President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved new leadership appointments for two federal universities of education in Zaria, Kaduna State, and Kano State.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President named Prof. Yahaya Bunkure as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria. Bunkure, a distinguished scholar in science education, is currently serving as the Vice Chancellor of Saadatu Rimi University of Education, Kano.
At the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, Tinubu appointed Prof. Abdullahi Kodage as Vice Chancellor and Engr. Abdurrazaq Nakore as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council.
Nakore, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, previously served as Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Rural Electricity Board. His appointment as Pro-Chancellor will span four years, while the Vice Chancellors are expected to serve five-year terms in line with the institutions’ governing laws.
Both the Federal University of Education, Zaria, and the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, are among four former Colleges of Education upgraded to full-fledged universities between 2022 and 2023, a move aimed at strengthening teacher education and advancing Nigeria’s educational standards.
The Presidency emphasized that the new appointments reflect Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning higher education and ensuring strong leadership in specialized universities tasked with training the next generation of teachers.
