Tuesday.

The unrest began when unidentified gunmen attacked Katapka and Okudu communities on February 1, 2024, resulting in the loss of three lives and significant property damage. In response, the Nigerian Army deployed personnel to the area to restore order.

However, while the military worked to maintain peace, the bandits ambushed them on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the tragic deaths of three soldiers and two vigilantes.

Abdullahi Aliyu-Tashas, the Chairman of Toto LGA, lamented the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He explained that the soldiers were targeted while on patrol to restore calm after recent attacks in the area.

The state government has taken action, deploying additional security forces to prevent further chaos and address the situation.

Meanwhile, the Bassa Cultural Development Union, representing an ethnic group in the region, urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to swiftly identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind the attacks. They expressed condolences to the affected families and called for peace to be restored in the Toto Local Government Area.
